MGI - Isolationist

4000 BC // Turn 1
The small french tribe under the leadership of "Michel le craintif" settle on the boards of the Seine and found the great city of Paris, which at the time only consisted out of 10 small huts, but nevertheless...
Michel commanded to explore the immediate area, and so they found wheat and from this time onwards, the French baked baguettes and all were full of joy. Michel's troops also discovered some strange animals, they were small and lived in and around the Seine. They weren't optimal to eat - much too small - , but their skin was agreable, but the wheat was more interesting at first for Michel.
Now that the French had stopped being nomads, some of their men had time for their own, and it wasn't for long that they found some glittering stones around Paris and thought of what they could to with this.
But as they feared their unkown neighbours, they first wanted to be able to defend themselves and thus started building a barrack, but they wondered at first what the building's use could be.

3950 - 3750 BC // Turns 2 - 6
Time went on, and the French under Michel le craintif had already cultivated the wheat and their baguettes became better and better. Paris prospered and already had around 30 000 inhabitants.

3700 BC // Turn 7
Michel le craintif decided to build a road to the strange animals to explore them.

3650 - 3500 BC // Turns 8 - 11
Paris grew and grew and up to nearly 60'000 inhabitants, Michel was happy looking from his 'better' hut onto the city and always said 'Ma ville, ma ville'.
In this year, people from outwards had come and admired the city, they wanted to live in Paris, and so the villages they came from also joined the French. Michel now reigned a territory 21-times the size of Paris.

3450 - 3350 BC // Turns 12 -14
This time was later known as the good century. But at the end of it, the plague strook the city, and a third of the people (about 20'000 humans) died of it.

3300 BC // Turn 15
The next 50 years, the plague strook again and again, another 15'000 people died. Michel lost his wife, and four of his five sons. He was sad.

3250 BC // Turn 16
After this tragedy, good news came again. Michel's last son Louis had completed the road to the strange animals they now called 'beavers'. The whole city of Paris was in joy and Michel had to spend less for happiness.
It was also in this year they had completed the barack and now they knew what they would use it for: The shiny glittery stones, they could use to make tools, and now they thought, they could use them too for hunering weapons, they wanted to have lances, but they had to wait cause the metal was still a little bit too soft.

3200 - 3100 BC // Turns 17 - 19
The French now finally knew how to treat the metal they called bronze and in the moment began to build spearmen. Michel also wanted a way to let his sons and daughters know what he had done, because he was an old person now and told his wisemen to research a way for writing things down.

3050 BC // Turn 20
But Michel le craintif would not be able to see this. He died at the age of 970 years, he was a 'vrai' Methusalem. His son louis died a few days later while hunting, so there was only one men to continue Michel's legacy, his grandson ...

Next: Rowandlife
Time: 72 hours
Turns: 10 turns are ok I think (I did 20 to begin, but if the team wants we can also do 20, although I prefer 10)
Remarks: You do not have to write an account like I did (I'm not sure if I'll do it this way for all the turnlogs), but you surely can if you want to (if you really really want... ).

save:save MGI-French Isolationists 3050 BC

I think the start was pretty good, it's not that surprising that we didn't meet anyone. I decided to go for a barracks because we cannot build a temple yet and I didn't want a settler because that would be opposite to our variant, we will not let our men wander alone in the big big world without defence.
In one picture, you see that there is a goody hut, and if you want to pop it without having a spearmen, do so, (but remember, we cannot leave our border).

Got it, and will plan on playing late tonight.

Sieg, since I won't have time to get the settler out w/escort for my own turns, start thinking of where you'd want him to go. I'm thinking SE of the lake to the SE, so as to grab the BG and wheat after expansion, or on the river to the W to grab the game.

Any input from the team on research objectives?

what I usually do is trying to get philosophy asap, since we won't meet new people quickly and when we meet one we should try to trade for whatever we get (military techs only!). Bronce working should be the only military tech we researched (to be able to do produce an escort).
Settlement places: Either follow the Seine to the Sea or go to the lake. ;)

I have a couple of questions about the variant.

