Monarchists' Cookbook I

Sushi is great, but we can beeline communism much sooner. I think we can get communism around the time we are closing out the game. We shouldn't need to tech past the early-to-mid renaissance imo. Rifling should be it imo. I don't think we really need cannons either tbh. As soon as we can draft/build rifles that should be all she wrote. I would rather go cs/sp for the immediate empire-wide $savings/production bonus than wait for corporation/medicine/railroad and a GM and GE to hit home (and flight?)

I have to agree with hermit. Rifling is going to signal the beginning of the end for the AIs. I was planning to bee-line it (perhaps even take it from Lib) and use Galleons to go island-hopping, all the while REXing into every crook and cranny of land that I can.

But as it has been noted, Communism is a ways off, and my pre-Rifling goal is mainly to get as many cities down in as many strategic areas as possible, look for fast vertical growth in anticipation of the Nationalism-Rifling combo, and pop the cork when I manage that 30-turn Golden Age I mentioned earlier.

I would tech to combustion after Rifling... hash and smash strat is cleary slowed down if we use galleons as basis ( besides that Drydocks would be extremely helpful... Medic galleons or transports are very nice for this kind of stuff ). MG also help dealing with some cat spam that some AI try to do...

But it might not be needed :p

Combustion could make things smoother, I agree. But, hopefully we could win domination (as opposed to conquest?) before that would be necessary?

The save we will be playing from will be Bleys' for next round, good luck everyone.

(Since I don't understand those postcount=XXX and other codes I would like one of you to link the post or atleast find the URL so that I can link it, also so that I can update OP.

I find it helpful when someone takes the save file and renames it with "Best Ball" in the name, just to avoid any possibility of confusion. I don't know if anyone else cares about this or not, I just happened to like it when we did it after Round 1.

Cool, quite a surprise since, as I said before, I felt this was my weakest round.

As far as linking an actual post, all you have to do is right-click on the # in the upper right hand corner of the post itself, and select "copy link location", then just paste it anywhere you need. So my report is at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6807273&postcount=468

Having Maces and Cats didnt suck either :)

Remember, to try to get a clean, uncorrupted log file, I suggest the following steps:

1. Load the save, as its named.
2. Change the name under the "Your Details" in the Menu
3. Save the game with the new name
4. Exit to Main Menu
5. Reload the save you just created, and a brand new Auto-Log file should be created (if your using BUG, which I think all the Roster players are)

The option for war is ok, but with all the land to the east and our decision to settle peacefully, I think it would be a bit strange to turn around and attack someone (saladin?) now. It just wouldn't make sense imo with what we set out to do. We had the option to attack with cats/maces sooner and if there was risk of Sal getting feudalism before, there is much more risk a round later imo.

Agree, but thats no reason NOT to build some maces and cats, if just for the Power rating benefit and taking down Barb cities. In fact, thats how I played it, writing my report up now.

I bet we see some differences in this one for SURE!

I tried this with a couple different names, but it won't create a new auto-log for me, and so the game continues to crash every time I try to open the event log. Any idea why?

Heres my report for this round. I am satisfied but not excited. I think that there will be some wider variances this round, though, I know I pondered considerably over a couple moves.

Spoiler :
Using the AutoLog again, it looks nice and clean, since I did the same thing I do each round, rename the "Your Details", save, exit, reload.

The first thing I noticed when I opened up the save was two very important deficiencies, not enough workers and not enough cities following my religion. Being in OR, this was hurting me baddly. I like squeezing hammers as much as I can, so watching those non-Hindu cities build stuff was painful.

Turn 220/750 (700 AD)
Research begun: Paper (9 Turns)
Cologne grows to size 5
Cologne finishes: Forge
Frankfurt grows to size 4
Taoism has spread: Dortmund

Turn 221/750 (715 AD)
Cologne finishes: Harbor

Here I decided to build a Galley in Cologne. It was a LONG haul around the bottom of that land mass, and I would need galleys on that side ASAP anyway. I also whipped out my Courthouse in Berlin, and started a Maceman to get some stronger units built, even though I had no intentions of going to war. Units serve many purposes, happy faces under Monarchy, and increased Power Ranking to deter attacks. I tried to slip units in between buildings, just to make sure I had them. Nothing sucks worse than wanting them and not having them. Rather have them, and not need them right away.

Turn 222/750 (730 AD)

Turn 226/750 (790 AD)

Got the Harbor Master event here. I am planning to try to get it done, since Harbors are strong anyway, and a few Caravels wont hurt (they upgrade to Frigates)

Civ4ScreenShot0119.jpg

I had a couple other events, but I am not bothering to post screenshots. One slave-revolt in Berlin, and one Mine-explosion. Thank goodness I had some cash on hand to keep things rolling. The Harbormaster is the only "good" one I got all set.

