@slobberinbear
Spoiler :
All that was at the cost of any military techs/research though. And a nearly nonexistent current military which we will need before the big island can be settled because I have seen barbarians wandering around there in addition to that barbarian city.

I really wish I hadn't got that hurricane event.

But yes, lots of micromanagement there, especially the galley which had to work quintuple duty, ferrying scouts, the worker multiple times, settlers, and now one garrison troop.

I've basically given up on an attack on Saladin any time in the near future although with that large island on the other side, it may be unnecessary if we can get Settlers out there quickly enough.

@vale
Spoiler :
Munich has two unhappy faces from whipping. One will expire in two turns. The axeman arrives in two turns, removing one more unhappy face. Why would you prefer to starve the city than cap growth? At the very least, you don't need to starve the city currently.

Frankfurt is also the verge of unhappiness. But one unhappy face will expire in three turns. You could again cap growth, and still work max commerce. Why don't you?

What's with the worker building a mine that neither Frankfurt nor Hamburg can use? Is it in preparation for a third city? Because Frankfurt could use a mine on that grassland hill now.

What are your plans for the Confucian missionary in Munich? And have you considered gifting some techs to Toku so that you can open borders, start trading, building +ves, etc. He has crabs and silver to offer, and could use clams, marble and copper. I might consider gifting him Aesthetics. Once you get him to pleased, it really opens up some options as you can trade for Alphabet and then backfill off Saladin.

@nares:
Spoiler :
The mine is being built in preparation of the coming city next to it. I made a plan and didn't adjust when the hurricane changed the timing of the city. Certainly could pull him off it, and I think that grass hill mine in Frankfurts fat cross has to be a very high priority to absorb some of it's food excess/

At the start of next round I could see swapping Munich out of it's starve although it definitely is going to be working specialists frequently to avoid growth for a long time down there. I just hate unhappy faces (is there an event in vanilla BTS that destroys local improvements if you have unhappy population? There is in Fall from Heaven II and its a killer so I am a little bit overconcerned about avoiding unhappy population. As long as the fish can't get auto-pillaged, I don't see any reason to worry so much about the unhappiness once a garrison gets down there.

Frankfurt is maxing growth right? Working the clams and a flood plains? I don't see any faster growth available.

If you are talking about Hamburg, I have worked that grass hill essentially it's entire life, allowing it to slow build infrastructure while slow growing at +1 food. I don't foresee whipping out of there ever outside if an emergency so it seems reasonable to me. Slow building sucks, but this land kind of forces my hand there and 5 hammers a turn adds up eventually.

I added a bit about trading with Toku to my previous post. It is somewhat involved in your anger situation. But still, why not use the option to turn off growth if your best tile configuration pushes you past the happy cap before whip anger expires?

Frankfurt is maxing growth right? Working the clams and a flood plains? I don't see any faster growth available.
Frankfurt is indeed maxing growth, but is about to grow into unhappiness if you don't get a garrison soldier in there. Again, there's the Toku issue I alluded to.

But, as with Munich, working your only improved tiles is going to continue pushing you into the happy cap faster than the whip anger expires. Hence why I ask about that worker building a mine outside either city, and wonder why you don't use the turn off growth button.

If you are talking about Hamburg
?

@nares
Spoiler :
Regarding Toku

I hate Tokugawa.

Alot.

You might see that I refused him tribute. I'm not even sure had I accepted his demands if it would have pushed us into trade territory. So gifting him anything now definitely won't be helping.

I just don't think it is worth dealing with him nicely. He is a complete pain to get to pleased and at some point we or Saladin will get Alphabet and we can move from there.

@vale
Spoiler :
He is a complete pain to get to pleased and at some point we or Saladin will get Alphabet and we can move from there.
He hits pleased at +5. Were you talking about friendly?

I mean, I guess if you hate him that much.

I still think you can get a lot out of it, even with gifting him Aesthetics.

The fair & forthright ve will diminish, but as it does you can compensate with years of trade and shared faith ves.

