Hi guys, I hope opening up a thread for this question is fine, but I did not find where to tap into your knowledge about this...
My Little One started to be interested in C3C, and he especially demands me to find something with dinosaurs for him. What I found so far did not please him:
-the Dino Barbs Scenario in the PTW Expansion pack...
-TETurkhan´s Test of Time Scenario
because he wants to build the dinos himself.
Does anyone know a mod or a Scenario that allows that Feature?
thx...

Two questions -

How old is he?

What does he mean by "build the dinosaurs himself"?

At 5 years old PinkMothra07 made resources in collaboration with Gojira54 - a Halloween set & another for Thanksgiving.

Resources or other static files - cities for example - would be relatively simple to make. Read the Halloween thread to see what they did. Creating units is very complex.

If what he wants is a scenario where the tech research lets him build dinosaur units then afaik no such scenario exists. A Relatively simple one could probably be made by adapting another scenario - changing names, unit files, etc.

EDIT: Tracking down a couple of ideas I vaguely remember being developed. May be something after all.

There is the Jurassic Park scenario - have played that one a long time ago, don't remember if the dinosaurs are a playable civ. If not it's a quick bit of editing to make them playable, although it might not be balanced or enjoyable.

Then there is the much older Dino Planet, which is only a beta.

The Cinemod - various Hollywood studios as civs - has some dinosaurs in it along with a wide variety of other things you could expect to see in movies.

So there are some other choices after all. Hopefully he'll find one of those fun to play.

thank you so much, I will try to dl them and give them a try! he is 6 years old, and so far only interested in playing and not yet developing them. ;) but this is true for today, with children nobody knows what tomorrow brings...

Godzilla - but no dinosaurs - in the Playground Mod. Still, if the thought of things like cowboys vs. giant robots vs. jets vs. whatever else is in the toy box appeals to him ...
There's a fire breathing Dimetrodon that Tom made (https://forums.civfanatics.com/attachments/lizard_lg_65v-jpg.434260/), the aforementioned Godzilla and there's dragons of various forms. But no buildable dinosaurs.

Warhammer Fantasy Mod also has the Lizardmen civ, if lizardmen are close enough to dinosaurs. (see: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/Lizardmen_UnitLine.gif )

Dinosaur Units:
Supa - Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Lambeosaurus
tom2050 - Pterosaur
Kinboat - Pterodactyls, Stegadon Rider (dinosaurs + "cavemen"* = inaccurate but fun)

Most Dino fans also enjoy Megafauna (mammals such as Mammoths)
Supa:Titanis (Terror Birds), Columbian Mammoth, Macrauchenia
tom2050: Smilodons (Sabretooth Tigers)
Plotinus: Mammoths
& giant eagles by many different unit makers

I'm certain there are others, but that's a start for any scenario maker.

* there are a ton and a half of human units that would be appropriate to a Stone Age scenario.

The description of this one reminds me of a vague idea I was thinking about a year or two back (after the 'Dinobarbs' mod failed to impress me either), but unfortunately the links appear to have died. So if anyone is willing to re-upload it, I'd be very grateful (and so would my boys!)...

Hmmm... @KayEss still seems to be active on CFC -- wonder if he's still got it, 13 years later...? I'll send him a PM...

I am working on adapting Test of Time to allow civilizations to build dinosaur units. It has a little ways to go, but I am using the Abyssinians for the starting civilization with the dinosaurs. To start with, it will require having Play the World, but I am working on porting it to Civ3 Conquests, and allowing for some auto-produced units.

timerover, a 6-year-old in Austria is desperately waiting for progress in your mod... ;)

You can make dinosaur units in Hikaro Takayama's Final Fantasy mod. Unfortunately, link is down right now, unless someone reuploaded it. I still have it on my hard drive and it it is permitted, I can reupload it myself when I'll have better connection (sometime in October).

I don't know if this will be useful or not, but I recently did a survey of prehistoric units for an idea that I had for a mod that I would have called Civolution. If anyone wants to actually make it, I also have some good charts for it. So here's the survey, by era:

on behalf of my Little One i dare to ask again for your help, guys. BM, you describe that one could easily edit a scenario so that you could actually play the barb civ yourself. i already tried to to that with the Dinobarb scenario, but did not find where to set the barb civ as playable for the human Player. please help!
thx

Barbarians cannot be turned into a normal civ; for that scenario you’ll have to choose a civilization that you want as the Dino Civ and rename it. Go to the units page and scroll through the list to unselect the human units for that civ and select the dinosaur units.
If you want, you can place the dinosaurs in the tech tree by selecting a tech for that unit.
Anything beyond that will require more planning.
Scenarios with an existing Dino Civ can be modified much more easily.

i see. but i remember that one of the Great Old Ones once played the barbarians in the Japan Scenario... and even wrote a Story about it. how did he do that then?
t_x

Most likely using the method Oni outlined.

The slot reserved for the Barbarians is a unique case. Barbarians are a civ in the sense that they are included in the list in the editor & have units assigned. But they don't research techs, engage in diplomacy, and the other sorts of things "normal" civs do. The game engine has a different way of working with them than it does with civs that are played by the AI instead of the player.

With civs that are unplayable (the player is restricted from choosing them) it's a matter of changing a setting or two to make them playable - not balanced against other civs, not necessarily capable of winning, just playable. For example: the Malucca Pirates in the Rise of the Mughals scenario are designed as a nuisance. They're not meant to be played. I edited the scenario to make them playable, added a few enhancements. Such as making a couple of already existing more advanced units available to them so it's worth spending a bit on research. They're fun, but don't have a hope of winning against the big civs. That can't be done with the Barbarians.

So in this situation Oni Ryuu is saying that it would involve making the dino units available to another civ - probably including assigning them to one or more techs - and a few other changes to make them playable. This is not as simple or as quick as making another civ playable. It probably involves spending time editing text files, etc.

for sure I remember that somebody actually played the barbarians in the Japan Scenario, not a normal civ equipped with barb Units. he could not do Research, he could not build towns but Held the camps, he could not capture or destroy but only plunder cities...
i will look the Story up, and maybe somebody knows how one can define the barbs as playable...
thanks!

Edit:
here is the game i am talking about:
