Me, you and monarch!

Great read!! Tough start but you're hanging in there. Bismarck seems to be everyone's worst enemy so they are less likely to attack you. Just use your financial and industrious trait to improve your economy and build wonders, but do maintain a decent defensive military force at all times. Shaka could turn into a monster here. If he vassalizes Bismarck, he will look at you or Napoleon next so be careful.

Not much more room for expansion without war. Build infastructure and military, pick a target. Being industrious metal casting + cheap forges might be a priority.

Having 0.2 power of Shaka is not good. Get some more military for defense.

Also, improve your capital more (and let it GROW, don't whip unless you really need to) and cottage those grasslands. If you don't have enough workers you should make more. I recommend you use your second-best production city (Capital should be first) to make those workers while the capital focuses on research and your newer cities create terraces. Do not make workers right off the bat from newly founded size-1 cities. They take a long time to create and a terrace would be better (chopped preferably by a worker produced from your second-best production city).

Also, just wondering, why do you have 3 Cuzcos?

I actually don't really know what that 0.2 means. I haven't used those mods for a long time. But, like you and everyone else, military has to be a priority now. I think I have an average of one archer and 1 quechas per city. Not good. I would love to make those grasslands into farm in my capital, yet I need civil service for the irrigation to spread. So, since my capital is currently the only optional production city i might have to make that tech a high priority. And I do not whip in my capital. Especially not in this one with so little food resources.

And the name generator is . .. .. .. .ed up for me. It switches between three names and that makes it apparently happy.

So for my upcoming update (in a few hours or so) this will be my plan:
- Stop making worker in 1 pop cities and go for terrace.
- Get calender (especially for the extra food in the capital.
- Then get Civil Service, change civic and get a lot of food and mines in the capital. Make it my super production place instead of the newly found city.
- Prepare for war, at the end of last round I just got iron connected up and with math soon finished I will have catapults. Increase the power rating vs Shaka and take out Bismarck.
- To help me in the war, get metal casting (before or after Civil service) and get forges. The +1 happiness will also be welcome with the mines.
- I do still have some room south to expand. Either I let it be and take it from the dwarf later (who has alot of techs). Or sacrifice some commerce for a few more cities.

-- Long term goal: Take out Shaka. When my military reach a decent level I might close boarder with him to starve his trade (after I got Bismarck). Then with a few pillage group take out his most precious resources.

So, how does this sound?

Ummm... let's see now. You share a border with Shaka, you have 20% of his power rating, and you denied him Code of Laws??? Good luck with that. You do know that he will attack you at pleased, don't you? :crazyeye:

Maybe I forgot to write it, but he is still at war with Bismarck. Even if he now is this backstabber maniac as you make out of him, I do doubt he will attack me now. I hope. :)

Ps. I know that some AI attack at please, who exacly, I don't know. But it's a gamble. He is already at war, which has been going on from some time and they have been fighting over a city a couple of time. Shaka took one of Bismarck city, then Bismarck took it back. Considering that Bismarck just has three cities and a semi-developed capital. This gave me some (false) confidence about his situation. We will see soon as I will start next round soon. :)

You can rename cities after they are created. I think it is up by the city name on the city page, but check the manual as I haven't had a need to do it.

Yeah, Shaka will get you, if you wanted to ignore him you should've gifted him code of laws. He may be distracted right now but if that war ever ends be sure to watch your back.

0.2 means you have 20 percent of Shaka's power. Check "F9" and then "Power" to see where you stand in a clearer picture.

This is going to be a huge update and ImageShack will most likely hate me. Oh, this was suppose to happen yesterday but I was to tired for it. But here it is. Enjoy.

First tech order - finish calender (To be able to get those banans and it's +2 food for the capital to support two more hills. - Civil service (to farm and utilize my capital)
- metal casting (for forge) - construction (for catas). There where a lot more, but I take them as we go on.

