Monarchists' Cookbook I

I knew my latin is kind of broken. I figured it'd be something like that, but novus was the only form of the word I knew, so I decided to try and play it safe :mischief::blush:

Round 4: 700 AD - 1200 AD

I'm finally back and played the round -- though I was kind of out of it, so I don't think I did too well.

Spoiler :
Turn 220/750 (700 AD) [20-May-2008 12:19:26]

My first order of business was to send ALL THREE Galleys east. There's nothing any of them can do back home, so there's really no point in having any there -- much less all three.

Turn 222/750 (730 AD) [20-May-2008 12:35:19]

I made contact with Mongolia and immediately gifted KK 40 Gold to get on his Pleased side. This came in handy later, because he 'requested' Civil Service a few turns later (which I declined).

I also executed a 1pop whip in Berlin for some overflow into the National Epic.

730AD_KK_gift.jpg

Turn 223/750 (745 AD) [20-May-2008 12:50:41]
Cologne begins: Barracks (8 turns)

I start (and whip) a Barracks in Cologne. Since Cologne is at the center of my world, it will undertake the expansion needs -- both in military and in Settlers/Workers. It will also eventually house the Heroic Epic.

I overflow the Barracks whip into a Worker for Hsung-Nu.

Now, this is a trivial point, but one I'll make since my brother seemed perplexed by its concept the first time I revealed it to him.

Some turns later, instead of sending my new Worker all the way from Cologne to Hsung-Nu, I sent the new worker next door to Dortmund and Dortmund's Worker to Hsung-Nu. I also used my Galley to shave off 2 turns of movement through the hills.

805AD_Galley_move1.jpg

805AD_Galley_move2.jpg

Turn 227/750 (805 AD) [20-May-2008 12:55:02]
Berlin begins: Trireme (3 turns)
Berlin begins: Trireme (3 turns)

After the National Epic, Berlin builds two Triremes for possible future defense. I probably could've done without them, but I never feel comfortable without something defending my seafood.

Turn 228/750 (820 AD) [20-May-2008 13:22:28]
Tech learned: Paper

After learning Paper, I negotiated a few trades:
  • Joao: 2 GPT for Clam (later renegotiated to 3 GPT)
  • Saladin: Dye, 3 GPT for Copper (later renegotiated to Dye, 4 GPT)
  • Kublai Khan: 2 GPT for Cow
  • Luis XIV: World Map, 120 Gold for Code of Laws
  • Saladin: World Map for nothing (gift)

Paper + Map Trades = Circumnavigation bonus!

850AD_Circumnavigation.jpg

Turn 229/750 (835 AD) [20-May-2008 13:24:20]
Research begun: Music (7 Turns)
The whip was applied in Cologne
The whip was applied in Frankfurt
Berlin finishes: Trireme
Cologne finishes: Lighthouse
Frankfurt finishes: Forge
Frankfurt begins: Worker (8 turns) (4 turns due to overflow)

I wasn't sure what KK was up to, but since he could research Music, I figured I should cover my bases and get to it first for the free GA. This time, though, I saved the GA. I don't need a Golden Age right now, and I'd rather wait until after I [possibly] have the MoM, so the GA is still sleeping in Berlin.

Cologne whips a Maceman with enough overflow for 2 Archers (one for happiness garrison in Cologne and one for new city garrison abroad).

Frankfurt whips a Forge into a Worker to build up some Cottages. (@ all: am I the only one who sends Workers with Settlers to new cities? I value a Worker more than I do garrison!)

Turn 233/750 (880 AD) [20-May-2008 13:34:11]
The whip was applied in Cologne
Cologne finishes: Maceman
Cologne Begins: Archer (4 turns) (1 turn due to overflow)
Cologne finishes: Archer (4 turns) (1 turn due to overflow)
Coco Chanel (Great Merchant) born in Berlin
Frankfurt finishes: Worker

I settled the GM in Munich. All I need him for is the extra Gold, and Munich needs the food if I expect it to keep building anything at all.

I also 2pop whip another Maceman, Archer, Archer combo in Cologne.

Turn 235/750 (900 AD) [20-May-2008 13:40:58]
Tech learned: Music
William Shakespeare (Great Artist) born in Berlin

Great Artist from Music born and put to sleep in Berlin -- where he still resides.

