MIC1 - The Commercial Research Hater

Finished 6 turns and no major news. Cash and builds. Looking to gets Shakes. Have to finish up later. Finished them off.

MIC01-1050AD
Preturn – Decide that with this cash burning a hole in my pocket to rush almost everything but factories and cav builds. This drops us to a paltry $11K in the kitty. I may end up rushing some of the factories too. I mm a couple things to get a factory in Pisae in 3 at 50spt. A bank in Brundisium in 4 from 7.

IT – The Japanese may be up to something again. They pull 2 caravels and 4 frigates right next to Burdigala.

[1] 1060 – Cash increases about 20gpt from all the courts and a couple banks. +517gpt. I deal nationalism to the Maya to help keep them from being exterminated. Get 16gpt +some change. +533gpt. Rush the factory in Pisae and Antium for around 600g, bank in Brundisium for 100g and continue railing. Upgrade a couple buckets to cannon and pull some cannons and armies down to Burdigala. Sold the granary in Rome. Will Japan declare?

IT – No they just cruise by. Settler in Selucia to go to double fish in empty Chinese border spot.

[2] 1070 - See that Eboracum can be productive using the hills at zero growth. I think I’ll farm some workers out of less productive areas to grow. Rail-net nearly complete. Rush a couple of small items. Rush the factory in Rome. 10072g at 537gpt. No new techs from the gang of 3.

IT – Japanese start Shakes. Which wouldn’t be a bad wonder either. They sure enjoy the shortcut across Burdigala.

[3] 1080 – Railnet is complete except for Alesia and Gergovia. Take a look at the Shakes build and he has it in a 4shield town due in 79. He wants 1440 for it but we can get it better at 2nd and then have one of our factory/coal plant cities knock it out for us.

IT – Jerusalum starts another Frigate. We may need a few of these.

[4] 1090 – Germany has free artistry and price is ~1100g. Veii’s new factory puts it at 45spt. A coal plant won’t get cavs any quicker so I go for a quick worker and will then 2-turn cavs. Pisae’s new coal plant gets it to 78spt with a mountain being mined. It will wonder or 1-turn cavs.

IT – A few advisors asking to swap to aqueducts.

[5] 1100 – Pisae’s mine gets some help and decides to 1-turn cavs. I rush the coal plant in Antium to get on a palace build. The factory in Pompeii gets rushed because it looks like a good candidate for growth from Shakes.

IT – Pompeii’s factory finishes and will get the coal plant rushed next turn.

[6] 1110 – Roading and working.
IT – 1-turn cavs coming.

[7] 1120 – I think if we put another mountain mine near Rome we can get it to 80spt. Rush the Pompeii coal plant.

IT – Coal city riots. I’ll rush it’s market next turn. Japan declares on Maya.

[8] 1130 – 75gpt + 500g gets espionage from Germany. Espionage gets Free Artistry from China. Pisae goes to Intel Agency in 5, Pompeii to Shakes in 17 after investigating Berlin to see their build is in 21. I mm Pompeii and will mine some plains with its now surplus to guarantee the build. Berling can make some improvements to speed their’s.

IT – Not much.

[9] 1140 – After playing with the mountains around Rome I realize that it needs one more pop to clear 80spt. I swap it to shakes in 6 and Pompeii goes to palace in 31 for ToE. Ravenna is starving right now due to MM so I rush the factory there so it can get on a harbor.

IT – Our first pollution hits and America declares on the Maya.

[10] 1150 – Working still.

It looks like the Maya’s are in a dogpile. If they go down we need to help Germany out. Medicine is 13 away and we may have a shot at it. I’m a little worried about the palace prebuild at 28. Can we entice the others to research what we need by the time the palace runs out?

Preturn: we still have some clowns. Fire them.

I stop the coal plant in Cumae. We've had enough production and I'd rather avoid the pollution.

Upgrade the remaining musket.

Pisae is building IA but it could finish Universal Suffrage in 8 turns. I really want Shakespear to be in our Ironworks city, but then our capital will build Universal Suffrage in 10 turns instead of 8.

Since we are rich I just do investigation on the AI cities that are building Universal Suffrage: Bremen of Germany is a joke city shield wise so I save the money, but Kyoto is building US in 8 turns with 31spt, so we'll keep the build.

(1)1160AD: ZZZ

(2)1170AD: Japan is getting big. I think we have to prepare to interfere in case it declares on Germany.

(3)1180AD: Japan chose to research Ironclads.

IBT Japan dectroys Maya.

(4)1190AD: ZZZ

IBT Shakespear completed.

(5)1200AD: ZZZ

(6)1210AD: Japan and Germany know Medicine. We have 7 turns to go. Interesting.

Our capital is making 80spt.

With this tech pace our palace prebuild is probably going to be wasted. I switch it to IA due in 4.

IBT Praviteer attacks our galleons, we just beat it and promote!

(7)1220AD: We buy ivory from Japan by furs+gems+4gpt.

IBT Universal Suffrage completed.

(8)1230AD: ZZZ

(9)1240AD: I sell Banking to Celts for WM+12g.

I actually think we should revolt to Democracy..for faster worker, nicer unit support, and better income.

IBT IA completed.

(10)1250AD: Japan has Corporation!

I plant a spy on China, but fail on America and Celts. I don't try Germany or Japan as we have not established solid military existence on its continent. I suggest we do not do so until we have enough forces on the other continent, or we owe gpt payment to them (like buying Corporation). I don't buy Corporation yet, as I want to pull the "buy Corporation and steal Electricity" trick (or vice versa). :)

After Medicine we can set to Sanitation. Hopefully AI is researching Electricity. We don't need to prebuild until we get Electricity.

