@Yavrim. The hypsapist isnt a great defensive unit, but coupled with many many archers, walls, castles (research construction early), and you are quite safe. I do like the cooperation bonuses, and hypsapists and archers make a credible team. Course there is a second road that can be taken. Once heavilly defended get a hold of some ivory (there has to be some resources your civ has) and march forth with an army of elephants archers and hypsapists. Not the best, but good enough to get a few cities. Cities with horses and iron! Huzzah!

But the incorporation of the mercenary element means you dont even need to have resources to get great units.

Hi Anaztszioch,

Yes your quite right, ancient Greece was a number of independant city-states, and I thought I did actually say that. Civ 4 refers to the greek city states as just Greece, but yes, to be accurate, the Hellenes/Hellada is correct(I am Greek myself, hence my interest in this topic).

Regarding the Hoplite/Phalanx issue, I was under the impression the Hoplite was a heavily armed unit, not a light infantry unit, and I did a quick search regarding them. This is what I found:

"The characteristic style of Greek warfare was the close hand-to-hand struggle and tight formations of heavy infantry called a phalanx. It was these heavily armed fighters, known as Hoplites, who fought either in the armies of their own cities or as mercenaries in foreign service . It is at first sight surprising that the steep mountains of Greece should have produced warriors who were only fully effective in formation on relatively level ground, but the level corn plain was vital to the city’s existence, and the purpose of these armies was to dominate that territory, and either protect or devastate it. "

Quoted from www.hoplites.co.uk/html/hoplites.html

Hi Los Tirano,
yeh Hyapist isnt great by themselves but behind city walls should be able to defend against axemen/swordsmen well enough to keep them at bay..

That looks pretty compelling. I'm all for renaming Phalanx into Hoplite

On another note, to address the lack of iron/ bronze, how about adding the crude spearman with the discovery of hunting and putting the real spearman forward to bronzeworking. Early man did use spears of wood and flint, and while they would not be as good as a bronze spear, they would be more effective than sticks (warrior)

anyone expiriencing problems with the interface ? (it doesnt refresh, sometimes city screen stays after exiting the city, etc..)

Ok, I have asked this in the Pirate Island mod, but nobody answered. Has anyone put any thought into making it so that you can play as the pirates?

WarKirby -

Crude spearman, well wooden spear its self isnt good.
But there is African warrior, Skirmisher and Immortal. They use javanelins, but so does Phalanx. Spear it self is made to be two-handned. Anyway there should be a "crude spearman" whith wooden spear and he should be:

Strength: 3
Movement: 3
Hammer Cost: 80% of Archers
Bonuses: 1 strike against mounted (if possible)
immune to 1st strike vs mounted (if possible)
+67% defance vs mounted (to make their strength above chariots)
+34% attack vs mounted (to make their strength same as chariots)
+20% city defence
-60% vs melee (well they got only wooden heavy spears)
-80% vs archery (heavy spears mean slow movement, easy target)
-99% vs gunpowder (same as archers)
+250% vs armored
+250% vs armored
+250% vs armored (for fun:P)

Yavrim -

Yes u may find that.
But im from Poland, and i found that our heavy cavallary in Grunevald battle (1410 ad vs Teutonic order as it is called in english i belive) was called Heavy Hussar !!! We didnt have heavy cavalary, we attacked mostly whith no armored units. And we sloughtered those metal cans mostly due to large number of army as we had Polish, Litvians and !Tatars!.

Our Hussars (not Heavy Hussars goddamn) were actually made for our fight against Turks(ottoman empire) and Tatars in later ages, when we had rescue of Wieden in Austia under lead of Jan Sobieski. And the thing our Hussars was called Hussars not Knight, was an idea of our nobles who were actually Hussars them selves. Our UU to say, had big wings on their back making very loud noice, witch made commanders oders die in air. This way our not good tactical army, but well armed was so strong, as enemies was loosing their commander oders and loosing their tactics.