Turn 237/750 (920 AD) [20-May-2008 13:54:42]

Gold is discovered outside Berlin! It turns out the Gold is found too late to help with Shwedagon Paya, but this means the Gold/Cow/Fish city is bumped down on the priority list to a "backfill" city now that I don't need any of those resources.

920AD_random_GOLD.jpg

Turn 238/750 (930 AD) [20-May-2008 13:56:09]
The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Settler
Berlin begins: Angkor Wat (22 turns)

I whip a Settler in Berlin, which will head east -- most likely becoming the Ivory or Gold city.

I send the mostly exhausted Worker from Marble Island with the Settler to ensure the new city comes online as best and as quickly as possible.

Turn 239/750 (940 AD) [20-May-2008 13:58:28]
Tech learned: Calendar

IBT
Civics Change: Louis XIV(France) from 'Paganism' to 'Free Religion'

Louis builds Shwedagon Paya in Paris.

Turn 240/750 (950 AD) [20-May-2008 14:02:56]
Hamburg begins: Mausoleum of Maussollos (43 turns)

I'm not sure I'll finish MoM before anybody else, but it never hurts to try, eh?

Turn 241/750 (960 AD) [20-May-2008 14:09:12]
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Bactrian, Axeman defeats (0.75/5): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 71.3%)
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Bactrian, Maceman 1 of Cologne (Maceman) defeats (4.16/8): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 88.0%)
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Bactrian, Axeman defeats (0.25/5): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 61.0%) (next turn, actually)
Captured Bactrian (Barbarian) (next turn actually)
Maceman 1 of Cologne (Maceman) promoted: Woodsman I
Maceman 1 of Cologne (Maceman) promoted: Woodsman II

I crossed my fingers and sent in the 7/10 CR2 Axeman at Bactrian. Given the probability, a victory would give me a Lvl 4 unit so Cologne could start the Heroic Epic. (omg he won!!)

I then crossed my fingers again and sent in an unpromoted Maceman (and won). Since BtS and the Woodsman III buff, I always make a Woody III M*A*S*H unit. They're better than a Medic I and don't require an attached GG to get there. They can also later make Medic 1 for a super healer if you can baby them.

Unfortunately, I can only do it at this point with a Maceman, so I'll need to babysit him to ensure he doesn't become a stack defender by accident and die in the future.

960AD_Bactrian_attack1.jpg

960AD_Bactrian_attack2.jpg

970AD_Bactrian_attack3.jpg

I also got a nice little random event outside Munich giving its Grassland Hill Mine an extra 2 commerce!

950AD_event_40thieves.jpg

Turn 242/750 (970 AD) [20-May-2008 14:12:08]
Axeman promoted: City Raider III
The whip was applied in Cologne
Cologne finishes: Maceman
Cologne begins: Heroic Epic (14 turns)

Now that I have a lvl4 unit (yay!), I can begin the Heroic Epic in Cologne. Instead of slow building it, I'm going to 2pop whip two Macemen into it.

Also, Bactrian captured and kept (see above). Bactrian represents 3 new resources and Fur after the 2nd border pop!

Turn 244/750 (990 AD) [20-May-2008 14:15:44]
Munich begins: Catapult (7 turns)

Munich doesn't really need anymore infrastructure, so it begins pumping out Catapults.

In hindsight, Munich should've built a few Hindu Setlers.

Turn 245/750 (1000 AD) [20-May-2008 14:18:43]
The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Hindu Monastery

I forgot to account for Bureaucracy and had to execute a 1pop whip in Berlin for the overflow into Angkor Wat.

Turn 246/750 (1010 AD) [20-May-2008 14:21:19]
Research begun: Engineering (9 Turns)

I start Engineering for everything BUT Trebs, lol. The extra movement will help my units get from Cologne to Magyar more quickly, while Castles will boost my already ridiculous trade routes. It's also on the way to Chemistry (Privateers).

Turn 247/750 (1020 AD) [20-May-2008 14:24:46]
Stuttgart founded
Stuttgart begins: Monument (12 turns)

Stuttgart founded on Ivory.

Stuttgart doesn't have much to do while waiting for its border pop but will make a decent production city once it hits population 5.

