Greetings (first post for me:salute:),

with more & more civs getting revealed and with Meiji being the only japanese civ basically confirmed at this point,
finding a satisfying historial path seems very hard to do.

So what if;

Meiji is only unlocked through gameplay & leader!

Making it so would make Meiji a rarer and harder to find civ to unlock, which would fit quite nicely into Japans
rather secluded and isolated history before the Meiji Empire.

A lot of the civ unlocks are very loose. I could see Mongolia, Ming, and Majapahit all being candidates for unlocking Meiji.
I'd consider it to be Majapahit and Hawaii.

Indeed. Having a Medieval/Renaissance Chinese lead-in to Japan would wound someone's pride, I think. Plus, Hawaii and Majapahit, being islanders, may have starting biases or uniques that syngergize with Japan.

Hawaii at least has relationships with Japan, with a number of people Japanese living and visiting Hawaii today. As for Majapahit, yeah, I just considered the whole island theme.

I think most likely they would just want to keep Ming going into Qing, for right now. I could see Ming going into Joseon Korea when they are introduced.

For the 30 challenge one of my connections was Inca into Meiji. To get my system to work I kinda needed something from the Americas to other continents. I went for Inca because they possibly sailed west at some point and linked them to Meiji since South America has had a surprisingly high amount of migration from Japan. Which is all very loose connection but it was sort of best fit for what I was aiming for. The same logic applies for Hawaii or I considered Haida as well.

Otherwise I feel like linking via Buddhism or even Portugal/Dutch via a spread of military technology sense.

Yup. I think Firaxis would not want to have either chinese or korean civs unlocking Japan... That is a ****storm waiting to happen.
I'd agree, but I'd also assume they'd have similar concerns about the Hawaii or Shawnee unlocking the US...

From what Ed has said, it seems like the eventually gamenplan might include ancient and exploration era versions of Japan ala India and China, but tbd.

Yeah, very likely for Japan to at least have an eventual exploration age version, if not also an Antiquity one. It is probably just that with so limited slots they didn't want to have a full path, but also wanted a Japan in being a big market. And if they were going to do a full path on release, between Japan and China, I can see they picking China because it is a more sensitive market (as in, not just the player base, but the goverment itself can end up banning a game if they don't like China depiction on it).

I understand it is difficult to have multiple pathways at launch (31 Civs the most at any launch)
I'm sure we get some gap fillers over the first year or so. I'm also hoping they open up unlock pathways to more than just "civ ,Civ leader", or "Horse, Civ, Leader"

3 seems too few. I'd hope we could get, Civ, Civ, Civ, Leader, Gameplay Focus (Econ, Science, Culture, Military), Game situation (Horses, cities on rivers/coast, 6 different luxuries)
I want to mix and match as much as possible to suit how my game is going, not necessarily force a 2nd Age civ choice just to get the the 3rd age civ I want.

Leader.
Itou Hirobumi.
Why FXis ignores him completely?

Gameplay
.. so far any antiquity civ that represents Early Japan is not yet come to be. there could be Yamatai Kingdom being starter. And at Age II. Shogunate... Alternatively, Player can begin as Han but in Second Age. Player has to be Itou Hirobumi AND Choose Shogunate.

Because he can provoke the hard backlash from many Asian gamers, especially Korean and Chinese I guess. He has being considered as the one of the most famous politicians in the Empire of Japan who claimed and lead the Japanese imperialism over the surrounding Asian nations. Both Korea and China are commemorating General An Junggeun for his assassination of Ito. You can find General An's memorial in Harbin station.

I think Hawaii was just put in Exploration instead of Modern to go to Meiji and America. Maybe Majapahit will also go to Meiji. I don't think they would do Ming > Meiji, as there might be complaints.

If Majpahit is the stepping stone towards Meiji Japan. then the Medieval galleys Well of Souls labelled as Kalam is in fact Majpahit warship ?
