Merz01 - Monarch OCC, Straight Up

Excellent work all. We are kicking some serious butt now and getting a GP every player turn. Almost to Liberalism and the amount of options we have is wonderful. I think we are almost over the hump. Keep up the good work gentlemen. :goodjob:

Cool. The twin goth swordsmen?

Remembers guys, we MUST KEEP BIG SWINGING ALIVE until we can build the Epic. If we lose him we have to start over getting a guy past 10. So bring him home, put him up in the palace, whatever.

I would have agreed to attack Vicky also. As long as she's at war with Mao she won't attack us. We only have to worry if they sign peace.

We want the universities up ASAP, that will solidify our tech advantage. We have plenty of health for the moment, so I suggest building the forge, then the Heroic Epic (so we no longer have to worry about keeping the swinging one alive), then the two universities.

Yes, definitely put our next prophet to a shrine. Long-term I notice Cyrus is willing to be confused if we flip more of his cities. I'm thinking I may have made a strategic mistake allying with Mao instead of Cyrus. Oh well.

oh big swinging is at the hill... not like that's dangerous yet so just run him back to berlin...

imo work a road up to the hill in north if only cause well we'll want to mine those hills sooner rather than later and a worker in the area is good.

also, if you wonder why I built farms outside of the city radius, I needed to get that isolated plains irrigated to farm it... yet keep the gottage on the grass south of it.
leave the extra farms alone.

Unless we want to buld a few watermills, we are done until lumberyards and rails regarding improving the city radius.

Hope for liberlism first.

Cheers!

Really? I did not know that.

Turn 165 (1050 AD)
Methos: Globe Theater will be done in one, and a granary will be done in two. Since the granary doesn't work until after growth I turn 'Avoid Growth' back on until it is finished. I'm not sure if this a good idea or not.
Methos: I decide to hook up the spices. They won't benefit us but we could always use them in trade.
Berlin finishes: Globe Theatre

Turn 166 (1060 AD)
Berlin begins: Granary
Methos: Big Swinging heads back to Berlin.
Archimedes (Great Engineer) born in Berlin

Turn 167 (1070 AD)
Velvet Kisses (Swordsman) promoted: City Raider I
Velvet Kisses (Swordsman) promoted: City Raider II
Damaged Roses (Swordsman) promoted: City Raider I
Methos: We have a Great Engineer. I merge him in as a super specialist.
Berlin grows: 10
Berlin finishes: Granary

Turn 168 (1080 AD)
Berlin begins: Forge
Methos: Crap! I was positive production was done before growth. Oh well.
Tech learned: Liberalism
Christianity has spread: Berlin

Turn 169 (1090 AD)
Tech learned: Printing Press
Research begun: Guilds
Methos: I forgot to mention the Chinese had a Christian missionary in Berlin.
Methos: I chose Printing Press as our free tech for the extra commerce from villages and towns.

Turn 170 (1100 AD)
Methos: Big Swinging makes it back to Berlin.
Berlin finishes: Forge

Turn 171 (1110 AD)
Berlin begins: Heroic Epic
Methos: Interesting. The Spanish city of Toledo is only 39% Spanish. Looks like someone is about to flip.

Turn 172 (1120 AD)
Methos: Cyrus's cities are poorly defended. So far two of his cities have had two longbowmen and a spear each.

Turn 173 (1130 AD)
Methos: Cyrus comes calling. Wants to give us his Compass and 10 gold for Paper. I decline.

Turn 174 (1140 AD)
Methos: Izzy demands Music, I say no.
Methos: Capac wants to trade us Guilds for Paper. Unfortunately we are 1 turn shy of researching it so I decline. I hate to say no to him.
Tech learned: Guilds

Turn 175 (1150 AD)
Research begun: Banking
Berlin finishes: Heroic Epic

Turn 176 (1160 AD)
Berlin begins: University

Turn 177 (1170 AD)
Tech learned: Banking

Turn 178 (1180 AD)
Research begun: Economics
Johannes Kepler (Great Scientist) born in Berlin

Turn 179 (1190 AD)
Methos: Wow! To great people in my turnset! We have a great scientist who I merge.
Methos: I drop research to 90%. We're down to 21 gold and thus puts us at +3 gpt.

Turn 180 (1200 AD)
Methos: Saladin demands we cancel our deals with the Persians. I don't recall anyone saying anything otherwise so I say no. I hope I didn't screw this up.

I left a worker with movement since I wasn’t for sure where to send him.

After building the Heroic Epic I chose not to build military units due to our -5 gpt. Instead I went with a university. Banking will be done shortly.

At 100% research any banks, grocers, markets, etc. won’t be used. So we may want to seriously consider leaving research at 90% once we get gold improving buildings up. Just a thought.