1020AD_Stuttgart_founded.jpg

Turn 248/750 (1030 AD) [20-May-2008 14:29:35]
The whip was applied in Cologne
Cologne finishes: Maceman

Turn 249/750 (1040 AD) [20-May-2008 14:35:05]
The whip was applied in Frankfurt
Frankfurt finishes: Harbor
Cologne finishes: Heroic Epic

Now that the HE is finished in Cologne, I won't be doing anymore Maceman/Archer/Archer whips. Instead, I'll be slow building units while growing to Population 6 -- at which point I'll whip a Settler for 3 into whatever unit I need (~100 overflow).

1050AD_Cologne_HE.jpg

Turn 250/750 (1050 AD) [20-May-2008 14:36:51]
Euclid (Great Scientist) born in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Academy (next turn, actually)

Great Scientist born in Berlin and settled as an Academy. Who needs to bulb anything when you're this far ahead, eh?

On the next turn, I get a random event outside Berlin that grants me a one-time bonus of +42 Gold. (nice, but not worth a screenshot)

Turn 255/750 (1100 AD) [20-May-2008 14:52:24]
Research begun: Education (13 Turns)

I'm not actually after Education for Liberalism ... I'm after Chemistry. I'll pop Liberalism for Steel.

Turn 256/750 (1110 AD) [20-May-2008 14:54:52]
While attacking in the wild near Magyar, Maceman 1 of Cologne (Maceman) defeats (6.96/8): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 99.1%)
Tribal village results: map
Dortmund begins: Harbor (14 turns)
Bactrian finishes: Monument

Lollerskates ... I popped a village for a useless map.

I messed up twice here.

First off, I totally forgot to whip Bactrian's Monument, so I'm about 10 Turns behind on the border pop. Luckily, I don't need the resources in its BFC just yet. (whew)

Also, I intended to apply overflow into Dortmund's Courthouse then begin building a Harbor to whip again into the Courthouse.

3 whips into the Courthouse would build it completely! Unfortunately, I put too many hammers into the Harbour (forgot to add the +100% to my calculation) and had to switch a few things up.

Nevertheless, the Courthouse and Harbour can still be whipped for 1 pop by the end of the round.

Turn 258/750 (1130 AD) [20-May-2008 14:59:03]
Stuttgart begins: Granary (9 turns)
Stuttgart finishes: Granary
The whip was applied in Cologne
Cologne finishes: Settler
Cologne begins: Worker (5 turns)
The whip was applied in Hsung-Nu
Hsung-Nu finishes: Forge

More whipping. I'm a real slave driver. It's really hard to go wrong as long as you work all your resources.

Turn 259/750 (1140 AD) [20-May-2008 15:03:51]
Hsung-Nu begins: Library (45 turns)

I realize at this point Hsung-Nu is losing a Culture Battle against Saladin's city of Kufah. I start a Library with the intention of whipping it to completion shortly.

Turn 260/750 (1150 AD) [20-May-2008 15:06:08]
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Angle, Maceman 1 of Cologne (Maceman) defeats (2.88/8): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 88.0%)
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Angle, Axeman defeats (2.45/5): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 71.3%)
Maceman 2 of Cologne (Maceman) promoted: Combat I
While attacking in Barbarian territory at Angle, Maceman 2 of Cologne (Maceman) defeats (6.80/8): Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 95.0%)
Maceman 2 of Cologne (Maceman) promoted: Medic I (next turn, actually)
Captured Angle (Barbarian)
Razed Angle
Angle lost

I razed Angle, because I want to move it 1S. This new position will give it fewer water tiles and much better production.

I intend to move the Palace to this new city (Dusseldorf) as soon as is plausible, since I expect to be capturing and settling a lot of cities on this large landmass soon.

1150AD_Angle_attack1.jpg

1150AD_Angle_attack2.jpg

1150AD_Angle_attack3.jpg

Turn 262/750 (1170 AD) [20-May-2008 15:15:43]
Dusseldorf founded
Dusseldorf begins: Monument (45 turns)

Dusseldorf is where I hope to move the Palace once the large landmass gets more settled.

1170AD_Angle_refounded.jpg

Turn 263/750 (1180 AD) [20-May-2008 15:17:35]
The whip was applied in Berlin
Berlin finishes: Castle
Berlin begins: Moai Statues (10 turns)
The whip was applied in Dortmund
Dortmund finishes: Catapult
Dortmund begins: Courthouse (23 turns)

I didn't really need to whip in Berlin, but anywhere I can overflow a whip into a Wonder, I'll do it.