  1. Can we sell non-military techs?
  2. What about acquiring non-military techs which are pre-requisistes for military techs? Take Chemistry for example, it is required to get to Metallurgy.

as above: military tech = every tech that gives a unit (so bronce-working is one, chemistry not!). And as we can trade only with military techs, trade is not allowed with non-military ones. So, NO, we can't sell them.

These expose more BGs near the lake, blocking our ideal settling there

Berge to Paris, Arne NE-N-W

2590 – 10
Anne mines, Berge rests, Arne E

SitRep:
Paris @ 4, settler due in 1, grow in 8
Take settler to the tile SE of the game, on the same bank of the Seine. Distance 3 is easily supportable, and permits ideal road moves early on. Roading to it across the plains will be quickest, and also strengthen the road net to SE to found near lake. We’ll have to settle SE of the lake on the BG to grab the coast, 1 wheat, 2 BG and a forest. SW of game would be OK too, and grab coast, but would be harder to support.

Allow Anne to finish mine on wheat to offer MM flexibility to boost shields at times, while keeping food above shortage level. I couldn’t MM during my turns because we needed the food from the FP.

Science currently at writing in 14 @ -1gpt, with 16g. We won’t make it all the way due to unit support, but it will be faster than staying at 18 turns @ +1gpt.

Paris will easily kick into expansion mode after this, with perfect timing for a settler pair.

Enjoy!

Hmm... strange. I don't know why the date is 2590 bc instead of 2500, but I guess I'll look at the save later to figure that out.

OK, wow, our land is great. With two wheats and a lux, our capital will be a settler making giant. However, after reading both posts I can't tell if we have pottery. If we DO have pottery, a granary should be our top priority right now more than anything else. BTW, I also agree with the dot map, our lands will be filled out quickly at this rate.

We do not have pottery yet.

Actually, we don't need a granary. Paris is well capable of putting out spear / settler pairs just as it hits 4, and drops to 2 on a continuous basis. The thing that we need is shields (see note on MMing in my post). As such, I recommend the lake site as higher priority than the game site (make that 3rd city). The lake site gets very good shields.

Remember to keep research fairly high, so as to reach philosophy first, and grab literature.

Got it. Will try to work on it tonight.

EDIT: Had some time, so...

2550 BC: Settler popped from Paris. Paris set to spearman. Settler moves SE towards lake spot, Arne moved to escort settler.

2510 BC & 2470 BC: Settler and Arne move to lake spot, nothing else.

2430 BC: Orleans founded on Lake spot, set to build worker. Anne moves to build road to Orleans.

2390 BC & 2350 BC: Nothing, really.

2310 BC: Spearman popped, named 'Phillippe'. Paris set to settler. Anne begins irrigating wheat next to Orleans. Phillipe moves towards the game area, but stays in French territory.

2270 & 2230 BC: Nothing, again.

2190 BC: Anne finishes, moves to build road towards third city site (near game)

DaveShack is UP
Cizzlewalk is On Deck

I PM'ed Sieg. Hopefully he can repost soon. At what point do we just have DaveShack replay it?

Well, since we've been waiting for so long, we surely can wait another few hours (btw. at the moment, it's half past 8 here, so yes, it's evening for me and I had to realize first that you are probably still working/at school? :)

2150 BC Orleans worker->spear; worker named Marie and moves to help Anne

2110 BC slider down to 80% writing stays in 2

2070 BC Paris pops settler, starts on spear.

2030 BC slider down to 30%, writing in 1, +5gpt

1990 BC writing done, start on CoL, 34 turns

1950 BC Lyons founded SE of game. Sci up to 90%, CoL in 20

1870 BC Paris spearman (Claude) -> Settler

Remainder: positioning workers, MMing

Settler is due in 3, CoL in 15.

A screen would be nice though. Hmm, CoL is good, but I'm a bit sad we've met noone yet. Conclusion, we are either on a continent/land mass with few to none civs or/and there are no expansionist civs around here.

Cizzlewalk up, let's get this thing moving fast.

Got it. I'll get this done within an hour.