Note: next turn we can found a city on the other continent, and there will be a frigate and a galleon in Tolosa (NE coast) to ship more reinforcement. We have an empty army, so I suggest we send the army with 3 rifles there, and form a rifle army. We should rush the following improvements in the new city: wall, rax, harbor, temple. This way the city will be pretty safe. Then we should keep shipping cavs/rifles over there so we could do something in case Japan tries to dominate the continent.

Some important turns.

1265: We learn Medicine. Now Germany also has corporation. They are willing to give it to us for Iron, World Map and 1700 G. I do the trade. We need to perk up Germany in relation to Japan. The CHinese have electricity but they do not have Medicine or Corporation.

1270 AD: We are strong compared to China. There is no fear of war from them. Plus we have a spy with them. So I am going to try to steal Electricity from them cheaply. I fail. :( No matter I will try again next time.

1275 AD: This time I succeed. :) We take Electricity. I am going to hold on to that one till either Japan or Germany gets another tech.

1290 AD: Now everybody has electricity. Hmmm... Maybe I should have sold it. But even then I was not really getting mucho dollar for it. So there was no point.

1300 AD: We finish Wall Street in Rome.

Our foothold in Jap continent is secure. The city is named Hippo. It has a rax and a temple and a library (for extra culture expansion). It has already culture expanded once. It also has a harbor. It is currently guraded by a 4 rfile army. Some cavs are on its way there. Galleons are going back and forth from there to are nearest harbor.

Stock exchanges in core cities are complete.

Japs have refining. There is no immediate need for us to get this tech.

We can easily steal from China with the spy when they have a new tech (remember spy has a greater chance of success).

Aggie - up
Gozpel - on deck

Aggie you can take your time. I think gozpel cannot play until this weekend so you have two days..

Let's also rush a wall in Hippo..

Also indeed we don't have to steal a tech as soon as it appears. We should try to sell it around to speed up the tech pace.

EDIT: We probably should get a ToE prebuild going now?

Early: I plant a spy in Japan for 98 gold and continue the transportation of troops to our beachhead.

Middle: I'm starting to worry about the ToE prebuild that I started in Pisae. Our lux deal with Germany is getting more expensive. We have to pay 17 gpt more.
I tried two steal attempt after noticing that Japan has Replaceable Parts. The first fails (but we got away) and the 2nd succeeds. Total costs: 5400 gold. Sadly I can't get another good deal with this tech.
We have two sources of rubber, Japan has none.

End: Well, it looks like the prebuild is going to fail. I guess that we have to build an expensive infantry unit in Pisae and start again :p

1350 AD save

Just had a quick look at the save and thought we could starve Pisae for a few turns to see if Japan comes up with it. If we get it we want AT and Radio right. Also, are we going to war with Japan to knock them back a few pegs? If so, cavs vs. inf?, or wait for tanks? Either way we will want a lot of arty/bombers.

True, but we can also start another prebuild while doing this?

I think you mean "Electronics".

Also, are we going to war with Japan to knock them back a few pegs? If so, cavs vs. inf?, or wait for tanks? Either way we will want a lot of arty/bombers.

I suggest no war before Modern Ages. We can prepare for it of course. Start moving troops over there wouldn't hurt.

Japan has no rubber, meaning no infs. But I wouldn't go to war, since Japan is only as big as we are. Far from a domination limit, thus far from the need to slow them down. In fact, why not let them research for us? I would send more troops though, in case a steal attempt fails and results into war. I would also continue building culture improvements there.

Somehow I missed this part:

1265: We learn Medicine. Now Germany also has corporation. They are willing to give it to us for Iron, World Map and 1700 G. I do the trade. We need to perk up Germany in relation to Japan. The Chinese have electricity but they do not have Medicine or Corporation.

Now I think I have to disagree with the steal. I would have traded for Electricity by Medicine and Corporation.

Note we are going for a Space race, and there is no runaway AI, so I don't see the point of spending more money in stealing when we could have just traded for it. We actually want China to catch up to compete with Japan in research. If all AIs can do useful research we'd have much better brokering opportunities.

Stealing is OK, but keep the space race goal in mind.

Also, I would like to see us paying more gpt than lumsum. There are three major benefit:
1. speed up AI research.
2. keep them in peace with us until Modern Ages.
3. if steal fails and they declare, we can get the money back.

In Modern Ages techs are much more expensive so we could do more stealing, but in the IA we can certainly afford buying techs. I want to see at least mixture of buying and stealing.

You are right a trade would have been better and I would have done that if I could. ;) But China wanted, Medicine, Corporation, saltpeter and 7800 G for Electricity. I thought that was a wee too much.

Hence the steal.

7800g is way too much. They would cash rush a lot of units with that. But the strategy we seem to be in agreement on. Try to help China and Germany research while bringing Japan back into line.
If and when we go to war should we try to get Abe back into the game by slicing off a piece of Japan for him and gifting Abe up to the current AI tech level?

Forget Abe. He is hopeless.

As long as Japan isn't running away we are fine. It could lead by one tech or two, not problem, and that would give us benefit in reselling the techs. I wouldn't slow Japan down this way. The faster it gets to Modern Ages the better as long as we have the control (that's why we need troops standing by).

Last time I checked Germany was doing quite fine. With its free tech it will not fall behind and we can use it quite nicely.

I agree 7800g was quite a lot. On the other hand two steals were also not that much cheaper either. Hard to say.