The Catapult was whipped in Dortmund to get some overflow into its Courthouse (since I've messed up the other 2pop whips ... grrr).

In hindsight, I should've ended the round 1 turn earlier with the overflow in Berlin still hanging around in case the next player doesn't want to build Moai in Berlin. Oh well ... it's still worth 190 gold if they're built elsewhere.

Turn 264/750 (1190 AD) [20-May-2008 15:22:57]
The whip was applied in Hsung-Nu
Hsung-Nu finishes: Library
Narak (Great Prophet) born in Berlin

Hopefully, this Library will allow me to gain some ground against Saladin's cultural pressure. If not, I'll have to start whipping Temples and Monasteries there. Regardless, I really need to get Hinduism there for the production bonus and extra culture.

State Religion Change: Sitting Bull(Native America) from 'no State Religion' to 'Taoism'

It's worth noting Sitting Bull switched to one of our religions ... but most notably to a religion nobody else shares!

Spoiler Pros, Cons and future prospects :
NOTE: I've excluded the most obvious pro of a giant tech lead on the AI, because everybody will presumably still be light years ahead of the AI.

PROS:
  • Strong economy (with a GP in waiting), despite having several Courthouse-less long distance cities.
  • Great Artist in waiting (i.e., ready-made Golden Age).
  • Good raiding party on the "mainland" (incl. lvl4 unit)
  • Heroic Epic built and in use.
  • Foothold deep into the "mainland".
  • Several resource 'monopolies'.
  • Several slave revolts in other AI cities (/knockwood).

CONS:
  • No emphasis on spreading religion.
  • Only 3 new cities founded.
  • New cities very virgin.
  • Started Moai Statues in Berlin.
  • Little emphasis on Courthouses.

FUTURE PROSPECTS:
  • Build Palace in Dusseldorf.
  • Build Versailles/FP in Munich or Berlin.
  • Capture Karakorum for Globe Theatre.
  • Continue expanding hard onto the mainland -- especially towards Sitting Bull.
  • Get to Astronomy and Chemistry to pump out Privateers.
  • Take Steel from Liberalism.

Hopefully, I've gotten all the data correct this time around ...

An overview of generic demographic data:

NOTE: GNP is taken with the science slider @ 100%.

NOTE2: Of particular note is r_rolo1's economy is not dependent upon the Colossus, because it has already been obsoleted. (Whether you weight that as a pro or a con is up to you.)

Can barbs pose a threat ca. 1200AD? Apparently, the answer is yes, if you overextend yourself thinking you are ok :mischief: Now the question is can my archer make it to, and defend, another undefended city or will I lose it too?

Spoiler :

My plan for this round was to settle as many cities as possible peacefully without tanking my economy. To me, that meant get courthouses/FP/harbors going as much as possible and beg money like mad from AIs to help stay afloat. It also meant settling 3 undefended cities on another new continent when I saw two of Saladin's galleys headed in that direction...I figured I was ok from the two nearby barb cities, but one had copper and an axe and a spear flew into view at 1200AD to sack and raze one city and may now threaten another. Everything was great until that point...Well, here is how it went:

First, I started out wondering why we are getting overseas trade routes and are able to trade resources overseas without astronomy?!?! Is it because we are all connected via galley? Does that make this some kind of fractal map or something?

700AD: Math to Louis for 100; Alpha to SB for 20 (pleased); alpha to Sule for 20

General comments:

-Have 2 GMs headed out for trade missions. That will seriously help our economy a ton.

-I made a calculated gamble that I could get away with a couple of turns of undefended cities, but I lost a city after 1-2 turns. Should've sent at least one mace over and delayed one of the other cities. When you gamble, sometimes you lose I guess. Sucks though. Was in such a nice position until those barbs came and they may threaten another city depending on whether I can get an archer there in time and whether it could defend against both barbs and whether the barbs press on or not...sucks. However, now that the economy is stabilized, resettling that lost city and that region in general will be easy and once we get a handful of maces there are two barb cities for the taking

3 Pros:

-# of cities
-Forbidden Palace built
-Diplomatic situation (diplo victory is open imo)

3 Cons:

-Barb blunder
-Need more workers/improvements
-Barb blunder

I really like futurehermit's save, but I don't think we can defend against those Barbarians in time ... they might even threaten a 3rd city soon!

Still perplexing is how Bleys manages to get so many techs without tech trading and with a comparatively lower BPT. :goodjob:

And though I like MoM, I don't like polluting my GP pool, so I actually count all saves with MoM in Berlin as a CON!

I'm not sure why r_rolo1 chose to obsolete the Colossus just yet (Observatories, maybe?), but I think it's well worth noting he has the 2nd strongest economy even without it! I count Astronomy as a CON but his strong economy despite it a very strong PRO.

Solon70 has a particularly weak GP Farm, but that's nothing time and a National Epic can't resolve. The fact he has Versailles started is a huge PRO, because the AI tends to gobble that thing up quick in my games.

Similarly, I dig the Hagia Sophia (great gpp), so Solon70 gets kudos for that as well.

I think I have the same CON against Bleys, futurehermit and Solon70 (though I'm not sure if it's their fault or just the way it went): The AI (particularly Saladin) trails a lot closer in known techs by comparison to some of the other saves.

It appears we all more-or-less neglected spreading Hinduism, but Winston Hughes picked up at the end and has 2 Hindu Missionaries just a couple turns from spreading Hinduism to Marble Island, which is definitely a PRO.

The only problem with the above statement is that Winston Hughes is running Pacifism, so the state religion doesn't mean near as much anymore by comparison to OR. It's also worth noting as we expand our cities and military, Pacifism is likely to get expensive. I don't think extra GP are worth it quite so much, so I think I count Pacifism as a CON for now.

That being said, Winston Hughes having a sleeping GE is a HUGE PRO to me. I frequently use a GE to rush Ironworks or West Point in low production games like this. Again ... HUGE PRO having that in the bag.

In Diamondeye's and Winston Hughes' games, the AP resides in Medina, so we know the AP is Hindu (benefiting us) and at least moderately accessible should we want it later. This is a definite PRO. (In futurehermit's game, the AP is being built in Berlin, so I guess it fits in this category as well.)

Winston Hughes and r_rolo1 both get PROps for having great AI relations.

OTAKUjbski is trailing by comparison in tech but has the strongest economy despite being spread far and wide. (PRO) Conversely, there are a lot of "backfill holes" which the AI could sneak into and settle if we're not mindful in the next round. (CON)

Everybody had solid expansion this round; the highlights (to me) are OTAKUjbski for capturing (and resettling) Angle and pressing so far into the mainland, futurehermit for spamming the most cities (and courthouses!) and Winston Hughes for settling the Plains Hill Fish/Clam island.

Speaking of expansion, a CON of Solon70's save is that Saladin has a city on the mainland east of Cologne (NW of Bactrian). Similarly, Bleys' save has an Arabian city north of Cologne just south of Hsung-Nu.

It appears Bleys and OTAKUjbski are the only saves with a lvl4 unit. (PRO) It's also worth mentioning OTAKUjbski has already built the HE and is set up to continuously pump Settlers and military units in Cologne. (PRO)

----

That's all the observations I have for now.

I'm not voting yet, because I'd like to hear others' opinions as well in case I've misinterpreted or missed something.

Great points. In defense of my save, I do have 2 missionaries on a boat headed for the Cologne island, and I have spread Hindu to both Marble island cities.

I can explain my tech lead fairly easily as well. Look at my relations (not horrible, but not really great). I did not gift a single tech, I do not give in to threats or requests for help. At this level, I just dont think its worth it, since I will have a pretty large military advantage soon enough. At Emperor and above, I think that kind of attitude will hurt my play significantly, but for Monarch, I am a very stingy player. I also tend to bulb more and settle less, and when I do trade, I often go with offering a single tech that has a higher cost than the one I am after, so I end up getting the tech I want, + all their gold, + their map in return. I have not given a single AI my map this game, and 2 trades got me the circumvent bonus, plus a tech I lacked, plus gold. I also ALWAYS do the "trade to one, trade to all his buddies too" philosophy when trading techs, even if I get hosed on the 2nd or 3rd trade. Its better to get 50 gold and a map for CoL from an AI if I just made a decent trade to his best friend, because odds are I wont get anything from him. I think this also helps keep the AIs from cashing in on my tech trades.