Going to need a few Triemes, so I turn one out. I have to be ready to stop a possible invasion from KK. He can reach me by Galley, but I cannot reach him (you can only travel on your own cultural ocean tiles).

Some whipping here, to hurry things along some. Overall, I am trying to cut back on the whipping, I want some growth now that I have my happy cap problems solved.

Paper also comes in, and I start Music, for the free Artist. I want the circumvent bonus for my water-riding Settlers, and getting AI maps as part of tech-cash sales is the best way to accomplish that goal.

Civics Change: Saladin(Arabia) from 'Despotism' to 'Hereditary Rule'

Berlin finishes NE, and I also notice Saladin now has Monarchy. He will soon be after Feud, but my espionage points cant quite see his research.

I also noticed he would finally trade me Calendar, so I jump on it. I cant remember what I gave him, though. I had started a Cat in Berlin, but I quickly switched to the MoM, one of my favorite Wonders. Marble too, this is going to be a breeze.

Here I pondered my tech choices, but in the end, I stick with what works for me, and thats Education. Yes, I know we have a big tech lead. I want to keep it that way, be one step closer to Lib, so I can tech around Lib but still be able to pop into it if I see an AI closing in on it.

Yeah, MoM is mine! I seriously love this Wonder. 15 turn Golden Ages are so good. I intend at least 3, the Great Artist I have sleeping, the Taj, and another 2-GPerson one later on, as I either push for a tech goal (combustion maybe?) or whatever. 45 turns of Golden Age at the cost of a few GPeople and some IND+marble+bonus hammers is a deal to me.

Turn 243/750 (980 AD)
Berlin begins: Hindu Missionary (3 turns)

I have built a few more Workers, and now I get serious about spreading my religion. I should have done this MUCH MUCH sooner, but I tend to procrastinate in this game too often. Working on that. I didnt settle that spot since I felt I had time, and instead grabbed a couple spots on the other landmass to the East (on the Elephants for a 2-hammer city tile, and south of that for the Horses)

Drama comes in. I can see by my BUG interface that I am likely to pop another GS next, and he can bulb part of it. PP is a nice tech for us, we will have lots of cottages maturing fairly quickly as our populations go vertical. Its also on the way to Replacable Parts.

Civics Change: Saladin(Arabia) from 'Barbarism' to 'Vassalage'

Well, there it is, the bad news, Sal has his LBs. No worries, Trebs soften them up, and Maces can finish them off, if needed. Trebs + Rifles seems more likely though. Fish in a barrel, even with all those promotions.

Theres the Scientist. I bulb most of whats left of PP. I am gunning for Rifling off Lib, MAYBE!! Depends on when I feel I cant put Lib off anymore. I dont mind my standard "Nationalism from Lib, tech to Rifles, get a Taj Golden Age, and Draft a winning Army" plan. Works pretty well on Monarch, and in this game, I can already tell I will have a huge military tech edge.

Thats it for that set. Lib is just a placeholder, no beakers. Same with most of the build queues. All in all, I am fairly happy with it. I got a few new cities down, started getting some units out, spread the religion around a bit (I have a Galley with 2 missionaries on it headed for the Cologne island), and got some territory. Next round goals include:
Gunpower and Replacable Parts for Rifling from Lib, maybe
More cities on the bigger island, especially the Gold site ASAP, then some units to take Barb cities.
Moving Capitol once a city seems likely, post Bureaucracy probably, since we may want FS by then.
More Triemes, and even Caravels for the Harbormaster quest.

Pros and Cons:

Pros =
Foothold on newest island
Still dominating tech lead
MoM built, and a Great Artist sleeping for a 15-turn Golden Age
Economy still very strong despite the expansion
+1 sea movement from Circumvent bonus (might have forgotten to mention it in report, but I traded for a couple maps)

Cons=
Still not enough workers
Still not enough cities with our Religion
Still not the best diplomatic situation, but Sal is high-Pleased so I dont mind
Could have expanded a bit more, let Sal sneak a city on a decent spot (May be able to culture pressure it enough though, with Theaters from all 4 sides)

I tried this with a couple different names, but it won't create a new auto-log for me, and so the game continues to crash every time I try to open the event log. Any idea why?
You will never be able to access the in-game Event log again in this game, so there is no use trying. Its a known problem, and they are working on it, but there is no fix.

As for the AutoLog, you need to have the BUG mod installed, and the AutoLog feature turned on.

But the in-game Event Log is gone forever, there is no fix.

Oh, okay. You're right, I did have a new auto-log under the new name, I just couldn't access it. Anyway, here's my report for this round.

