we are offically FUNKED.
we are "safe" for now. but we need more troops ASAP.
THE BARBARIANS ARE COMING. BIG TIME. from the north.

we got another head for the Hydra and in 15 (or 17 in a sustainable rate) we get another.

oh, and Mecca has a christian missionary waiting there.
all the excitement... i forgot.

we can also adopt theocrachy (no spread of non state religion) but i think we dont need to (as we have ALL 4 known religions) :D

I finished GOTM1 and have now updated. Unless I'm mistaken Conroe (who is currently up) is the only other one who hasn't updated. No problem, as Conroe can play his current turns with 1.09. By the time his turns come back around either he'll have GOTM1 finished or it'll be after January 1st. :D

played. :D

625 Barb warrior decides to pillage our gold mine rather than capture Medina - which he could have done!

We have 2 cities at 625BC!?

450 Barb Axe obliterates our archer which was fortified in a forest - what the crap...he is still 4.1/5 health. :(

425 same Barb Axe kills fortified warrior in forest (with woodsman) and gains a promotion.

400 our archer manages to kill the fiend at Mecca, barely.

This is a crappy start for sure. We need cities, and units to defend cities bad. The third city site (from my dotmap) should be built next. We need to get that Iron hooked up.

Barbs are coming at us with archers and axes...

Played with 1.52.

Got it, will play tonight.

I don't see a choice but to keep building Archers until we get the Barbs off of our backs...

Didn't get to it last night, will do it tonight.

My goal is to get the barbs off our back (and yes, a settler i.p.)

Hey Guys,

Playing now. We're going to be getting a Great Prophet in 4 turns...any preferences? Shrine?

Turn 0 -- 400 BC

Goals this turn: Survive the Barbarian Onslaught
Build a Settler

Well, the second goal will be easy enough: I :whipped: the settler in Medina.

IT: Axeman dies assaulting Mecca, Archers coming our way.

Turn 1 -- 375 BC
Mecca: Archer > Archer
Medina: Settler > Archer

Worker goes back to Corn, gets an escort
Settler moves to Mecca

Turn 2 -- 350 BC

Remarkably, we're the 5th largest population in the world. There are two punier civs!

Confucianism has been found in a different land! Dag, looks like we won't be the 7-headed Hydra

I hurry the Archer in Mecca.

IT: :gripe: Barbarian archer barely beats the archer defending the worker. We're short a worker now.

Turn 3 -- 325 BC

Mecca: Archer > Archer

We kill off the Archer, but take too much damage.

Turn 4 -- 300 BC

Mecca: Archer > Archer
Moses is born in Mecca!

I don't do anything with Moses yet, as I want to wait until Code of Laws is in next turn.

IT: Barbarian Archer falls, I'm finally able to start the Settler South

Turn 5 -- 275 BC
Code of Laws in, start Monarchy, due in 12

Ok, Moses can add +1020 beakers for Civil Service (out of 1144), that will allow Maceman. I'm tending towards that instead of a shrine at this point.

Here's what I'm thinking: get Civil Service via Moses and research. Anyone prefer the shrine?

IMO I don't believe Civil Service is worth it. Yes the barbarians are a pain but I'm not for sure using a great prophet to speed up Civil Service to defeat them is worth the cost. We will be spreading our religions like crazy due to the variant so the money from the shrine will definitely be great.

Now, looking at it from a short-term aspect I understand your reasoning. If we don't do something about the barbarians they're going to stunt us enough to bring us to a crawl. A tougher unit would definitely help rid the continent of them. I'm just not sure a great prophet is worth it.

What about everyone else? What's your alls opinion?

@ChrTh: Where's the save? ;)

You don't get a save until I finish my turn :D

I'm thinking Shrine again, to be honest. I can start researching Civil Service on my own, it's going to take awhile to get the city built and the Iron online anyway.

Buddhist shrine?

Whoops! Er, as you can tell I'm very observant!

It seems like in most of my games, both SP and SG, barbs come in phases. I see a bunch of them for a little while than nothing for a while. Hopefully they start backing off.

If they do stop, start sending units out and parking them on hills to push the fog back. It is a great way to remove them. They only appear in the fog.

Tough decision! I really like the income from shrines. But, I really like Civil Service, as well. Not for Macemen. Oh, they are nice, but what I really like is irrigation and bureacracy.

How many turns would it take research CS on our own? If it is something like 4 turns, then build the shrine. If it is 20+ turns, I think we need to see if the +50% commerce would offset the shrine income loss until the next prophet. It probably won't, and then you will have to decide if the extra food and hammers is worth the gold cost. (assuming my ramblings make any sense, that is.)

Well, it looks like of those who posted that the preference is for a shrine. It also appears that if Civil Service is going to take a really looooooong time to research that it might be best.

So ChrTh, how long will it take to research Civil Service? This may help all of us to give a single answer.

I also understand Conroe's reasoning, as it does make sense. Also, how does it look on generating more great prophets? Will they come very fast? Definitely a factor, so we'll need to speed up gpp.
