MSMD: How to Create a Mod (video demo)

I found that if the video and audio went out of sync, I just needed to pause it and play again (I also jigged the time bar by a second).

This is some really great stuff! I think the biggest help that this has provided is just telling us where all of these various files are located! It inspires confidence that I can just browse all of the XML files to find out what files has what data and change it at my discretion. And if it doesn't work, I can always go back to the video to see what I did wrong...

I just thought I'd also comment on the video. While viewing, my pagefile usage tripled. It went from 700MB to 2.1 GB. I'm not sure why, but maybe adobe has some type of movie player (like adobe reader for pdfs) for this format that we could download to maybe take the strain off of our computers? Other than that, I'd hate to ask you to make it available as a download for media player, because you are doing this just for the heck of it, so having it at all is fine enough for me. I just wish that it wasn't so hard to watch your hard work!

Thank you so much for doing this Kael. I've learned a tremendous amount about modding civ and am really looking forward to learning more and putting another one together besides my shiny new Colbert Nation Mod.

Give a man a FfH2 and he plays for the next 8 months. Teach a man to Mod Civ and he can play forever!

FRoriz5: You'll need a DDS plugin. You can get one here http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html

Wow!!, Thank you very much Kael "oh lord of the Modders"

I do also have some problems... I think that I can play Crysis for longer than watch this vids, but they are worth it.
Are you really planning on a Python tutorial?? :please:
And perhaps events?

Sorry I keep asking, its only that I got excited :D

the videos help a ton but about two thirds of the way through the screen went whit and the sound kept getting ahead of the video...but i still got the gist of it.... when i made my own mod i'm getting problems
i only edited the pedia, civs, leader heads, buildings, and units but for some reason whenever i load the mod everything works fine until i try to start a game... when it loads the map it stops at the "finishing" part and then has an error and exit:mad:

i love the videos though so thanks ... p.s. what do the schematics do and are they easily changed?

Someone correct me if i'm wrong here... :)

peteandbill, I'm pretty sure the schematics define what you can change in the actual xml files. As in, you can create your own tags there, for example creating a tag where you get, i dunno, improved relations when you have a certain civic. To edit them though i think you need to the sdk, and use C++. I use the schema's to figure out what tags i can use in a particular xml file.

I just registered on Civ Fanatics to thank you for these video documentations and encourage you continue with letting you know there are people who really appreciate this.

I probably never have the stomach to create a serious mod or even part of one. But I was curious if one needs crazy technical skills to do it. As it seems, there is no witchcraft involved but just loads of creativity and hard work.

Besides, I love FFH2, please never stop working on it.

People like you have my respect!

SDK is the System Developer's Kit. Not knowing C++, I haven't had much more than a half a glance at the thread, but i gather it's the source code to everything but the core of the game.

As I said, i don't know C++, but I'm fairly sure you can't use notepad, but need a program that can compile the code (although i'm not sure what that means either :D)

This Thread should help

My version of Photoshop doesn't give me the option of saving as a DDS.

Welcome to CivFanatics!

You may want to do some google searches to see if you can find plugins for DDS files with photoshop. If I recall (its been a long time since I did it) I needed to install a plugin to get DDS support.

edit: oops jernau beat me to it (and even provided the link!).

Help! I click on the links on the first page and the screen that comes up is blank. Any suggestions?

I noticed that a few times to, but its inconsistent. Im wondering if only a fixed amount of people can view it at the same time. All I can suggest is to give it a few minutes and try again.

Thanks. I'll try that and see what happens:goodjob:
