Memory-fix by Harkonnen is out!

Harkonnen, maybe you should have your installer clear out the Civilization 4 cache folder automatically or by option, as it is known to cause various anomalies with Civilization 4 for different configurations.

Harkonnen, thank you for all your hard work and also for helping support everyone with questions.

I have a P4, 512 RAM and GeForce 4 440MX card-hopefully will be replacing vid card and increasing RAM after Christmas)

In the meantime I have installed your patch, but not had much more success. I have vid mem usage set to 30 as per your instructions to the other 440 owner. Is there anything else I can try or check- or is it simply a limit of the video card that is not really going to be fixed without some kind of upgrade?

changing insane mode from 0 to 1 did not seem to make much of a difference- but I am experiencing the chesire cat leader syndrome, as well as totally grayed out leader boxes occassionally (especially early and late game-- mid game seems ok?)

Hi Hark,

i just want to congratulate and thank you for an excellent patch.

At first, your patch wasn't working as excellent as I expected it to be. My system specs:

Athlon XP 2200+
Inno3D GeForce 6600GT
512MB PC3200 RAM

Initially my AGP aperture was set at 128MB. After installing your patch, there was some improvement. But around 1800's in the game (small or standard map size), graphical problems I experienced pre-patch came back (occurs when diplo screen or wonder movies pop up).

I tried different settings of vid_mem_usage from 80-160 but no go. Even turned insane_mode=0 but still not much difference.

Afterwards, I read in Post #1 that AGP aperture should be set to max. So I experimented and changed AGP aperture to 256MB. Lo and behold, I just played the smoothest game of Civ4 to-date.

My settings now are:

vid_mem_usage=80, insane_mode=1, AGP aperture size = 256MB

Just stopped playing to tell you this in case you might find this useful. Again, many thanks and a job well done. :goodjob:

Artagel, Is your vid card a 64MB version? I have a GF4 MX440 without any problems but mine is 128MB. Maybe that is the difference? I now have the latest driver which did solve graphics problems I was having too.:confused:

hello its to get that self-install tool. i guess its not finished yet, but when it is, how will i be able to see if it is finished? (i did subscribe, but when i made my username on this site, i told them not to send email to me : so, will i get the subscribed message, or wont i because i asked not to get mail from this site in the beginning?)

HI, Hark

I just want to say thank you for all of your hard work and wondering if you could or someone could help me out. I am/was having the exact same problem as pachu and I ended up removing your patch.

I running a Pent 4 2.8 gig, 1 gig RAM, ATI 9600 Pro vid card. I was using the Catalyst 5.12, but I was having CTD and moved it back to 4.11 and made the changes in the civ.ini file, as you stated to do. This helps with all performance exept the wonder movies. They're choppy. So, if I'm running 4.11, where is the AGP for this version or would you recommend that I change back to 5.12 and install your patch? Basically, I'm just trying to get the wonder movies to work properly. Other than that, my game runs smooth with huge map, 11 civs, prince level.

Thanks Harkonnen

With Vid_mem_usage to 32 or 150 your big game is loaded correctly, unplayable on my low system, but loaded at least. With Vid_mem_usage to 80 your game is not loaded at all, I reveive a dll error message.

I don't have a big saved game my system that I can test now. I maked the test with your saved game and it's to big for my spec and I can't play it, too much swap. I begin a game and let you know if my later game is faster. But your patch seem to have an effect also on the beginning of the game. My only problem is with the patch, in diplomacy now the others leaders have no eyes (They had it before the patch). I will try to disable Insane mode because I had no time yesterday to do more test. I let you know what is happening.

Thanks for your great works

Denis one word...Wonderful.

Huge maps now playable , you've saved / reallocated enough memory to make the game playable with 512 Mb Ram..won't pretend to know how you've done it :) but thanks again.

Btw , I have no problem alt-tabbing using full screen mode with insane_mode set to true (but why would I want to ?..I'm playing Civ isn't that enough?)

Oh and if Firaxis don't get in touch with you to collaberate on an official patch ..then they are fools, I'm wondering what you could do with access to the full code...:crazyeye:

Off to rule my now playable nation of over 30 cities ..mu haah haaa :)

WOW!

System Specs
P4 2.8 GHz @ ~3.0 GHz
1,024 MB PC2400 RAM
eVGA GeForce 6800, 128MB video card running at 375/800 w/ vertex shader unlocked.

Version 1.00
No problems at all. Game ran beautifully fine for me at 1024x768 with 2x AA turned on. Movies were smooth, game ran fine, crashes were nowhere to be seen. Only an occassional corruption on the map view in the bottom right of the screen.

Version 1.09
Corruption of map view is gone, but ALL wonder movies stutter horribly and do not play smoothly no matter what settings are used. Videos appear as a slide show. Very dissapointing, though there are no other issues that I've come across. If the movies could be fixed, I'd be a very, VERY happy man.

Hark's Patch
vid_mem_usage = 64
insane = 1
Resolution = 1024x768
Anti-Aliasing = 4x

Everything runs silky smoother and the videos play even BETTER than they did in version 1.00. (And even then, they played with out any really noticeable hitches). So Hark's patch has corrected the stuttering movies and is allowing me to play the game with the 1.09 updates, but with the 1.00 performance that I was happy to have. GREAT JOB! I haven't played a full game yet as I just got back from being out of state, but I am very psyched about this fix. :D

I tested the patch on my computer and I noticed much less swapping when exiting the game, so the patch really does something!

My specs:
Barton 3000+
512MB DDR400
Radeon 9800 o/c
Windows 98 First Edition:eek:

Good job, Harkonnen, I noticed you live in Karelia (Karjala for us finns;) ) I thought nothing good could come from there, but you proved me wrong! :goodjob:

If settings affect nothing (even minimal effect of 'vid_mem_usage = 32', 'insane_mode = 0'), then I don't know what to say...

The coming release will adjust itself better in-game (so less to preconfig), probably it'll help with this problem.

Also note that 'low' graphics settings sometimes affect appearance of some game entities. For example, caravels turn red/green/purple (civ color) with 'low' settings. I don't think that ocean squares are the same problem, but still it's possible.

BTW, did you try to play with vertex shaders before my fix? There were two "solutions" before my fix (and even before official 1.09) which I pesonally did not like for their impact on post-fix state and on other games:

1) Turning off AGP
2) Setting pixel/vertex shaders to 1.1

I think you have AGP on, at least I talked about that many times in this thread, but what about shaders?

Hi Harky!

Yes it's there even with 32/0.
I use all high settings.
Never changed shader settings even don't know where to do that.
Also never turned off AGP. I don't have smartgart but dxdiag says it's enabled (agp texture acceleration).
Maybe those ocean textures don't like to be in video memory or what?

Thx Harkonnen,

Now I can finish some of my saved games and play an Earth Scenario. Selecting an Earth scenario before your patch resultated in a hanging computer. I think Fireaxis should do an internal investigation why they could not get the game fixed and you can. I think you have a bright future in the gaming industry.

Harkonnen,

you are my hero! Thank you so much for all your efforts! My large map game runs now quickly and I'm able to actually enjoy the gameh. Before it it was so sluggish that it was almost unplayable. Also suffered of CTD's after playing a while. No CTD's anymore.

Your 1961 savegame runs nicely. I started a huge map game now and expect it to be a blast. :D

I got 1Gb ram, Pentium 4 2.66GHz, ATI Radeon 9700 128Mb, medium graphics, default harkonnen.ini settings

When I play longer, the game turns slow and sluggish but then I just restart it and it's quick and nice again. So I'm very happy civver.