Unfortunately I don’t have the time to post more thoughts. I seriously didn’t have time to play this turnset but figured it wouldn’t take too long.

Here’s the 1200 AD save.

wow very interesting about another great engineer.

in a sense of super specing eng is the win as we get research no matter which spec it is and it provide much needed hammers.

and just to back ya up menthos, saladin demands alot, just allow him to hate on us as we are in a -4 relations pit due to religion with him.

anyway 2 Gp's is sweet too bad about no priest but life sucks! We really have a fantastic setup going on great people farms. with all those double speed national wonders you see how it makes up for philosophic in an occ?

let me look at the save just to see what our new hammers and research rate is.

Great turn menthos.

Cheers!

Wow this is the fastest SG I've ever seen...

After Economics we should go for Astronomy for the observatory, then beeline straight to Computers. Everything else we can trade for.

Pacifism is great, ain't it...

You don't get a diplomatic minus for refusing a straight-up trading offer, so that was OK I think.

ok well we are up on tech and our rate of research is about to take yet another jump with oxford.

econ is shoo-in for a free mechant which is 100% in the bag for us.... good call on the liberalism tech menthos.

a merchant super spec is good cash and it doesn;t pollute our pool of naturally formed great people.

As for cash prolly just trade a decent tech for a lowlife like compass and a lump sum of cash. Use that cash to get peace with liz.

econ is the first useful econ civic of freetrade so that's another 4 or 5 base commerce

as for tech goals after econ...

physics is a free scientist but we have to go the astronomy + scientific method route which obsoletes the great library. physics is required for computers... which is the conerstone of fiberoptics so that's a core tech path.

keep in mind astronomy is the 25% research observatory which is yum and shouldn;t be avoided for chemistry.

medicine is the holy grail of econ civics with a whopping +6 health mod. That's too good to pass up but need chemistry for biology. that's a long long ways away.

more immediate needs are pikes and +1 road movement from machinery. why? well if vicky goes after us, She must take the end round and come from the south now.. only realistic chance of that is a 2 move unit like knights and cav.. Pikes are a good upgrade and road movement means we need less military to respond to threats as we will not be getting railroads very soon and coal is hardly 100%. Good trade target.

Replaceable parts allows us to build on the forests... right now we not hurting on hammers tho so not sure how useful that is in the short term.

corporation nets us another 4 or 5+ base commerce from trade AND gives us acess to wall street. downside is that we need nationalism -> constitution to open the tech.

on the build front, seriously consider flooding greece with confusion to get him on capac's good side.. Capac and greece not getting along due to religion.

lots of infra to build though and a better military is always nice.

may want to go for two temples so we can make priest specs to tilt odds for a great profit.

Cheers!

berlin/london so hard to tell all these white people apart!

The B cities did me in. The message came up that a great leader was born in Beijing. Naturally I took this as us. Darn'ed if I could locate him. Than it was, oops, we're Berlin! :D Oh well, whether its B cities, or white borders, we'll figure it out.

I can play tonight. I feel bad about grs though. I can wait for him if everyone wants, or I can play my turns tonight.
Super job everyone! It is a pleasure to play with you guys and I am learning a lot. ;)

Yeah, good work so far. I think the key to winning this is going to be the number of GP we get and join. When I was comparing my lost OCC Monarch games with the winning saves posted on Apolyton, I frequently saw that their cities were pulling in 150+ beakers per turn from specialists alone.

Another key is going to be judicious use of wars. Not only do we have to involve the leading AIs in wars to blunt their space race, we have to be careful WHO they war against. I've lost games because I bribed the leading AI into a war against a much weaker civ, and that AI gobbled up the civ easily and then had twice the production and research capacity.

If you want to wait 48 hours for grs, that's fine too... we have been playing this SG very quickly and perhaps a delay to let us think things over would be good.

It's really no problem if you want to jump in now. Are you sure?

Yeah, it's cool. Please play your turn grs. :) There is a lot of playing to be done still. Lots of options and hard decisions to be made. ;)

see how this works so well is that merz and Liq share only ONE crack pipe...

that's right, at any given moment only one of us is :smoke:

the other is sober enough to make fun of the other til he passes the pipe.

next turns are going to just rock in terms of our output.. we nearly doubled our beakers in the last round and will double them again this one. Just silly.

Want to see the turns come in!!!

Cheers!

Off Topic: Question: With CivIV can you win by culture with an OCC? I've seen it mentioned but wasn't for sure if it really was considered a victory condition.

On Topic: Go ahead and join us Grs. I don't believe I've ever played an OCC SG that didn't rocket along. You might as well play along.
