Wow, my old saves are getting a workout since there seems to be so much I'm unclear on. The answer is disbands and forest chops do not speed spaceship parts. Engineers and policemen do work to help build them just like wonders, though.

If we have a problem with unit support then Free and Saber who probably have about 4-5 times the number of units have an even bigger drag on research.

I'm far from a MM expert, but I think this statement misses a crucial difference between The Council, Saber, and Free. Saber and Free have specialist farms sprawling over other continents. We don't. They have lower unit support from the extra towns, and more scientists to boot.

It's unsafe to assume that we can remain in the tech lead forever.

Their extra unit support might evolve to some 100 towns per continent.
That's 100 extra units for free or would be a mere 200gpt ~= 300bpt for us extra effort.

The Scientist farms won't come into real effect before all is irrigated and railroaded.
20 turns for FREE and 40 turns for SABER I'd guesstimate.

Unless they steal all techs from us or found a tech alliance, we should be able to maintain our tech lead...
But the margin might shrink...