So find some more "prroves", as i still dont think Phalanx and Hoplite were same unit. But Athens usually hired Spartan warriors, so they Were mercenaries, and that makes think of Phalanx and Hoplit same unit... Greece is crazy to say elast :P

Hi Guys,

I am back. Damn, every time I am on vacation some **** happens in London. Well I made it back. The team has worked great so far and surprisingly much more is done for the coming patch than I thought.

Mexico alone implemented roger bacon flying mod 2.0 (flying mod, dale's range bombardment, mad nuke, missile, revolution mod, auto ai play). All credits going to him. We still need more testing though.

The conversion to Warlords are going excellent as well.

The plan is the following
- Release of Patch TR 2.1.0 for Vanilla Civ4 for the coming weekend (Hopefully) This will be the last TR patch for Vanilla Civ4
- Release of Warlord TR sometime in 3-4 weeks from now
- We will move from this thread here to the Total Realism Project site (which is also located on the Civfanatics, but not yet public)

I haven't read most of the posts since my last post, but it seems I have pissed off someone with my signature. I am sorry about that, since my intention is to make people to think! During my studies in USA I realized that 2/3 of the American students I met had very limited to no knowledge at all about the world outside their constitution. Most of them were thinking in a way of black and white; Star Wars or Lord of The Rings way, good vs Evil.

I remember how happy my room mate was when he was reporting to his mom "Mom we got the bastard!". For a second I was thinking he is talking about me, as his German/Iranian room mate. :D But no he was talking about the capture of Saddam Hussein. I was just looking at him, shaking my head with a tired smile on my face.

His president didn't tell him on Fox News that America and all western nations were selling all sort of conventional weapons, missiles and even bio/chemical warheads - through which I lost one of my cousins - to Saddam Hussein in his 8 years war against Iran. Now that the ex-vassal was a thorn in the western eyes he needed to be removed. And the weapons that he paid once for needed to be destroyed...certainly without a refund.

I don't blame these American Students I met. They are victims of US media like FoxNews. I remember very well how amusing the 20:00 FoxNews was in the canteen. 15 min report about Football, then 10 min report about baseball. Commercial break, 30 seconds about events in Iraq Invasion (2003/4) - naturally only action scenes how the good Americans are winning the war against the Orcs. Aehmm I mean the rebels, oh no rebels were good in Star Wars, aeehmmm I meant the insurgents. Then a report about weather and Basketball. That was it. :D how the hell shall a student get his world education in there - such as not everything is black and white but there is always a shade of grey?

Anyway because of recent events I felt my signature needed to be extended by three more links. Feel free to watch them or not.

Sorry now back to the topic again. I just felt that needed to be said. ;)

Cheers
Houmie

You do not know anything about the war. Sorry, but you have to be there to believe it.
Don't show those pictures in your signature unless you show the pictures from the other side too.

Sorry about London, I can imagine how hellish it was getting home.

Anyways, the last time I downloaded this mod, everything worked well except for the fact that when you switch to the mod, the Civ 4 "Loading" screen comes up immediately, but then it takes 5 minutes for the "Loading XML" and that stuff screen to come up.

Anyway to fix this?

I have been in the war. I lived in Iran as child when the Iraqi bombers visited us many nights in the week. I know how it feels!!! The sound of red alert, the splashing of windows, everything is still in my mind. Dont worry!

Yet there is no comparison of the destruction that is being brought by few backwarded unaimed Hizbollah-Missiles and the systematic destruction of South Lebanon by Israel. Watch my link nr two from Chompsky. And all that for building a US Base in North Libanon for Step 2 - Invading Syria.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel anything for the Hizbollah. These bastards are repressing the Iranian Democratic movement since almost 10 years. I hope I would see the day when Iran is truly free. However you cannot kill a whole population for few fanatics between. This is genocide!

Hmmm this is weird. Are you saying the game freezes and nothing happens? Or does it just take that long? If it takes that long it is because the game is indexing the XMl files in the Cache folder. Once this is done the next time the game will be started much much faster. However if you play between the sessions a different mod, the cache will be overridden and the TR Cache needs to be indexed again. :( I hope that helps. What is your system Spec?

Cheers