Here is an example (purely hypothetical, but feasible):

I trade CoL to KK for Monotheism and Drama. KK takes CoL, puts Drama with it, and trades it to Jaoa for Currency. However, if I have already traded CoL to Jaoa for 50 gold and a map, KK doesnt have enough to offer, so he doesnt get Currency at all.

@OTAKU

Astro makes me Saladin free in terms of GLH and that alone worths losing the collosus.... Besides that Observatories and ( especially ) Galleons are pretty useful. To add if you get hut lucky ( like I did ;) ) you can think on something higher for Lib, like steel ( Cannons + ( Frigates + privateers on the way ) + drydocks )....

And my economy is better than most saves, because of losing Colossus: my cities are finally working cottages  Seriously, my economy is better because I took care of not putting more cities in the island where we already had 3, avoiding the maintenance skyrocketing.... as my plan is moving palace to there I might settle one or two more cities ( not sure... I think I could win with the current cities ), but now it would had been a unnecessary burden.

P.S I didn't trade techs in my turnset... besides KK Feud ( that I plan to grab sometime ) there was nothing in the table and I wasn't in the need of cash.

I agree with rolo, it was worth it to pop Astronomy. I wouldnt bee-line it research-wise, because I think there are better tech paths for now, but I am not sweating the loss of Colossus at this point, since we have the entire map exposed and all cities open for trade. With Astro, the inevitable (ok I say "inevitable", some of you say "never needed") war with Saladin, either right away if we take a save where he built the AP, or just after he does if we take a save he hasnt) will be far less painful, since all of our "core" cities run through Sal's Open Border. We would actually lose the ability to trade with our own "New Islands" without Astro.

I actually think a war + vassalization of Sal, take the AP, get a Diplo Win (since we have a vassal to vote for us) would be the quickest path to a victory this game. A few more REXed out, fast growing cities and control of the AP without Sal being able to vote for himself would mean this game never even gets to Rifles or Combustion.

I'll say it again. I think Versailles and the Forbidden Palace are being vastly overrated here. State Property eliminates all maintenance costs other than number of cities including dealing with the colonial expenses so it is huge. FP and Versailles don't do that and we can get by with courthouses and +gold, +science buildings if we work towards communism quickly. Depending on how the tech situation goes, we might even be able to slingshot communism off of liberalism which would be very nice because if it is possible, we would only have one turn after we obsolete our 3 best +gpp wonders before our economy sails with SP. With or without existing forbidden palaces, it will sail if only because it is also eliminating the colonial maintenance.

And that is just considering the commerce benefits of State Property which makes the economy much more robust than Free Market and ignores the very obvious production benefits which are just as huge on this map.

So lets see:

Pros
Supercharges commerce economy
Supercharges production economy
Free Great Spy (almost no way we won't be first if we don't push for it)

Cons
Obsoletes Great Library
Obsoletes Parthenon
Obsoletes Temple of Artemis

Ok, so ouch on the cons. I'll give you that much. But the pros outweigh it especially since we probably will need oil eventually anyway.

I think you're underrating the Forbidden Palace. Specifically, I think you're underating moving the Palace.

If the goal is to continue settling on the "mainland", then moving the Palace there will eliminate Colonial Expenses for those new cities. The combination of building the FP in the old world should reduce the overall economic strain of that expansion.

Not to mention if that new city is Commerce-emphasized (something Berlin can't really do all too well with its tiles), the Bureaucracy bonus will give us more bang for our buck.

(Versailles in the middle is just icing.)

I have no argument against State Property, but I prefer to wait on it for a while.

I typically get Steel and Rifling before working my way through Scientific Method to give me as much time as possible in Nationhood to draft the Globe Theatre into dirt (which I might add I'll need to take from KK before I can even make that happen :().

I though the most interesting thing about my round was making the play for Versailles. That isn't to say it was the best move, only that I thought it was an interesting gambit. One thing this format demonstrates is that there are a lot of ways to skin a cat!

I guess it really depends at what point you see yourself fighting that first war. How many turns away from State Property do you figure we are, and can we really continue aggressive REX for that period of time with just courthouses? It seems to me that we haven't really felt the pinch just yet because we haven't settled a bunch of cities on the same land mass, but that day will come.

The bottom line is that there are a million different strategies that lead to a win from this strong position we've put ourselves in. I'm not sure we can ever determine which one is the "best," but I find a lot of value in just hearing about the different approaches and seeing ideas implemented that I might not have thought to try myself.