Spoiler :
Oh, you mean the avoid city growth option. Hmm. I don't like to use that since it is very easy to forget to turn it off. I instead prefer to whip away unhappies in decent sized chunks. Once Munich gets a Library, we will have a stagnation option at 4 population (fish - scientist - scientist - engineer.

Once Frankfurt gets its forge/grass mine it will have options to slow/limit growth as needed.

Hamburg is set for slow growth and avoiding unhappy population, Cologne obviously has a perfect stagnation situation available essentially forever since it can work coastal tiles and the 2 mines in some combination to avoid growth and maximize what it is doing. Berlin is pretty much able to effectively whip away enough population to avoid happiness problems until we are out of settlable land.

In short, screw Toku. I'm not gonna play his game for the possibility of trading for silver and get Alphabet slightly earlier.

@vale
Spoiler :
what did he demand from you?

That's kind of amusing, that he would research Alphabet before you or Saladin, probably just so he could start making ******** demands. Still, I think he's better to befriend than to piss off, especially here, where the player's own instinct is to minimize military buildup.

Also, are you saying that the whip anger is mostly intentional? You intend to whip Munich for the library soon, and cap it at size two until some anger expires?

Wow you guys are quick!

Played my set, I am not "estatic" with it, but I am semi-pleased. Writing it up now, will probably use another post for it though. I just wanted to give some props for the quickness of the responses, it shows that we all feel strongly that this format has a LOT of potential.

So give me an hour for my write up, then have at me, guys!

@ All:

We decided only reports and screenshots need to be in SPOILER tags.

Only information regarding shadows which may not be present or known in any of the 'official' reports should 'spoilered'.

Discussion about any of the official reports can be posted in the open.

Anybody who has not played their round will need to avoid the thread (or from reading the posts) until after they've played their round.

*sigh* Sorry for my insolence and for not warning you, but my sister had a Confirmation (Link to Wiki incase people wonder wat it is, dunno what the word is in pure english?), and I was kind of busy, glad OTAKU did his Deputy job well and looking foward to this next round. Also I found it fine that OTAKU had the final word this round since, imo, the decision was between his save and Rolos'... very well, let the next round begin

OK Here we go, Wonder Round for me (no secret there, eh)

Spoiler :
I opened the save, changed the name to my own, for log purposes, save, and restarted. I am going to do my report from my log, and see how that works out. I plan to add comments in italic-bold and trim "dead" turns for space reasons.

Turn 80/750 (2000 BC)
Research begun: Masonry (8 Turns)
Civics Change: MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany) from 'Tribalism' to 'Slavery'

Right away, I make two pretty large changes. I switch from Pottery to Masony (no beakers in Pottery yet, so I wont decay any) and also switch into Slavery, as I want to start cracking that whip in Berlin pretty soon.

Turn 83/750 (1925 BC)
A Mine was built near Berlin

At this point, the mine across the channel is done. I jump the worker into the Galley there, and sail him into Berlin. This is perfect timing, because I also whip the Settler for 2 here, and the Galley can sail him down to his destination. I put the overflow into the 3rd Workboat, as I will need that extra food eventually for more settlers. Worker builds a road to the Copper.

The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Settler

Turn 84/750 (1900 BC)
Berlin begins: Work Boat (7 turns)

Turn 85/750 (1875 BC)
Berlin finishes: Work Boat

I build another Warrior here to garrison the new city. I will eventaully need a few more Warriors. I should have built 5 or 6 before hooking up the Copper, but I decided not to.

Turn 86/750 (1850 BC)
Berlin begins: Warrior (4 turns)
A Fishing Boats was built near Berlin
Berlin grows to size 4

Galley drops settler off, and Hamburg is founded. I start with the Oracle, I want to put some hammers into it ASAP.

Turn 88/750 (1800 BC)
Hamburg founded
Hamburg begins: The Oracle (75 turns)
Tech learned: Masonry

Masonry comes in, just in time since my Warrior is almost done in Berlin. No GLH yet though, I want another Worker, and I want some overflow for the GLH. I start on Pottery, since I need it for MC off the Oracle.

Turn 89/750 (1775 BC)
Research begun: Pottery (8 Turns)
Berlin finishes: Warrior

Turn 90/750 (1750 BC) [03-May-2008 09:17:51]
Berlin begins: Worker (6 turns)

Sal comes by and asks me to adopt Hinduism, which I accept. Why not get good relations for now.

State Religion Change: MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany) from 'no State Religion' to 'Hinduism'
Attitude Change: Saladin(Arabia) towards MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany), from 'Cautious' to 'Pleased'

Worker done in 1 turn, so I whip it, and start the GLH. Pottery also finishes. Now I realize I still need Polytheism for the ToA, so I start it.

Turn 97/750 (1575 BC)
Berlin begins: The Great Lighthouse (50 turns)

The whip was applied in Berlin
Tech learned: Pottery
Berlin finishes: Worker

Turn 98/750 (1550 BC)
Research begun: Polytheism (12 Turns)

Turn 104/750 (1400 BC)
A Mine was built near Hamburg

I sent one of the workers to build a mine near Hamburg to help the Oracle. Every hammer gets multiplied there. I also notice that I am only a couple turns from going to 2-pop, so I take the opportunity to stick a Monument in front of the Oracle, with the intention of applying some whip-overflow into it, magnified with all the bonuses of IND and Marble, of course.

Turn 106/750 (1350 BC)
Hamburg begins: Monument (9 turns)

Berlin grows to size 5
Hamburg grows to size 2

Turn 108/750 (1300 BC) [03-May-2008 09:31:00]
Tech learned: Polytheism

Poly in, start Writing. I have also been making a mine on the Forested hill near Berlin, with the Forest hammers into the GLH.

Turn 109/750 (1275 BC)
Research begun: Writing (12 Turns)
A Mine was built near Berlin

Civ4ScreenShot0039.jpg

The whip was applied in Hamburg
Hamburg finishes: Monument

Monument whipped, some hammers into Oracle.

Civ4ScreenShot0040.jpg

Turn 110/750 (1250 BC)
A Cottage was built near Hamburg

Turn 113/750 (1175 BC) [03-May-2008 09:38:47]
Berlin finishes: The Great Lighthouse

Civ4ScreenShot0041.jpg

GLH done. Sweet. City in good shape with mines and food. One cottage down as well, and I can work it some to juggle food and growth for whip unhappiness. I start a Granary. Whip anger almost gone, so the 6th pop wont cause any unhappiness.

Turn 114/750 (1150 BC)
Berlin begins: Granary (5 turns)
Whip anger has decreased in Berlin

Turn 115/750 (1125 BC)
Berlin grows to size 6

Turn 116/750 (1100 BC)
A Cottage was built near Berlin

2nd cottage of Berlin done. I will work them as I can from here out as I need to avoid growth. You have to do this when you are a whip-overflow-er, in the end, you get more production from the whip than you would if you just let it go.

Hamburg finishes: The Oracle

Oracle comes in, I take MC as planned. I considered Monarchy, but decided against it for now. I will tech it soon though. I start Hamburg Granary, a very important building in a slow-growth city like this.

Civ4ScreenShot0042.jpg

Turn 117/750 (1075 BC)
Tech learned: Metal Casting
Hamburg begins: Granary (9 turns)
Hamburg's borders expand

With Monument, and 1 turn of Oracle culture, I get a border pop in Hamburg.

Turn 118/750 (1050 BC)
Berlin begins: The Temple of Artemis (31 turns)
The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Granary

Used the whip to finish off the Granary in Berlin, and put some overflow into the ToA. It was only a 1-pop whip, but thats ok, because I plan to disrupt the ToA for another Settler soon.

Turn 119/750 (1025 BC)
Tech learned: Writing

Writing in, I take Maths next, with an eye on a possible Hanging Gardens, and more bang for the Chopping Buck. I am also looking for Health help, since my resources are severely limited in that department.

Turn 120/750 (1000 BC)
Research begun: Mathematics (28 Turns)

Turn 122/750 (950 BC) [03-May-2008 09:47:19]
Berlin begins: Settler (10 turns)
Judaism founded in a distant land

Time to stick a Settler in front of the ToA while whip-anger goes away.

Turn 124/750 (900 BC)
A Mine was built near Hamburg
Whip anger has decreased in Hamburg

Turn 125/750 (875 BC)
Hamburg finishes: Granary

Granary finished, start Lighthouse. If I need commerce help, the coastal tiles are food neutral and have 3 commerce with Colossus. I also built a Cottage near Hamburg, which will get as much action as I can.

Turn 126/750 (850 BC)
Hamburg begins: Lighthouse (18 turns)

Turn 131/750 (725 BC)
The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin grows to size 4
Berlin finishes: Settler

Used the whip for the Settler in Berlin, overflow into the ToA. Check it out, I love this game mechanic:

Civ4ScreenShot0045.jpg

Also did some exploring with the Galley and Scout.

Civ4ScreenShot0044.jpg

Copper City founded, starts a Monument. I generally pop-whip Monuments first in all cities unless I am CRE. It slows them a bit, but not terribly so.

Civ4ScreenShot0049.jpg

Turn 133/750 (675 BC)
Munich founded
Munich begins: Monument (45 turns)
Whip anger has decreased in Berlin

Turn 134/750 (650 BC)
Hamburg grows to size 2
Hinduism has spread: Hamburg

Hamburg gets a population and Hinduism, sweet!

Turn 136/750 (600 BC) [03-May-2008 09:59:55]
Berlin grows to size 5

2nd cottage near Hamburg done. Now each city has 2 to work as they can. With Trade Routes, Cottages arent a critical, but its still important to grow them as much as you can as fast as you can. Math comes in, and heres where I make a mistake. I take CoL, forgetting I dont have Ag yet. Argh, the Copper City is going to need a farm to grow and/or work the Copper tile.

Civ4ScreenShot0050.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0051.jpg

Turn 139/750 (525 BC)
A Cottage was built near Hamburg
Tech learned: Mathematics

Turn 140/750 (500 BC)
Research begun: Code of Laws (25 Turns)
A Mine was built near Munich

So now I have Copper, and can no longer use cheap Warriors as happy-faces under HR when I get it. Oh well. Its only Monarch, and these are exactly the types of little "mistakes" in technique that are OK at Monarch.

A few turns later, ToA is done, and I choose to build a Forge.

Turn 141/750 (485 BC)
Berlin begins: Forge (9 turns)
Berlin finishes: The Temple of Artemis

Civ4ScreenShot0052.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0053.jpg

Here is where I realize my mistake with Ag and CoL. Ag is only 5 turns, I shouldnt lose any beakers I already put into CoL. Lucky.

Civ4ScreenShot0054.jpg

Turn 142/750 (470 BC)
Research begun: Agriculture (5 Turns)

Scout finds Jaoa.

Civ4ScreenShot0057.jpg

Turn 143/750 (455 BC)
Contact made: Portuguese Empire

Turn 144/750 (440 BC)
A Hamlet was built near Hamburg

Turn 145/750 (425 BC)
Hinduism has spread: Munich

Cool, no missionaries required! Love auto-spread.

Turn 146/750 (410 BC)
Tech learned: Agriculture
Berlin finishes: Forge
Munich finishes: Monument

Forge done in Berlin. Monument whipped in Copper City. Ag in, I continue CoL, and start building that farm. I also start Colossus in Berlin and a Granary in Munich. I also find a hut up by Jaoa! Glad I have a scout up there. I get a Warrior. Oh well, no free techs today I guess. Hamburg has whipped its LH and starts a Forge. IND + EXP is strong for a player like me who likes to build Granaries and Forges ASAP in all cities. Love getting the overflow doubled by the traits, too.

Turn 147/750 (395 BC)
Research begun: Code of Laws (18 Turns)
Berlin begins: The Colossus (13 turns)
Munich begins: Granary (8 turns)
Tribal village results: warrior
Hamburg begins: Forge (45 turns)

After End Turn:
The whip was applied in Hamburg
Berlin grows to size 6
Hamburg grows to size 2
Hamburg finishes: Lighthouse
Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'

Turn 148/750 (380 BC)
A Mine was built near Munich
Whip anger has decreased in Berlin

Another hut by Jaoa! He didnt explore this area very well yet, eh. A little gold this time, sigh. No luck for us peons.

Turn 149/750 (365 BC)
Tribal village results: a little gold

Some turns later, my first GP comes in, a Merchant, as expected. I bulb Currency in a heartbeat. I will be considering settling future GMs in some of my food-poor cities though.

Civ4ScreenShot0061.jpg

Turn 152/750 (320 BC)
Enrico Dandolo (Great Merchant) born in Berlin
Tech learned: Currency
Munich's borders expand
Munich finishes: Granary

I start my Forge in Copper City, and also meet Toku. Great, he has Alphabet already, but of course, wont even Open Borders with me. I will keep trying.

Turn 154/750 (290 BC)
Munich begins: Forge (15 turns)
Contact made: Japanese Empire
Berlin's borders expand

Turn 155/750 (275 BC)
Civics Change: Saladin(Arabia) from 'Paganism' to 'Organized Religion'

Looks like Sal founded Judaism as well as Hinduism. Hmm, that means Holy Cities that need conquering!

I finally finish that stupid farm, and find yet another hut up by Jaoa, and got yet another Warrior. Oh well, thats 2 cheap garrison units for me. Berlin is nearly unhappy size and starts another Settler for the other half of Marble Island, which will be whipped for 2 into Colossus (which is nearly done, actually). Hamburg finishes its Forge. Not like I will ever be able to run an engineer specialist there. I have been running one on and off in Berlin as Colossus builds and I stall growth.

Turn 156/750 (260 BC)
A Farm was built near Munich
A Cottage was built near Hamburg
Tribal village results: warrior
Berlin begins: Settler (8 turns)
Hamburg finishes: Forge
Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards Saladin(Arabia), from 'Pleased' to 'Cautious'

Hamburg starts a Barracks. If we are going to take down Sal, no sense in NOT having CR1 troops to do it. Now if only I can get that Cover Event!

Turn 157/750 (245 BC)
Hamburg begins: Barracks (13 turns)

Turn 158/750 (230 BC)]
Munich grows to size 2

Turn 160/750 (200 BC)
The whip was applied in Berlin
Tech learned: Code of Laws
Confucianism founded in Munich
Confucianism has spread: Munich
Berlin grows to size 5
Berlin finishes: Settler
Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards Saladin(Arabia), from 'Cautious' to 'Pleased'

Big turn. I whip the Settler in Berlin for 2. I also finish CoL and found Confu in Munich, I send the Missionary to Berlin. I am thinking about an AP-Switcheroo later in the game is possible. I love that trick, but its better with a religious type leader like Ramesses or even Sal himself.

Civ4ScreenShot0063.jpg

I start Construction, cats are going to be a MUST. Colossus is only 1 turn away.

Turn 161/750 (185 BC)
Research begun: Construction (16 Turns)
Confucianism has spread: Berlin
Berlin finishes: The Colossus

Civ4ScreenShot0064.jpg

Colossus done, I start a Barracks in Berlin.

Turn 162/750 (170 BC)
Berlin begins: Barracks (8 turns)
Whip anger has decreased in Hamburg
Hamburg finishes: Barracks

One Barracks done, I start an Axeman. I have seen some Swords over on Sals land. A pile of Axes and Cats should be enough to take him out, especially if he has Swords in his cities for garrison units in addition to his Archers.

Turn 163/750 (155 BC)
Hamburg begins: Axeman (9 turns)
A Mine was built near Munich

2nd city on Marble Island gets founded. I go with the spot 4W of the Marble. It gets both FPs, is on the river, and has a few hills and a few grasslands. Monument will be whipped at 2.

Turn 164/750 (140 BC)]
Cologne founded
Cologne begins: Monument (23 turns)
Berlin finishes: Barracks

Berlins Barracks done, start an Axeman there.

Meanwhile I have explored a bit of the next couple island over, and notice Sal also started on an Island, but had access to a big chunk of land. He already has a city on that big chunk as well. I hope this means I can take his first two cities easier, since there wont be reinforcements coming over. I do have to remember to build a few Triremes, to take out any attempt to ferry troops from the big chunk when I go after him.

