Medieval European Mod II Preview

I was considering Wallachia, esp. with the excellent Vlad Tepes LH available, but it eventually lost to the 31-civ and population density limits (just like the Flemish, Persians or Teutonic Order & Kingdom of Jerusalem, which were postponed to a scenario). The main arguments were that for the most part of Middle Ages, Romanian lands were either under control of Hungary, Bulgaria (and that's the usual settling pattern on the map) etc. or seperated into 3 states, as you mentioned, Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania. Then, the map is rather densely populated in the Balkans. I'd definitely include Wallachia in Late Middle Ages when it was most prominent, but otherwise, I had to make 31 choices for the basic 700-1550 game :(
Thanks, I really didn't want to sound like I'm annoyed that it's not there. I just wanted to know what you're going to do with the territory. :)

They are all Muslim kingdoms. IIRC the Almohads are from the southern Spain / Morocco area, the Abbasids from the Mesopotamia / Syria area, and the Fatmids are from Tunisia / Egypt.

EDIT - Oh, and the Khazars were Turks.

Khazars weren't muslim. They converted from animism to Judaism.

ED & YP: Looks good. :) I assume the woodland makes use of the jungle gfx?

No it doesn't make use of the jungle graphic, but it does replace jungle (but I guess that was what you meant?).

Resources in the basic mod:
MEM_Feb_Resources.jpg

Gold is for hiring mercenaries. Timber is required for advanced naval units, ports, castles and some related wonders like Hansa or Venetian Arsenal. Tar is for naval units mostly. Wheat is required to grow (city size 2 & 3, granaries) and build mills. Other things are obvious.

With mrtn's help I re-populated the map so that it encourages players to trade not just luxuries but secondary strategic resources as well, since Eastern Europe is now the major food exporter, Sweden and eastern Baltic lands have most timber etc.

This is disabled for random maps, but Luxuries also enable building of merchant small wonders that produce shipments (VP + gold). Idea largely stolen from scenarios such as Twilight and Byzantium and Desert and the Mountain ;) however it does not require the resources in the city radius, so actual trading, not conquest, is enough to win this way. Not sure how this will turn out though, considering that the player will have a higher incentive to trade and thus, have a big advantage over the AI. NB maybe someone has an idea how to prevent the AI from building something in the capital? :crazyeye:

And for something different, my today's test with Almohads. Don't mind the wrong location of Valencia etc. it was a clean map game!

I wonder if I move LH previews here anyone will notice :mischief:

Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy

As before I'd love to hear about whatever needs changing before rendering. One thing I've heard is to that a court background would work better than the painting one (?). I know he's a bit older on the portrait but supposedly he ruled since the age of 23.

He looks fantastic. You did a great job matching the clothing!:goodjob:

Wow, this looks great!! [party]

But I do have one question. It's really just a question, it's not a proposal at all (I'm not Partizanac :p :D): what are you going to do with the lands of Moldavia and Wallachia? Which civ is going to get them? Or will they be empty lands to settle on? :)

And another question: I've never heard of Khazaria, Abbasids (same as Abbysinians maybe?), Almohads, and I'm not quite sure I've heard of the Fatimids. Where will the be placed on the map?

HEY!!!!
I just saw this!! :gripe:

So LH previews are what generates replies I guess ;)

I like the necklace you added.

Here's Philip with something pretty in the background... choose one!

@Partizanac
If you have any ideas, especially on how to make the Balkan states standing out more... units/buildings/abilities etc. Currently, Serbia is limited to "Serbian Knight" and "St. Sava's Nomocanon"... Similarly Hungary and Bulgaria is lacking.

I personally prefer the one on the right, though they're all good. He does match his portrait uncannily. :goodjob:

OK, when I were in high school the teacher told us that in medieval times Serbia mainly exported Jam, Honey (you've added that) and Pigs. So maby you can add those resources.

As for the LH I say the one in the middle...

I'll see what can I come up with the Serbian Medieval State, and maby other Balkan states... (don't know much about them in those times)

Holy Crap! He looks just like the guy in the portrait! Is he the one that gets the axe? :)

It was his son and the next duke, Charles, who got axed in the head, but I think such a small historical shortcut won't hurt ;)