My plan for all my cities:

Capital: Finish library and when connected to marble, build GL (and later walls and castle for extra power rating)
Second city: Build walls and castle then pump military, but build forge when it's ready
Third city: Continue supporting the rest, but get a wall and castle here
Fourth city: Build barrack, forge, wall and castle and then military unit
Fifth: Build a barrack, forge, wall and a forge, then pump military units
Sixth: Same as fifth

Traded fish for wheat to the dwarf. Not that I need it but to improve our relationship. I want him to fight bismarck if I have to war against Shaka. Next turn I traded Aesthetics and 15 gold to the dwarf for monarchy. With the lack of luxary resources and pyramids I will need hereditary rule later. But I will make the switch when I get civil service. Also in a try to please Shaka, I gave him poly, don't think it will count for much but perhaps.

After calender was researched I went to get masonry to build quarry and get marble for my GL, which I started at my capital.
quarryno7.jpg

After that I went Civil Service (random event saved me one turn! Yay) for beuracracy and irrigation. Also, a barbarian axemen shows up at my sixth city, killing one of my UU and. Made my heart pump, but then I remember: promotion! Ha, shock, suck on that one damn barbarian! Next turn when he attacked he died!

My worst fear happen. Bismarck became a vassal of Shaka. Let's hope for some luck here. Or a lot...
vassalxd3.jpg

Ahh, marble, it's so...marveoulus
marblema5.jpg

A few turns pass by, a few axemen is starting to pop up, increased my power rating up to 0.3! I'm such a terrifying military monster! Really, I am...After a few axemen is build within each town, I get a wall there to help the power rating.

Another few turns, no war yet, puh, and Civil Service is done. I switch civics and at the same turn GL is also done. There shall be power in my capital!
civicsgh1.jpg

I went for Metal Casting after this, to get me thy forges! Build order is going to be a few axemen and then a wall. Then let's see if we can't snatch another wonder. Also, it seems as Shaka got his own gem now, since he doesn't want it anymore and I loose wine. Luckily, I have got hereditary rule now so my happiness won't become a problem. Also, The dwarf got statue of zeus. Warring with him will be a pain in the ass.

Most powerful...
mostpowerfulof1.jpg

Metal Casting is done, getting machinery for macemen. To prove that I am worthy!
Start building forges.
forgesgl4.jpg

Things are getting real. Traded Aesthetics for mono and 170 gold from Shaka! But I am still behind when it comes to tech...
tech1rg5.jpg

Also, I decided to switch civic to organized religion, since I am partly building quite alot. And I want to start taking wonders with my capital and start spreading Buddhism even more.
civic2gc4.jpg

Then, something wonderful happend. Something truly wonderful. Napoleon declared war against Shaka! Things are going my way! (unless he becomes a vassal) I have got up to 0.4 power rating of Shaka and 0.5 of the dwarfs, meaning they are quite equal. Perhaps I will have a chance to backstab someone of them. :)
dwarfsdowonshakags3.jpg

The next turn, the dwarfs offers 170 g for literature. It's a done deal!
trade1ob6.jpg

The dwarf looses his first city...And I get machinery and macemen, now for construction for War elephants and catapults.

A few turn later, a GS crawls out. Yay, creating an academy in my capital to enchant my breakers a little. To be exact, from 113 to 128.
gsht0.jpg

Library AND courthouse gets destroyed in my commerce town. Thanks a lot for that one!

My capital with beuracracy and fixed improvements. It is looking quite decent.
capitalpe6.jpg

With my power ratio up to 0.5 to Shaka and 0.6 with the dwarf, I start to get more buildings and worker. Trying to spread my religion around to earn some extra cash. Construction gets done within these turns also, to improve my gold a bit more I get currency, market would be nice in my commerce town.

Here it comes, Shaka ask me to DoW on the Dwarf
wantsmetodowfp5.jpg

I agreed. Moving my army down from Shakas border to the dwarfs, hoping he won't do anything stupid towards my 6th city. Also, I got him to spare Horseback riding, so now I start getting Elephants also. Much happened this turn, I also found copper in my capital, increasing it's hammer with 2 and ½ (with forge).