Since we have such a far-flung empire, I decide to research Optics right away and get the circumnavigation bonus. I change just a couple of production orders - Munich really needs that lighthouse to grow.

Something that was brought up in an earlier round is that cottage spam is actually sort of at odds with ownership of the Colossus. For example, rather than cottage the flood plains on the island just south of Berlin, my preference would be to farm them in order to grow fast and work a bunch of water tiles as quickly as possible. I didn't farm over the cottage we already had there, naturally, but I did farm the one that was available.

I burn the Taoist Missionary we had in Dortmund. This was probably suboptimal, as it doesn't give any culture (not being the state religion) and Taoism will likely spread there naturally from the holy city, but not a big deal.

Turn 229/750 (835 AD) [17-May-2008 21:19:50]

Since the GA is available I'm going to grab it next. No rush in working towards Liberalism thanks to the tech lead.

Civ4ScreenShot0263.jpg

Turn 231/750 (860 AD) [17-May-2008 21:23:22]

Should only take one Caravel to get the circumnav bonus, since we've explored so much of the map already.

Other Player Actions:
Attitude Change: Saladin(Arabia) towards MC 1 Solon Round 3(Germany), from 'Pleased' to 'Friendly'

Frankfurt begins: Harbor (30 turns)
Berlin begins: Caravel (4 turns)

After End Turn:
Cologne grows to size 8
Hsung-Nu grows to size 3
Dortmund finishes: Granary

Other Player Actions:
Taoism has spread: Magyar (Native American Empire)

My Hindu Missionary has arrived in the New World. It might be smarter to plant him in Cologne and build more missionaries from there, but I'm anxious to get Dortmund growing.

Meanwhile, I've sent an axeman wandering, and he finds a goody hut still available, guarded by a barb archer:

Civ4ScreenShot0265.jpg

Turns out to be nothing but more barbs. Oh well!

Turn 239/750 (940 AD) [17-May-2008 21:41:22]
Hinduism has spread: Dortmund
Dortmund begins: Hindu Missionary (20 turns)

Tribal village results: weak hostiles

After End Turn:
Hanno (Great Merchant) born in Berlin
Taoism has spread: Hsung-Nu

Now I have a GM. He can bulb Paper, which I'm already halfway through, and after that Printing Press, which is certainly useful, but I don't have many matured cottages at all. Instead, I decide I'm going to send him on a trade mission, courtesy of my fleet of Caravels, to get some deficit research funds.

Other Player Actions:
State Religion Change: Sitting Bull(Native America) from 'no State Religion' to 'Taoism'
Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards Sitting Bull(Native America), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'

A Pasture was built near Hsung-Nu

After End Turn:
Tech learned: Paper
Cologne finishes: Archer

With Paper in, now it's time to figure out what that Great Artist is doing. He can bulb Drama, once Drama is in he can bulb Theology, and once Theology is in he can bulb Divine Right. In my key strategy decision of the round, I decide to beeline DR with the intent of building Versailles in the New World. This will enable us to build the FP on a different landmass altogether.

Also, since we already have the circumnav bonus, we trade world maps around to anyone who will give them, picking up about 100 gold in the process.

Turn 244/750 (990 AD) [17-May-2008 21:53:44]

Civ4ScreenShot0271.jpg

After End Turn:

With Drama in, Theology is the tech we need to get out of the way to bulb DR. We do a big trade with our good buddy Sal.

Civ4ScreenShot0272.jpg

Turn 247/750 (1020 AD) [17-May-2008 22:03:44]

Berlin begins: Settler (5 turns)
Hamburg begins: Archer (6 turns)
Cologne begins: Barracks (5 turns)

One thing I've skimped on this round is Wonders. With nothing better to do in Munich, I decide to start the MoM.

Turn 249/750 (1040 AD) [17-May-2008 22:14:20]
Munich begins: Mausoleum of Maussollos (38 turns)
A Mine was built near Cologne

After End Turn:
The whip was applied in Frankfurt

Another one of the marble Wonders is available, needing only 15 turns, so I start it in Berlin. I've been using it pretty productively to pump out caravels and missionaries but I can let up on that effort now.

Sal offers us the following yummy trade, obviously we snap up the happiness resource.

Another great event!

Civ4ScreenShot0277.jpg

Not only does this let us spread Hinduism to the couple of cities we haven't hit yet, but it lets us warm up to Toku! Happily he goes whole hog and converts to our religion.

3. Only one more harbor needed to complete Harbormaster quest (Dortmund is working on it).
4. 1700 gold to fund deficit research, with only 2 turns left on Education.
5. Couple nice events this round, including extra hammer in the capital and conversion of Toku to our state religion.
6. Hinduism in all our cities except the newest (missionary arrives there next turn.) We have a GP stashed in Berlin who can build a shrine for either Taoism or Islam if we want.