Civ4ScreenShot0067.jpg

Turn 165/750 (125 BC)]
Berlin begins: Axeman (4 turns)
Hamburg grows to size 3

Turn 167/750 (95 BC)
Berlin finishes: Axeman

First Axe done in Berlin, but now that I am building them in other cities, I switch to an Aqueduct, for both the health to grow and a shot at the HGs.

Turn 168/750 (80 BC)
Berlin begins: Aqueduct (10 turns)
Munich begins: Barracks (75 turns)
Hamburg begins: Galley (38 turns)
Axeman promoted: City Raider I

I start a Galley, and sent the other one over to pick up the Warriors for garrisons in the 2 new cities. That way I can use all my Axes for Sal. Munich starts its Barracks as well. More whipping has hurried these along, but I need to get some growth eventually here. One thing about whipping at this point, with the Granary, the cities grow back pretty quickly, so 3 to 2 and 2 to 1 arent as painful as 6 to 5 re-growth wise. However, it is still a population lost that cant work a tile.

The log doesnt seem to record agreements with AIs, but here I open borders with Sal and Jaoa. Jaoa is cautious because of religion, of course. Toku wont open borders, but has no religion yet.

The whip was applied in Hamburg
The whip was applied in Munich
Hamburg finishes: Axeman
Munich finishes: Forge
Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany), from 'Annoyed' to 'Cautious'

Turn 169/750 (65 BC)
Axeman promoted: City Raider I
Attitude Change: Saladin(Arabia) towards MC 1 Bismark - Bleys(Germany), from 'Pleased' to 'Friendly'

Sal is Friendly. Nice, gotta love backstabbing at Friendly. He and Jaoa dont get along so well either, for religious reasons, of course.

Turn 171/750 (35 BC)
Munich grows to size 2

Turn 173/750 (5 BC)
Tech learned: Construction

Construction comes in, one more turn for this Session. I start Monarchy. Need to grow these cities.

Turn 174/750 (10 AD)
Research begun: Monarchy (11 Turns)

And thats it. Here is some more pics of the situation:

Berlin:

Civ4ScreenShot0065.jpg

My Empire, all 4 cities. Next set I would be building 2 more cities, one more on Marble Island, and another on the island to the far-south.

Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

As I said, I am satisfied, but not ecstatic. I am planning nothing but Axes and Cats, with an occasional Galley as well. Aquaduct is almost done in Berlin, which will open HG, but I have not decided on that yet. Still, the Duct will let me grow more. I should tech Archery and Alphabet myself, I suppose, after Monarchy, and get Archers up for HR happiness so I dont waste Axes on it. Other important techs are CS, of course, and Machinery for Maces. I would love to get Maces before I go, but thats a lot of techs. I am planning to run an Engineer Specialist in Berlin full-time, maybe I will pop a GE and bulb Machinery while I am building up for war. There is also a Barb City to the east of Sals island on the big chunk that I WILL take before war with Sal. It has good sites all around it. So I need 3 Galleys filled with Axes and a couple Cats for that, then hopefully be at Maces soon.

No worries Diamond, thats why we have a "Team" working on this project. I think rolo had the preferred save, for sure, so there was no controversy at all.

Ok, here is my round. I'm very pleased with how it went compared to last round. I decided to revamp my previous idea for this game and I think it came out pretty well. I would appreciate any feedback.

Spoiler :

Ok, I thought long and hard about it and I decided that, since our capital is our only strong city, early bureaucracy was important, so I decided to beeline it, taking CoL off of the oracle. My hope was that we would meet someone else who we could trade monarchy from. Alas, we met other civs and did a lot of trading, but they didn't have monarchy! So, that one gamble didn't pay off, but I think the rest of it went quite well. I decided to give up on the ToA and instead did some other things.

Now, here's the thing. I figured that if we founded Confuc in Hamburg that it would spread to our surrounding cities there and it would mean that none of the cities on that island would have to build a monument! The gambit worked and the 3 cities that I built on the southern island and 1 city I built on the small island south of that--NONE of them had to build a monument!! That's a lot of saved hammers woot!