Currency done, going for engineering, trebuchet, pikemen and +1 road movement is nice. I know I am basicly going the same tech as the AI:s but I feel like I have no choice currently.

My 6th city have grown really well, once those boarders expanded it has been a skyrocket.

What I want now, is a great general to put on a chariot to get me a healer...

Bismarck comes and ask the same thing as the dwarf did before. 170 g for literature. Yes! Next turn I get something new...
attilathehuntm1.jpg

First, my heart rate actually went up with a number, but then I saw what the "large number" really was:
attilathehun2ht2.jpg

Construction done, feudalism next for those lovely longbowmen.

A few turns later, feudalism is done and I go for guilds. The war versus the dwarf is quite uneventful so far. He has sent a few stacks to my south town but to no success. However, my mini SoD is going currently for one of his lesser town.
minisodsy3.jpg

The next turn, Ivan the terrible is born, a great general of the dwarfs
. But, as we all know, dwarfs (or little people) doesn't like terrible people, so he died.

The same turn, I made my first conquest in this war!
myfirstconqueril7.jpg

I decided to keep that town. Sheep, wheat, a few hills and sure, two tundra but still quite good. And I got my first general so my healer is joining my less-mini SoD. Something good, is that towns usually keeps their granary, which is replaced with my UB that gives culture instantly. This is just damn great. I can focus on defensive units instead. My power rating is climbing like mad also, 1.5 to the dwarf and 0.7 to shaka!

Found a barbarian city a bit east of my southern city, send of a couple of units to practice siege warfare. And got me some extra gold to play around with. Normally I would stop my science to upgrade my obsolete axemen, but since the dwarf has such a bad army currently, I can afford not doing it.
barbcityrazedzz2.jpg

Damn, just healed my SoD when the French became a vassal of Shaka. This is bad, and not unexpected. A war with Shaka will be impossible to win. Well, I gained one town and lost nothing.
dwarfvassalvy3.jpg

Guilds done, going for philosophy. I shall try to get a few wonder, which me luck, for the other continent seems to be taking them all. Also, I got another GS, saving him to help lightbulb education.
gs2fz7.jpg

Got a quest, build castle. Well, that shouldn't be a problem. A castle in every single damn town. Thanks
questcd7.jpg

Philosophy done, getting nationalism and going to try to snatch mahal for a Golden Age.
tech3xy0.jpg

Changed my mind, going optics, then nationalism. I need to make contact with the others.

Optics in, start building 2 caravels and send them away. back to nationalism. Nothing happens beside the fact Shaka will kill me.

Several turns pass by, I am working on my health, science, spreading my religion and military. Things seems pretty dark for me, but I won't give up. This has actually been one of the hardest monarch game I have had. Anyway, I got a trade that made me use my scientist:
trade4mw9.jpg

Meet Wang, traded bananas for corn. Very welcome with my health problems.
wangkonyk7.jpg

Next turn I meet Stalin...
stalineu4.jpg

Some good news! We found spices! Yay
spicemq2.jpg

With nationalism I get a few offers on techs, which I will take and hope I get the mahal anyway (9 turns to build it). Also, I got the event that I proved the world is round. Traded music for 260 gold with shaka. Time to try to get a good diplomatic situation.

Meet Darius, the last AI, and got more techs for nationalism
dariuszf2.jpg

Lost the race to Mahaj, Stalin that bastard! ANyway, some gold.

Shaka comes and demand nationalism. Well, he just has three turns left on it so he can have it!
shakademandsnationcm2.jpg

However, I won the race to liberalism! I actually took constitution, all the other techs can be traded now or soon. And I want democracy.
liberalismbg5.jpg

Also, the dwarf broke free from Shaka. That time must have been a pain for him. I am thinking on saving him from his pain.