Cons:

1. No military whatsoever.
2. Need more workers, lots of tiles to improve before we get Astronomy and lose the Colossus.
3. Only 2 new cities founded this round.

Sigh, I havent had the time to be very active nor play the round yet this weekend... I hope I can make it before deadline. I am going to update the OP now to reflect that we are playing 4th round.

My first decision about the game was that I would not settle more cities in the island where Sal has his newer possessions, because of the colonial maintenance.... Given that we have a lot more space to expand i decided to settle cities elsewhere....
Nothing like good news to start....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0133.jpg

I renegotiated later to a incense + dyes vs cooper + gpt... But that will last not much longer:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0135.jpg

I also decided to Research Calendar and Optics before starting Education... There are still some huts ( guarded , OFC ) and there is a decent chance of getting astro out of it. Made some spies for that.

Finally met KK....

Some more turns and I got a quest:

this quest has a choice between 2 promo options for naval units and 1 coin per harbor..... interesting. Used one of the cool BUG features of the F! screen to check how many harbors I needed to do:

Civ4ScreenShot0150.jpg

... and discovered that I only needed to finish the already queued harbors and more caravels.

Finished MoM

Some useless info:

Sal stole Lib from us and has Feud. But he's teching like a snail, so he's no danger at all. Once i got cannons and frigates this will be peace of cake. BTW people, we need better EP handling ..... if Sal is a target, there is no need to spread EP evenly to everyone.

About pros and cons.....

Pro: Got astro + Education and can even ambition to Lib steel. Sal is teching bad ( maybe he's trying to compensate my EP spending on him... bad idea , considering his huge colonial maintenance )... have got the circum navigation bonus.

Cons: Not enough workers... and not enough improvements.

Next turnset I'll gun to steel and start the iron storm on someone. The Ai garrisons are completely wacked ( some AI capitols are with 2 garrison units like the KK one ). BTW KK is looking a lot like a target to me... his capitol is interesting

So I did a shadow this round because I liked my save last round for peaceful expansion which is still my goal. Heres the basics of the round in case anyone is interested (think of this as the alternate universe).
Spoiler :
Start of the round, I did some diplomacy(make some resource trades, sell Monotheism to Louis and beg him for the rest of his gold, trade for calendar and start MoM in Hamburg.

I actually did no tech sales this round besides the start because the AIs never had any gold on hand.

Some interesting events:
760AD Music finished
860AD Paper finished
870AD "Coincidentally", I get circumnavigation the turn after Paper is done. Crazy.
880AD Angkor Wat done in Berlin
940AD MoM done in Hamburg
950AD Immediately burn the Artist for GA, revolt to pacifism
1000AD Trade for Machinery
1010AD University of Sankor done in Berlin
1090AD GA over (I stayed in pacifism)
1100AD Education is done
1190AD Trade for Feudalism

I got 4 new cities: Two barbarian cities and 2 settled cities. Some screenshots from my alternate universe:

Berlin with all its settled GPs:

Yes I settled 4 great people this round. The golden age + pacifism was pumping them out. There is another one due in six turns.

The new acquisitions starting with Angle:

My cities:

And their faith:

religionallthecoolcitiesaredoingit.jpg

There is a hindu missionary on a mission right now and another being built in Cologne right now. I'm getting the faith spread around quite nicely.

I've started building courthouses in the old world. The number of cities maintenance is starting to add up. After Berlin finishes its courthouse, the forbidden palace can be built, but I want it on the big continent so I need to wait for someone there to finish a courthouse. I'm thinking the Rice-Ivory-Horse city will be building it after it finishes that worker.

Definitely I am going to take KK up on one of those offers into war with Tokugawa. Plan for Liberalism is to take Constitution as it will be a huge boost to my economy. Research will be Liberalism to within a turn, Nationalism, finish Liberalism take Constitution and revolt immediately (I can't wait for Taj to come online to do it and I "blew" my Artist GA already). Meanwhile, go vertical growth rather than horizontal expansion as I've claimed the spots I really set out to get this round. Economy is not crashed, but it can become a super robust economy the second I get some more infrastructure in place especially courthouses and hindu buildings.

Oh, I forgot to mention, Saladin founded Christianity relatively early in the round and nobody else got Theology until much later (and it is Toku who will be at war soon) so I think there is a pretty fair chance we will be having a Hindu Apostolic palace.

After that, Drama has to be coming online ASAP. On the big continent, I'm not too far away from bumping borders with Louis and that is going to be a huge pain if I don't have Theaters.

Interestingly, none of the AIs have released a colony yet. I'm actually kind of shocked because I thought by now it would be colony central across the world.
