I just have two right now. When I lived in New Jersey with my GF's mother we had four (her two & my two) but when we moved she left her cats with her mom. 
I really like having four and always bug her to take them back whenever she next goes back. Her mom neglects them anyway (leaving them home alone almost all the time and forgetting to give them fresh water).

Overall, cats are pretty clean animals (short-hairs anyway). I don't even have a litter box (they go outside). The only drawback is they're always catching lizards around here and dragging them into the house.Too bad.

I think it would be neat to have a lizard that caught cats and dragged them back to the house. All the fun of being a cat lady with none of the bother of collecting the cats myself.

Here's my Tiny Toy Poodle, Shelby. With one of his favorite squeeky toys:
Love this little guy MORE than my own life (wouldn't hesitate to run into a burning building for him). That's my old room, and all that stuff behind the dog on the left side are his old toys.
I'll try and get a pic of my Alaskan Malamute (Bear) up tonight.

Here's Bear:
Not the kind of dog you want to get PO'ed. He snaps steak bones with one bite. From the ground to the top of his head (standing on his hind legs) he's about 5' tall. He's not trained to pull sleds, but he can pull my dad (around 190-200lbs) up and down our old driveway (about 1/4 mile total).
@El Justo: I'm honestly not a huge fan of labs. Everywhere you look you see one. As for German Shepherds, my dad had one as a kid, my uncle not too long ago. But now they're more on Malamutes. Personally I wouldn't mind having one, but the downside to leeching off your parents health insurance in college is that you have to live at their house.
Maybe later I'll get one. My mom also has a thing for Tiny Toy Poodles, and they usually end up becoming fiercely loyal to me (as I'm generally the nicest to them). I also like them because you don't see them that often, around here at least.
