NOTE: I HAVE VERY LITTLE MODDING EXPERIENCE AND THIS MAY NEVER BE BALANCED/PLAYABLE

Chungus with ice.png

Thanks to Leoreth's help, I have been able to open my Chungus Earth map (102x186, 1.5x the edge length of of Rhye's original map) in DoC. I've always wanted to be able to mod, and since Leoreth has vastly improved the way DoC is coded, I'm going to try and learn modding by porting DoC over to this map.

Crucially, this map has enough space so that all 4 provinces of Ireland can be represented by a city. Galway for Connacht, Dublin for Leinster, Belfast for Ulster, and Cork for Munster.

I attached the RFC_Earth.txt if you want to open this up in DoC. You can also open it in the Cross Overhaul. I haven't done anything with spawn locations or city maps, so it's not really playable. For example, Egypt spawns in West Africa.

Seeing the big map getting bigger is honestly scary. I wonder if this would cause performance issues, if it were ever implemented.

Indonesia is somewhat deformed, there is too much gap between Java and Bali / Lesser Nusa islands. The Nusa Islands also shouldn't be stretched North, there aren't many big islands there anyway. Hell, I won't argue with keeping the islands just 1 tile wide.

And the Oceania looks so crowded? Maybe the region had been like this in the mod and i just don't realize it.

Anyway it's a gorgeous work!

Leoreth said years ago that anything more then 1.5x the side length of Rhye's map would cause performance issues. This is exactly 1.5x the side length of Rhye's map.

I created Indonesia by putting a grid over a real map of it

It has the same islands as the DoC map
Anyway it's a gorgeous work!
Thank you!

Just from looking at the map screenshot, I'll share my feedback.

I think the world isn't arid enough... Spain, Anatolia, Patagonia, and inner South Africa/Botswana all look too lush (or at least need more semidesert and/or steppe and less plains).

Northwestern Iran + Armenia/Azerbaijan is too open and spacious. More peaks needed in North Africa too. In fact I think more peaks are needed just about everywhere, to create more interesting geography and obstacles for movement.

I think the steppe terrain disappeared? I can't tell if it's there or not. I think the steppe terrain is vital to creating land that's less fertile than even normal plains without being un-farmable like semidesert.

Iirc - in Bautos42's original map thread, it was more like maps with > 15,000 tiles. For reference, the current big map is 150x80 = 12,000, while GEM is 210x90 = 18,900.

I'd also like to ask why you decided to use the original smaller map as the basis. I personally think the current big map has better proportions shapes, so if I want the map enlarged further, I would base from there.

Also - Please share with us how you did all of this and how long it took you! Great job on this. I've been wanting to experiment with a 160x90 version as well, as well as a 190x100 (just 72 tiles bigger than this), but I still don't have enough energy to do it. Great work! :)

I put a 102x186 grid over a screenshot of the current big DoC map and used it to make this.

I added the same peaks that are in the current map. I don't want to add more. The entire reason for creating this was for more space, I don't want to add extra useless peak tiles.

Steppe is still there and used everywhere it is on the current DoC map.

"not larger than x1.5 the edge length of the current [i.e. base RFC] map (anything more would exceed performance constraints)" - Leoreth

I didn't. I used 1.5 the edge length of the original map as the basis, but overlaid the grid on the current big map to create my map.

It seems we have fundamentally opposed ideas about map design, so I'll just bow out here and say nothing more.

UPDATE: I'm going to be waiting until 1.18 is released to merge my map into it
But I am working on city names in the meantime, here are some screenshots. I plan to use the English version of the name as the base name for the city name map (because I'm working off of Apple Maps and scans of older maps that are mostly in English and sometimes German, hoping to get cities that were historically important as opposed to major modern cities that rose to prominence more recently), and add local translations in later.
