Meet the Modders

Indeed, but sadly I still can't play Civ3 of all things! I've found some promising workarounds though, fingers crossed. I also plan to make a retro VM or two, now that I have ALL the RAM.

 - :badcomp: ?

My German is only 50 years rusty & this is Dutch ( I think), but I could decipher it well enough to get through the "I'm not a robot" process. First time ever encountering such. :D

I guess the W in WWW is genuine. :P

First things noticed: nice big radiators, great air flow. Those are the qualities that last. Most other components change over the lifetime.
This is the first nice case I've had and I'm really happy with the design. It even has a convertible "soft top" with mesh and an extra fan. As infrequently as I rebuild, I try to prioritize longevity and stability over raw bang for the buck.

Looks pretty nice, and compact compared to my nearly 10-year-old behemoth. The 5800X is a great choice. I hadn't heard of anyone using Pop! OS on a custom build yet, but have only heard good things about it on System76 systems, so it's more so surprising that this is the first custom build I've seen with it.

Are you using a GPU you already had in the meantime? That's what I would do if I had to replace my system tomorrow; the prices are super high right now, if not as bad as a couple months ago.

I agree with longevity and stability being better than raw bang for the buck over the long term, and that case looks like a great choice not only for those but for sound dampening and maintainability as well.

Yes, this 760 is actually the newest component of old glorfindel, and a secondhand gift from a friend who took pity on me when the original 465 died. I'll probably get a RX 6700 or 6600 XT once those are widely available.

Pop! has quite a following on Reddit, which is where I found the Gnome extensions I used to make it look more like Windows than Ubuntu.

*scratches head* Why would you want to make it look more like Windows than Ubuntu? unless it's Windows XP, best system ever

Also, I got some instructions from nick0515 on how to run Civ3 on Linux. Do you want me to forward you a copy?

I prefer the look of the Windows taskbar, simple as that.

I've seen the thread, but I have the Steam version and there are issues with specific versions of Wine/Proton. Supposedly a patch with an old revision fixes it.

Oh! You're using the Steam version! All my advice would be for nought then. I've never tried Proton: I still have my '00s triple-disk installation set in working order, fortunately.

Why would you use Ubuntu's version of GNOME when you could be using vanillla GNOME in all it's glory (I'm a GNOME fanboy).

Also, my Linux install instructions sadly no longer work for me :(

Upon reading this, Takhisis slumped down in his chair in front of the computer, wishing the weather and COVID restrictions didn't prevent him from falling down onto his knees as it started to rain upon a devastated landscape around him as would have fitted his emotions more properly. But he still felt the dismay all the same, just without the proper scenic background.

Yeh it's a real bummer. I've scored a free oldish not very good computer with Windows 7 on it. May set that up just to play Civ 3 and give up on playing it on Linux. Not that I have much time for playing or modding...

Now here's an interesting example of synchronicity: I just - as in, 3 mins ago - PM-ed Blue Monkey that, whereas, in both German & English, "zeitgest" means/connotes, "the spirit of an age," it's one of those German compound nouns, whose 2 parts, taken separately, directly translate as, "Time Ghost ..." Yeah, I know, it's not "Space Ghost," but what else would you expect from an e-missive sent under the imprimatur of the infamous law firm of Dewey, Cheetum, and Howe?

Space and time are just two ways of measuring the continuum of reality.

... Well, if we're going to go there (OT??) as Grace Slick sang, "Either go away or go all the way in ..."

I believe that being taught that "Space-time" is (as the name itself implies) simply a combination of two completely different facets of a macro ("above" the quantum level) reality is incorrect. This is because are indeed thoroughly inseparable. My own interpretation is that we perceive as "time" is a thorough transition of states (of everything we think we perceive) at a constant "rate." This "rate" is that of one Planck unit. (The Planck unit is the "threshold" of the "quantum level," wherein neither "space" nor "time" exist, and "reverse causality" - what we would perceive as an event in the future causing another to occur in the past - exists, and, of course, wherein "quantum entanglement" occurs, with two quantum particles "exchangng" information at a rate faster than the speed of light ... )

As a certain Sophist said, ‘in the land of fanaticism debate is anachronic’.

So, in a certain place… something is in the wrong time?

Just a thought-provoking line.
