Memory-fix by Harkonnen is out!

ALL
It looks like I've tracked 1st memory leak issue... not sure yet, but if so - it's video memory leak, so it migh be the problem with CTDs and leader-head problems.

P.S: I mean leak in civ4 code, not in my fix.

---

P.P.S: No, was my bug in counting texture sizes :)

This was the issue with 1.09 (not my patch). 1.09 resets many configuration options. I think "advisor pop-ups" is off within civ4 options. But again, that's not about my patch.

If leaders were the only your problem, setting back 'insane_mode = 1' might increase performance back, still keeping them "all-pieced"

Ninja2
It might work, but so far most working recommendations should ignore AGP aperture size. It must be set to highest in BIOS, but it shouldn't be considered in 'vid_mem_usage' calculations. That said, for 256Mb of video memory, you should set 'vid_mem_usage' to 150 or 180 (depending on low/high settings in civ4 options, especially for textures).

Thanks! I will consider that when the update comes out. Size is small, but my "sampo.ru" sometimes goes down for 4 hours about once a week. CFC forum also crashes too oftenly last days (I wonders if that's due to fix link posted in many places by Fixarism missionaries like you :))

arringtonbros
Well, so far you are the first GF2 user who benefited with my patch :) I feel sad that some GeForce4 Ti 4200 users still can't make it working as it should... Probably the update will make it, we'll see.

Lary33
What's the actual problem? Do you see savegame file or not? In case you see, does it start loading? I was always loading games from in-game menu, that's why this minor bug slipped off my hands into release unchecked.

Thanks! BTW, you should keep your AGP aperture at max, so 64 is nice as long as it's maximum allowed.

lolmeup
Nice! I like when you guys don't just leave but still struggle... and get it fixed sooner or later. That's respected from my side! :)

vid_mem_usage = 32
You may go full-screen mode as well... Just try not to alt-tab, at least frequently.

If you have 'ATI Tray Tools' or 'xFire' running, turn them off. If they are off and the problem reappears, please look for "c:\hook.dat" file and send it over to me: "headden@karelia.ru". I am not sure I will manage to solve it with ATI Tray Tools (probably I will have to talk with its developer), but I will make everything possible to make it working with xFire as it's essential to run in certain cases.

Everyone not mentioned
Thanks for your kind words! I didn't reply personally because you had no problems (that's support thread after all). But I have read and noted everyone. Thank you!

Hi

I would like to thank you for a great job you've done. I think I have a pretty robust machine that I assembled myself: 3.2 Gh, 1 Gb RAM, 128 MB Radeon, etc. I'm also a big fan of Civ game and started playing it with Civ II. Still think it is one of the best computer strategy games. You can imagine my level of frustration when the game started crashing during play. And, here you are with the improvment! I can say that I played Standard size for 4 hours and with no crashes. Very impressive! I have not tried to play Huge, but hope it will be OK. I opened your file though and could not see the map at all - only cities and some images. Not sure why. Anyway, you've done definitely a great job. Hope Firaxis will pseed up with fixes and make us happier again.

Thanks

I have a Geforce Mx 440 64 MB Video Card.
What should I set as my video mem usage?
Insane Mode=1
And I dont play in windowed mode because i cannot use mouse to move around the map.
Anyways, I get slow down (worse than before applying Harko's patch) around theyear 2000... I restart the game and can play for probably another 15 minute before getting the slow down.

the other specs are 512 MB RAm, 2.6 Ghz processor.
thanks
Make sure the following setting is corect in your Civ4.ini file:

; Allow Mouse Scrolling in Windowed mode
MouseScrolling = 1

It must be set to (1) one to use the mouse scrolling. It is a bit hard to get used to using also - you have to hold the mouse very very close to the window border to get it to scroll. (also note the mouse cursor may not show up until you get past the intro movie stuff...it is still there, you just can't see it -you can 'guess' where it is to drag window around desktop, but you just can't see it.)

Heh... Over half of the post in this subforum is for this thread alone. I imagine that if you were able to charge for the patch and the service Harkonnen, I would be you would find a few who would be willing to pay (just hypothetical of course :P).