Going to do something people might find foolish, but bare with me. I got a GS, which I will use to get a GA. The reason, I have several building that I must finish in my cities before a war with the dwarf. At the end of the GA, I wish to use it to change civis for promotions to my units.
gs3lp8.jpg

Traded liberalism for printing press with Darius. Liberalism for gunpowder from Wang. And Drama for 230 gold from Bismarck.

My SoD. I also changed civic to vassalage, theocracy and Selfdom (cheapest). Then I DoW'ed the dwarf!
mysodld6.jpg

First city taken from the dwarf, lost only four catas. One catas manage to withdraw against all odds! 0.4! Then the trebuchets had all 85% to win so I threw in them also for the exp.
dwarflostfirstcityeh1.jpg

The next turn, I got a decent trade. Liberalism vs economics with Shaka. I will however wait until after the war with the change. Also, a General in my 6th city. I settled him there also.

Democracy is in, starting on corporation (for more cash). My capital joins the race for statue of liberty.

Dwarf looses his second city, and I kept this one also.
dwarflostsecondcitygb4.jpg

And I am not so puny anymore!
notsopunyis1.jpg

Shaka's pretty big, but I think you might be able to take him down, your stack is pretty impressive. He'll definitely have to get taken out sometime before the game is finished... but don't let him strike first, choose your own battle. Preferably as soon as you're able to get a tech lead on him... possibly with infantry and fighters. Right now you can just focus on your current war though.

P.S. It's spelled N-A-P-O-L-E-O-N. ;)

All right, here we go for the last update.

This time, I throw myself straight into the action. The war with the dwarf continues.

A few turns pass, my troops move to thier next target and corporation gets done. Now I am going for more military, thus chemistry and later military science for grenadiers.

Shaka comes with an interesting offer that I take!
trade1jt9.jpg

Wang comes asking I want to join against Stalin. I quite refuse, I have enough on my hands.

My SoD is standing outside of Paris. With it, is my last axemen. I decided to suicide him! 7% chance to win, and the bastard wins! Well, guess I have to upgrade him later for that. Damn. And Paris is on a hill, which is quite annoying really. But my Trebuchets are so great and it falls as soon as cultural defence hits zero with minimal losses.
paristakenrn4.jpg

A great General joins me, I settle him in my capital.

I get a picture of Shakas SoD, won't be easy taking him out.
shakassodiv5.jpg

Got a decent trade with bismarck
trade2ir6.jpg

Darius also got the statue of liberty. Damn, just had a few turns left. Anyway, got a 1000 gold for it.

Another interesting event:
eventil4.jpg

I actually sent him to exile. The war wareiness is beginning to be a pain so.

Another turn, another city. However I raised this one.
cityrazedga6.jpg

The war is reaching it's end, so I changed my civics:
civics1us6.jpg

Going to end up with having a little cultural war with shaka with my new cities. But I will have a real war with him quite soon also. He has to go.

Rheims taken. And I kept it.
rheimsgd0.jpg

Military science is in! Next on our list is military tradition. Traded liberalism and democracy for rifeling with Bismarck. Shaka already has those two techs so it wont hurt anyone. And it even made him pleased. Yay, that makes me feel so good, the worst player is pleased with me.

Next turn, Bismarck got Scientific method from Shaka, and he is willing to trade it for corporation and military science. I will not make the trade since Shaka doesn't have military science yet.

Got a GE, saving him for some important wonder.
gerl3.jpg

Another town. Kept this one also, not such a good city but rice and cows. Hopefully I can get some culture building up to prevent Shakas madness.
anothertownba8.jpg

Another town. This one, I did raze, it took to much tile from my two other cities around.
anothertown2oc9.jpg

Military tradition done, time for steam power. (I do avoid scientific method, it obsolete my GL)

Used my GE to build Wall street in my commerce town.

So, another town. I kept this because of the whale. (No SS, doesn't work with ImageShack).

Also, got a GS and built an academy in my commerce city.

I saved the world from the dwarfs!
nomoredwarfuv0.jpg

Time to rebuild everything and get prepared for my biggest challange in this game.

