Montezuma's pointless Wars

Well this happened a while ago so I'm going off memory. I was playing as Ghenghis Khan and had conquered the Japenese a couple turn ago. This gave me almost all of the west of pangea but their was a narrow strip of land preventing me from getting to the western sea and that was the Incas. I eventually declared war and marched in with tanks and infantry. While I was doing this Montezuma was preparing for war against me. I had 2 civs on my right border. Alexander and Victoria. Montezuma was behind Victoria and was capped off to the east by water and the north by Alex. Eventually he declared war on me for no reason. I didn't know where he was at the time and got worried about losing cities so I made peace with the Incas even though I could have conquered them easily. I found out they were behind Victoria so I made a open borders agreement with her and invaded Monty. Eventually I conquered all of his cities on the continint accept for some on a far off island. I didn't feel like makeing my navy after I haden't had a single boat. I made peace. The point of this thread is that Monty had no way of reaching me because he had no open borders with Victoria or Alex.

Could it have been that the Incans had good relationship with Monte and they suckered him into declaring war? Do the AIs do that to eachoter?

This is Monty we're talking about, after all... what did the Incans do, say "hey, Monty, have you been at war with THEM, yet?"

Hey, it sometimes works for your advantage, too. Monty just declared war on Gandhi, my #1 rival and asked me to join! This was just a few turns before I was going to declare war on India and crush them with my Panzers. He couldn't have chosen a better timing!

After a few turns, I haven't done much more than pillage, because Gandhi's technically advanced troops are hard to crack, even though he has only a few of them in his minor cities, but Monty's already razed one city to the ground! Go, Monty, go!

In my continents game that i'm playing, 5 of us were on one continent, and Monty and Alex were on the other. Way early, Monty conquered Alex and he just came and said hi in a caravel. Yep, his score 3800, mine is first on my continent at 2900 and he's only a couple of techs behind us. This game is gonna be fun!
