[MOD] NEW BALANCE for Warlords (was slower tech + other changes mod)

I searched & seached, couldnt find the resources.xml file : /. Keep in mind I have no modding/coding knowledge whatsoever plz. Looked in the mod's zip file, didnt see a file called resources.xml, looked in everything under the warlord file on my HD, nothing. Is it a seperate section or few lines of code under a different file that I need to be looking for? Frustration is setting in.... : /

Havent seen a post from Dearmad since i been back. Immacolata if you have any idea what or where this file would be or what I need to do, plz let me know, you seem like you havea fair amount of coding knowledge yourself from what ive read, or if any1 else knows where to find this Id aprreaciate it, thanx.

Took a day off from work & its raining its ass off here on the east coast, perfect day for civving but I really want to fix this b4 I get in2 a new game. thx again in advance 4 ne help

Civ4Bonusinfo or something like that. it is in terrain folder I think.

Questions for you all.

What would you think if the viking's got a new UU. If I made their galley a unique unit with a 5% bombard. Now, don't go all freaky on me yet... here's my reasoning. It's not the guns bombarding the city, but the very reputation that "the VIKINGS are coming!" and it allows them to own the coast a bit more. Also note it would be the galley, not the trireme...

It's a thought I had while playing and I encountered them and thought... hm, no real fear from them.

Yes I agree. There should be something that makes vikings more feared and ferocious.

I also have one question, are you going to add any new units to this mod?

It is worth a try, perhaps. Go for it.

I never personally have the Vikings in my game & know nothing of there original UUs, so from a neutral point of view I think its a fairly good idea. So, nething with extra city attack or a ship with bombard is the way to go.....or if possible a unit that pillages extra gold from improvements....

Ok, I'll add it in. They will still have their other UU (the beserker). I think they couldstand to have a little somethinge xtra is all. Nothing too powerful.

mikkeman. I don't really plan to add in any units other than all the vanity units I added in to help different cultures look different. They have the same stats as the original units, and are just a graphical changes (like the chinese dragon boat).

Dearmad, first off nice work, one problem though, I like how you have changed winery to pottery, however you still do not get the bonus for it(+1 happiness) until monarchy, you can build the winery but you will not get the bonus until monarchy I figure you would want to fix that because obviously you moved it for a reason.again nice work.

P.S.-Warlords in your signature is spelled wrong.

Actually I think that it was quite neat feature. Sort of 2 fold bonus. You get extra commerce right a way, but have to wait a bit for happines bonus.

The winery error if you wanna call it that Ive noticed from day one, I just assumed Dearmad did it on purpose.

Thanks for the path to the file, once I deleted it everything went back to normal for me, still not seeing many whales but o well, Im sure its just something dumb & random.

What is the other file, above Bonus.info, Improvement Infos? Is that mainly for the addition of Tundra/desert combat bonuses? Just trying to understand more is all.

The warlords edition of Dale's Combat Mod is out now. I am going to check it out. It is probably not compatible with yours, but I want to see what this stack combat is all about.

[EDIT] Hmm, I think they could be merged with no big problem. Dale encourages that anyways. Seems there are not a lot, if any, xml files that overlap. You do have to make a few modifications to the units, but otherwise, I think they can coexist peacefully.

Dearmad could you please reduce unit size a bit. I think units are now a bit too big compared to terrain.

Mikkeman:

Heres something I found just yesterday, its called CivScale. I need it for the text scaling feature becuz Im running the game in 1728x920 reslolution to an HDTV so the vanilla text is nearly unreadable but it also scales units, buildings, improvements & alot more. It also lets you modify the clouds that you see when you zoom out, which can be a performance boost to some.

Newayz, its a standalone utility & doesnt need to be loaded by Civ4, just an exe. file. I personally wouldnt play another game w/o it & its gotten alot of downloads so give it a try. Heres a link to the forum & theres a download link on the 1st page....

Hope this helps every1.

I noticed this problem with the mod and fixed it:

Changed BonusInfo.xml under wine to read techtradeenabled with TECH_POTTERY instead of TECH_MONARCHY.

This is a great mod, Dearmad -- I use it as the basis of my own mod. I'm very pleased that you adopted the non-state religions causing unhappiness concept, as this is something I always incorporate in my personal mods. The flavor units are very cool, too, and as soon as I tweak your latest version to suit my needs, I'll be using them too!

Thanks Subaru WrXxX, civscale works like a dream. Only bad thing about it is that it doesnt work with mods that have tampered with scaling. But it works with New Balance :D

I am interested in your comments about jungles and civilizations. There are some very important revisions to the traditional picture of jungles. Check out the book '1491' for a description. The gist of it is that there were large (100,000 plus) cities in the Amazon jungle basin before the coming of Europeans. (First travelers recorded existence of cites, but the cities died off due to disease before next set of explorers traveled in) Recent archeology shows the cities were there... Apparently the Civs had agriculture technologies to exploit the jungle. The technologies have been LOST... (Something Civ4 does not suggest)

You are right that the Europeans did not have the immune system to deal with tropical and sub tropical disease. Just as the New Worlders did not have the immune system to handle animal diseases that Europeans had developed immunity. (see J. Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel)

Major civs in N. American MidWest, NorthEast died off on contact with Europeans.... Not because of war, because of disease....

So, what does this mean for your mod.... yes, I agree that jungle cut down happens too fast. I agree that jungle can be utilized w/o cutting. I do not agree that ALL civs in jungles were failures, because they were in jungles. The diseases that got them were European diseases.

If anything, there should be special techs for special circumstances. Or the techs should be easier to unlock if a civ has certain starting location.

How about this idea.... civs need certain types of resource in fat cross to unlock certain techs -- AH is obvious, Fishing needs coast, Mining needs hills or mining resource, masonry need stone, etc.
There need to be more AG techs, pasture AG, forest AG, and jungle AG. See Diamond's book for a discussion of this issue.

This makes the game more difficult, slower in the earlier period and probably unbalances it.... but tell that to the Mayans...

Just a set of ideas, your mileage may vary....
please take my comments as positive, I have great respect for your thinking on these issues.... yes, the Europeans were devastated by tropical disease and you are right, from the traditional history we have been taught... but that traditional view of history has changed since I was in school!
regards...

I'm up to 1100 or so on my first new balance prince game, and enjoying it a lot. The pace is really nice!

I'm on some kind of random shaped standard world, and randomized to get Brennus and the Celts, and I managed to wipe out the English with my hordes of Gallic Warriors, Axemen and Chariots. Now I'm deciding what to do with my Jewish Japanese and Egyptian brothers and sisters down south on the same land mass - but cut off by a peak on the isthmus. No cottages early caused me some financial issues that I'm just now overcoming - but I was pounding out the troops for the war effort.

Can't wait to get home from work and continue...