Assembly line is done, going for Steel

The turns are quite uneventful. I mostly rebuild the tile improvements from the computer and preparing for a huge war.

Steel became understood, time to create a national wonder! And I know exacly where. Next is Railroad.

This is quite interesting. Bismarck is the puniest empire of them all, he has just three cities. Yet he is still quite advanced. I got another trade with him that I find quite decent
trade4mt9.jpg

Railroad done. Now biology and then medicin. When I get medicine I will switch my civics for complete all out on war and begin taking Shaka down. Currently I stand at 0.4 of his power but with upgrade to my obsolete units and all the infantry I am training now it will change!

Biology is in, +1 food per farm will help some. But what I really need is the +6 health civic.

Seems as Shaka has become friendly. Well, we will see for how long. Anyway, he made me an offer I cannot refuse.
trade5bj2.jpg

More turns passes by. But medicin just came in and with it I prepare more to fully wage war. I will also get Police state when it's available. The clash is about to happen!

So, we made a last trade with shaka before the war...
trade6hd3.jpg

Excellent news!
shakawarsondariuses4.jpg

Stalin is so kind
trade7ps4.jpg

Last civic change. Police state.
civics3lx0.jpg

Now, Shaka has hopefully large number of his troops away. This is my two SoD. First SoD is a little less. Paris is in a very dangerous position. He has railroad directly to it. So I moved 10 infantry there to protect it.

sod1ox6.jpg

sod2me2.jpg

Also, towns very likely to get attacked has a large number of infantry and cannons in them to defend themselfs. Let's have some fun!

Hello.

In an attempt to fix my days rhythm, I played civilization to 10 in the morning and slept just to one o'clock. This worked, I am now waking up at the time of lectures at the university instead of going to bed when they usually start. However, I needed something to do that night. So I played my game, really tired most of the game and so on, so the game played was a disaster. I will not post the last screen shot but I will describe how it went.

I killed the dwarf's, teched infantry and cannons and started building them like mad. Eventually I reached 0.8 of Shakas power and starting to prepare a war. However, a few turns before I declared war, he went to war with Darius on the other continent. So I let it pass a few more turns so he could send over a lot of troops.

The war started and he had truly huge armies. His SoD's went up to 20-25 units. Luckily, my both went to 60-70. So I took down his army, but due being tired and so on, I played truly crap. Truly.I spend something like 1920 to 1960 on the war, had -10 happiness from being the world villain. However, I had such a huge number of luxury resources and right civics and buildings to sustain it. But my tech went down the drain, and even thought I took his cities one after another it ended up with me taking the last cities from gunship while I still had my infantry...And at least artillery. But by this time I controlled my entire continent, and it was to small for domination. With a little micromanagement I manage to get 3.3k breakers per turn. And decided to get space victory. Only one problem, I missed Stalin's rush towards culture and realized it to late.

But this was my kick off try in having a live game. I am not near the others I have read having an live game, but I will continue this. And what I learned most from this game. I have to split up the game in more segments. Now I updated in to large chunk. Not good, doesn't involve people in giving tips and comments.

Next live game will have a more specific goal (still, if I have to adapt to the environment, I will) and more details. And to keep the great pdf with all leaders playstyle up, so I will know who to look out for mostly. This time I had have only minor experience with Shaka before and didn't know he was such a backstabber. Well, until next time.

good stuff, man.....i was following this since you started it and definitely enjoyed it

looking forward to your next

:goodjob:

That was an interesting game, sorry about losing. If I may offer some advice, it would be to GET MORE WORKERS. Your capital was underimproved in 1000 AD, something that cannot happen on higher levels. An improved capital with bureaucracy can result in 200 beakers per turn by 1000 AD instead of the 100 or so you had.

When you wrote that I should have improved my capital, I was totally focused on hammers in it. I should have got some temporary cottages until Civil Service. But I couldn't make more improvement to it and thus I spend the worker in other town. However I need to open my doors a little more. And yes, next game will contain a lot more workers. I'm off now to generate a new map and start the new threat.
