Our reporter, Mr. James Fox, has gone to South Africa (SA), a country ravaged by war and dictatorships. However, this country is now becoming an economic powerhouse with huge economic development in a very short time. Mr. James (J) will interview the Finacial Minister of South Africa, Mr. Mehmet (M).
J: Hello Mr. Mehmet.
M: Hello. I am very happy to be here with you and to explain you the SA economy.
J: My first question is how your economy has managed to grow so much over the past 3 years?
M: I have been Finacial Minister in both the Pohamba and Mulhara governments. Mr. Pohamba invited me to become his finacial minister after the elections in Namibia and the introduction of the free market economy. Mr. Mulhara, the current President of South Africa, asked me to remain finacial minister since I had done an amazing work.
But in reality, it is the South African people who can claim the success to this amazing economic miracle. The South African people work very, very long hours and very hard. They have suffered huge hardships in order to recover from the war.
Foreign companies saw that trait of the South African people, and were encouraged by loans given by the Government to support investment in SA economy, and decided to invest into the economy. New factories are created every day, cities are re-build and the SA industry grows very fast.
J: Can you tell me how much your industry, and in general your economy, has grown those past 3 years?
M: It has grown very, very, very much. It's almost an economic miracle. In 2509, when the Blood - Namibian war ended, our Industry was at 12 points and our GDP was 0. Now, in 2511, our industry is at 45 points, and our GDP at 1487. In less than three years our Industry has almost increased by 4 times and you can really see the growth in the economy and the growth of our GDP from 0 to 1487. And we are not over yet. This year, we shall spend 530 billion SA Rubles in the economy. We have the ambition to become the largest economy in the world. And we shall achieve it.
J: But, I suppose, that not everything is good, right?
M: Indeed. Althought our industry has grown, our national income is still small compared to other countries. But I am sure that we can solve this problem. Also, because of the threat of war, for example the Mozambiquen civil war, we have to keep a very, very large standing army that damages a bit our economy and also scares off investors. However, we believe that more foreign investor will come and invest in SA since our government has shown that it can handle crisis in foreign policy with diplomacy. In fact, now more and more foreign investors realize that SA is a very stable country, where their money will pay off.
J: I will now ask you a question that is not purely economical, but it is connected to the economy. Tourism in South Africa. What can attract people to visit South Africa?
M: There are many things that can attract tourist. In Africa, there is the Namibian Desert. In the Capital, there is the National Culture Museum and the National Park. In America, there are very beutyfull cities with huge markets and great beaches.
There is a lot of Tourism in SA lately and we are happy about it, as we want to share our culture with other people.
J: Can you tell us what are your plans for the future and a few last words?
M: Our ambition is to become the largest economy of the world and grow more and more. We believe that economic development can solve other issues, like social issues. We hope that the SA economy will grow even more.
J: Thank you for answering my questions.
M: I thank you.