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie here, and a fan of CIV 4, of course!!:D

What I want to ask is how to set "Sir" (For making this fantasy patch:goodjob: ) Harkonen 's patch correctly in order to get maximum effect. Below is my low-end PC specs:

2.0 Ghz Celeron Processor
512 Mb Ram
128 Mb Radeon 9550 Video card

Should I set to vid_mem_usage = ??? , and insanemode = 0 or 1 ?
I prefer Full Mode than Window Mode, is it Ok ?

Please, I appreciate all who willing to help me, a newbie, and all of my appreciation goes to Mr. Harkonen again, if he also help me this time :)

when i load in the patch 1.09 i get an error message saying:
error 1706. no valid source could be found for product Civ 4, windows installer could not continue.

any ideas?

thanks.

i uninstalled the game, and am trying to start over.

Randy

it works now!
it is almost surreal that it goes at the right speed.

Thank you! You are a genius!

Thanks! I will get back to mirror suggestions when the update is ready.

vid_mem_usage = 60, insane_mode = 1
(you may try increasing vid_mem_usage up to 80 if this causes no problems)

Well, I finally had the opportunity to try out this patch last night. Earlier, I was unable to play maps larger than standard, and resolutions above 1024x768. If I tried playing larger maps, or went to higher resolutions, I would get random CTD's after less than 20 turns.

Well, this patch is a small miracle. I started up a huge map in 1280x1024, and the game ran for an hour with not a single CTD!

So huge kudos to Harkonnen, it is quite a feat you have accomplished!! :goodjob:

However, there are a few graphical anomalies now... for instance, one of my neighbors ships have all turned golden! It's not a big deal, it just looks weird.

My system specs:
Athlon XP 3200
1 GB of ram
PoV GF 6800GT w/ 256 MB ram, running 78.30 drivers (99% sure)

Patch settings:
mem_usage: 180
Insane=1

With this setup, I am able to play (at least initially, when the world is still undiscovered) completely swap-file free. I am playing in full screen mode, and alt-tabbing doesn't work, as expected.

Ninja2
As I have noted, 'golden' ships are a case of 'low' details. I may be wrong, but I remember this problem without my fix too.

If alt-tabbing is essential for you, just set 'insane_mode = 0'. With so much physical and video memory it might cause more a trouble than savings

Harky

Sent you a PM ref mirror - am off to work now back this evening uk time

Thanks for everyone who are still subscribed for this thread. The intermediate release will be released in 9 hours from now. It's completed at home, but I am at work now. I will need some testing... thanks.

Zydor
Yes, I have answered... Will test it as well with this release.

Update:
insane_mode=0 restores alt-tabbing, and the golden ships are now back to normal. Oh, and I tried zoom out to globe view, this did not cause a crash. I'm incrementally increasing graphics settings, I'm now almost maxing everything now, and so far civ'ing is sweet! :D

My drivers are 77.72, by the way.

Hi, Yes, I see savegame files. From Main Menu I am not able to load autosaves but only autosaves. My save files I can.

First off... This is my first post to the forum, AFAIK... I want to start by saying THANKYOU to all at the forum for years of info and entertainment...

I wanted all of you to know that it wasn't just the old or the little computers that are having these problems.

My computer has a 2.8 dual core processer, Gig of ram and a 256meg x600 "hyper" memory ATI card... and this game still runs like crap.

But, being a junky, I had to try anything and everything to make it run. I also have to have the graphics look good. With this patch I can turn evrything up to high, and run AA @ 4, but only with a standard size map. Even with this it still lags and stutters.

I post because I've been expirimenting with the vid_mem settings. It seems when I set it to the recommended 180, it does not perform well. Alot more lag. I have run it as low as 50 ( note to self... DON'T do that again. ) but have found 150 to work pretty well. Also, the vid card is PCI "express???", the newfangled PCI standard, not AGP...

I was wondering if I should be setting this differently due to that, and what ( if any ) difference due to no AGP apature stuff.

Thankyou VERY much for saving this game for me. I can't play it 100% the way I want to, but without your work, I would not be playing it AT ALL.

Tim aka... antracer

Thank you Harky!
You're almost in Finland like us too...
well anyway...
I have apc and a mac, and I just read that civ4 is to be realed for mac too (in early 2006). It's going to be nice to see that can they really make it for for mac themselves???
