What are some good movies with a depressing atmospheres? I'm thinking of movies like Children of Men and Der Untergang.

That's the kinda thing I'm talking about. Lots of gray, people getting killed, buildings being destroyed, an all around we're screwed feeling. What are some other movies have scenes like that?

I found Dark City to have a quite depressing atmosphere.

Come and See (1985). I recommend Affliction (1997) too, but it's not a war movie if that's all you're looking for.

Lilja-4-Ever will make you ask yourself, if you really want to live in this world.

Tim Roth directed a small film called the War Zone which was incredible bleak and dealt with some hard issues, just as Lilja did.

Lars Von Triers Breaking The Waves and Dancer In The Dark are journeys of hopeless optimism in enviroments drenched in human cruelty.

A post in this thread has caused me to re-watch Threads again. This movie is really haunting. And I agree it is one of the most depressing movies ever. It's on youtube, I recommend watching.

The only other movie that may be more depressing has also been mentioned in this thread. The road. I like apocalyptic movies for whatever reason. But this movie was so bleak. It was too bleak for there to be any sense to the plot. If nothing can grow, there is little point in scrounging around for any remaining food. You aren't going to live long. Best just to kill yourself. I think apocalyptic movies need some sense of hope for the characters.

Right now I'm watching the Day after. Although this film isn't as depressing as it should be, it deserves mention because of the ending. I'm rewatching it again on youtube right now. I highly recommend watching this movie. The first half of threads is better (the movie falls apart in the second half), but this is worth checking out.

I heard about the antichrist, I do want to check it out. Although I wonder what kind of person that makes me if I want to see such a film. Is it morally right to see such a film?

it's not like it's "serbian movie".

it's actually an amazingly good movie about the cruelty inherent in all life. (as perceived by the writer/director)

Brazil was pretty depressing overall.

Spoiler :
Especially with the 180 turn at the end.
