Monthly Competitions Submissions Thread II

... this competition is not for judging the "Purpose" of a Unit, Building, Resource or Graphics Work based on whether a player uses it as much as it is for judging the Artistic Work itself in Friendly competition :)

I agree - it always annoys me when people say "I like unit X, but I wouldn't use it, so I won't vote for it" (even if they vote for me as a result!). People should vote for the unit they think is the best, because that's what the competition is about, not the one they think is the most useful or which is most useful to them personally.

Of course, that's just my view. People can vote however they like, naturally!

If people always voted for the prettiest work I would never win:)

Best could mean different things to different people, best idea, best graphics, best implementation, I love the sounds that Vuldacon and Plotinus use with their units, but I bet that they are not considered by all when voting for best unit.

I think you have to weigh all the work that went into it. Thought, having an idea, innovating, planning and implementation has to be considered along with the final visual.

Now git!...shotgun blast!!!

Another factor that affects voters is the previews. Some people will simply vote on a unit based solely on previews alone without downloading the Unit, viewing it in Flicster or seeing the unit in game...along with all pcx files and sounds.
Previews only provide simple unit animation basics and all differ in esthetics in game, not to mention sounds and all other images made for it.

Perhaps we should have a Best Preview Competition ;)

This. Complaining about how other people is undemocratic, and really just down-right rude

I always try to vote not just on the graphics but on the usefulness of the unit/resource/building.

I hope this is not getting out of hand but then nothing wrong with presenting opinions.

"Guidelines" are at least essential to state for competitions, whether or not they are followed.

Many of these recent posts are simply intended to serve as objectives to consider to keep the competitions Fair.

People can and do vote according to their own Guidelines and that seems to be an issue in these competitions.

Perhaps we need posted Guidelines for what to consider when voting on the various entries. Not they will be followed by everyone but they would at least serve to help remind voters what is being voted on.

Without understood Guidelines for what is actually being voted on, it leaves even the Winner wondering exactly what they won

That said, there is no way to force or enforce guidelines for voting... the guidelines can only be presented and then assumed to be followed... so in the end, even this post is a Moot Point :crazyeye:

I could be wrong, but I took wolf_brother's comment to mean he was aggreeing with you pounder and pointing out that no one should tell others how to vote becuase, as you said, best could mean different things to different people.

That's my opinion on the subject even if I missunderstood wolf's comments.

Cheers,

Nick

First, I have voted for both units and PCX artwork that I not only never used, but realistically, that I would never use, so utility is not my sole criterion. As I see it, Artwork, and I include both the units and PCX files as Artwork, is supposed to evoke a response of some form from the viewer, be it good or bad. When I see Goldfool's barn, it brings back memories of that month on my uncle's dairy farm when in high school, memories of when I was not dealing with pain on a continuous basis as I am now. When I see Kyriakos's Byzantine buildings, it touches the historian that I am, bringing to mind Belisarius the Inevitable General and Narses the Improbable One, of the abomination and greed of the 4th Crusade, and the last desperate defense of Constantinople in 1453. Those are the responses evoked. When I see the combative farmhand, my only response is "a lot of work, that." With respect to the Tie Fighter, it is more like, Civilizations is for the past to the present, not far into the future. No emotions, no real interest.

To move this back into topic...
I nominate mah walls terrain:
