Got it thank you
Not true, I have had several cities that had all 7 religions.
The Gift function gives your unit (not just the missionary) to the player/AI. The Gift function is good for missionary because the AI/player chooses which city to spread the religon.
So... how/where does one mod/change/alter these probabilities (for spread success)? Essentially, I want success every time success is even remotely possible (that is always, except for when the city's owner's religion civic is set to Theocracy). These possibilities are just stupid in my opinion. I don't see Civ as a simulator, for me it's a strategy game and thus for me this is just an additional source for annoyance that doesn't add anything good to the game at all.
(And yes, my list of changes thus far is quite considerable.)
It has to do with % chance. The more religions the city has, the less likelyhood of it adopting the new religion. Just keep plugging and eventually it will spread.
The % chance of a missionary suceeding is 100% in a city without any religions. This is reduced by approximately 9% per additional religion if it is on your team (your own city, vassal or colony) and 12% if foreign. So it is a 91% chance for your missionary to introduce a second religion into your own cities, and then 82% for the third religion and so on. It would be an 88% chance of introducing a second religion into a hostile city (perhaps to help espionage costs). These chances are not dependent on anything (city size, open borders etc.) except number of religions already in the target city and whether the target is on your team and whether Theocracy is in effect.
ah- the glory of automation strikes.
If you automate your Missionaries i noticed they fail rarely- if at all- in spreading religion to your cities.
Yes, but how do we fix this? How do we set success rate at 100%? For every religion? (In your own cities?)
Under organized religion you can build missionaries without monasteries. So, why is it they then fail when spreading religion to your own cities? It seems to me that it should be automatic. A mod for this would be great. Besides video lockups, missionary failure is the game's most annoying "feature".
Can you gift a missionary to the AI and have them spread it for you?
Religion spreads automatically along trade routes. But randomly, so you can just have bad luck and need to use missionaries. There is also a random element, but I am not sure if a missonary can fail to "convert" a city that had no other religion present.
Missionaries built under OR have the same chance of failing as those built under other religious civics--none when trying to add a religion to a city without, and an increasing chance of failure as the target city gets more religions.
Yes; classic way of getting your religion into a civ that's in Theocracy.
Religion auto-spread will only convert cities that have no religion; to get the 2nd-7th religion into a city, one must use missionaries.
Yes, I know that religions spread automatically only to the "pagan" cities, but I wonder if there really is a fail chance for a missionary in a pagan city without any religion? The mission chance depends on how many religions are already present and some other things, of course.
This feels like a "Civ4 General Discussion" topic, rather than a "Civ4 Strategy and Tips" topic.
If this thread were moved there, you might get more responses from the folks who only visit that section. If a Mod agrees, maybe they will help you out here.
No chance for failure with a city w/o religion (ie, pagan).
I've played a fair number of culture games and for me the tipping point is the fourth religion. That's the point where it becomes difficult, any failures before that are just unlucky. On the fourth its not unknown to fail to spread up to (and possibly beyond) six times in a row in the same city. When you're rushing a cultural victory for HoF it's pretty annoying.
Sometimes I wonder if there is some sort of holocaust random event. I had one city reject 7 straight Jewish missionaries.
That's kinda wrong... but still funny.
Heh that's funny I get a lot of Judaism rejections too. Perhaps something to do with the fact that the Jewish religion is the first one in the games cached list?
