[R&F] Mongolia First Look

As to the correct name of Mongolia’s esteemed leader:

In Mongolian history, there were 4 types of Khans: 1. Great Grand Khaan - Ikh Ezen Haan. This title is reserved only for Chinggis Khan himself as the Founder of the Mongol Empire. The official title of Chinggis Khan in Mongolia is "Ikh Ezen Bogd Chinggis Khaan" - Great Grand Lord Khan. 2. Grand Khaan - Ikh Haan. This is the title of those khans who ruled the entire Mongol Empire after the death of Chinggis Khan. There were only 4 Grand Khaans. 3. Baga Khan - Junior Khan. This is the title of those Mongol khans who ruled various parts of Mongol Empire - Yuan, Golden Horde, or Ilkhanate and so on. 4. Khan - This is the title of those khans who ruled various provinces of Mongolia during the Manchu Qing - 16-19 centuries.

Anyway, it’s Ikh Ezen Bogd Chinggis Khaan. :)

So Khan isn't pronounced like James Caan, but rather Katherine Hahn.

In reference to all the discussion of the proper pronunciation of Timujin's title, you can say what it would sound like in Mongolian, Altaic, Turkic, Korean, Jurchen, or what have you, but out of Bean's mouth it will likely sound like nothing ever heard east of the Eddystone Light...

Yes, more like that. I asked a Mongolian friend when I was in Mongolia and they told me something roughly like this:

Chinggis
Ch - as in chair
i - as in kid
n - sun
g - gear
i - kid
s - sun

This is how Mongolians call him and how he should really be called. There are many other spellings and pronunciations but you can be 100% sure this is the genuine one.

edit : also the word Khaan. It means king, and pronounced Haan
H - as in hide
aa - as in arm (long vowel)
n - as in sun

if you use Khan instead of Khaan, it will be whole different word.

So you can keep trading with someone you are at war with?

The route is cancelled and you are prompted to choose a new destination for the Trader.

Interesting ... that's pretty much how we pronounce his name/title in German (it's spelled "Dschingis" over here).

Question is: How much difference is there between modern Mongolian and whatever the people in Genghis' time spoke?

While I doubt we can know for sure, if it's entered unrelated languages like German and Czech in a similar form to that still used in Mongolia we can probably infer that it would have been similar. The Europeans' only exposure to the word would have been as the title for Temujin.

The question in that case is why the English pronunciation diverged so far from the original while the form in mainland languages didn't.

I think quite a bunch of early research on the Mongols was covered by German historians/archaeologists, so, yeah...

So Genghis Khan's Agenda name is Horse Lord, according to the Livestream today.

Bit of a boring agenda title, but I guess it's functional. Wilhemina's "Billionaire" revolving around trade routes is a bit less so. (Then again we also have CdM's Black Queen agenda, which is not about African warrior queens potentially being in Civ, but rather about her dark reputation as an occultist of some description or other).

Would have preferred "Universal Ruler" and an agenda revolving around trade/diplomatic visibility/smaller armies for Genghis, but oh well. Better than "Backstab Averse" at least (Tomyris' agenda, ugh).

As another quibble of a more historical nature, it always bothered me that the Mongolian unique unit was named the Kheshig, after the bodyguards that *did not* fight with the main army. To quote Wikipedia: "They were distinct from the regular army and would not go to battle with them, instead staying back on guard duty. Their supreme commander was called the Cherbi." A better name for the military unit as portrayed being a major part of Mongolian forces would be after the Age of Empires II Mongolian unique unit, the Mangudai (more accurately named Manghud), which was both a tribe name and a name for a vanguard/light cavalry unit. As light cavalry were about 60% of the Mongolian cavalry forces, it would make sense for the unique unit for Mongolia to be named "Manghud" in future (I sincerely hope they don't name the Babylonian unique unit "Bowman" again either while we are at it).

In Russia we spell it the same way, except "a" in "khan" is short.

Does he even look like Khan? He was a ruthless barbarian, and here? We get a funny guy. At least in Civ V, he looked like a real man.

It may surprise you, but Civ VI leaders are supposed be carricatures and to look funny.

Not good, not good at all. I would literally replace most of them - to be consistent - all of them with some high quality static photographs at the cost of animations.

I strongly disagree. I like Civ6 leaders a lot! They are much better than Civ5 ones.

When you try making "realistic" people and their animations, any unnatural things in them look much more unnatural. That's called "uncanny valley" and Civ5 is much closer to it than Civ6.

Even the statue in Civ V's defeat screen gives me the creeps thanks to the uncanny valley.

While I disagree with that Darko guy, I also have quite different opinion on Civ VI leaders vs Civ V leaders. For me, Civ V leaders > Civ VI leaders.

If you need some reasons why, here they are. Askia, Harald Bluetooth, Enrico Dandolo, Harun al-Rashid, Erik XIV Gustavus Adolphus, Pedro II, Pocatello, and few others :P

Also, the leaders aren't mute for most of the game :P
