Mump4 - AWD Standard Pangaea

I hope to try some more starts tonight.

I was thinking of going for the Dutch. They quite strong but we really will need the GLib. I will be looking for a start with a second city strong in shields for the needed wonder. They are Agri and coastal which helps minimize the front.

Previous attempts I have been getting a lot of early contacts. I was thinking 60% water and see if that helps any.

I assume it should be pangaea again - I mean that is what you want to win at right? I mention this because of course Seafaring makes continents more attractive for this civ and would choose that if we are not specifically playing pangaea.

I could try Iroquois or Chinese, but these are played so often that I would like to do something different and the Dutch are underplayed for their AW strength.

I think that with a variant having only been beaten once by a very excellent team with a good civ and a great start at least terrain wise, we shouldn't get greedy and try to beat it with a bad AW civ. The Dutch are an ok AW civ, they really only have one trait and good UU. It seems to me that an AWE training game is the time for obscure civs, but AWD standard pangaea is time to decide on a stud (Iros, Celts, Mayans, Sumerians), then look for steaky starts.

(I've probably already voiced this opinion of mine 3 times in this thread so I'm sorry if you're tired of hearing it, just ignore it, I'm fine with whatever civ I guess, I just had to say this.)

Anyway, I'm still interested in this game and I'll play after whatever start we choose.

I found the last one, but that didn't work out so great.

I will not be trying at all this weekend as today is my birthday and my girlfriend is just getting back from vacation and I haven't seen her since Sunday AM. Needless to say, I plan on spending A LOT of time with her.

I have had real problems finding a start that seemed survivable at Deity. A lot had no iron nearby which I went for first.

Here is a slightly different start. It has elephants so I was thinking of the Statue of Zeus and went for Masonry first - then for Warrior Code - we need some offense I realized.

Obviously the capitols growth is huge growing every 3 turns without a granary at +7 food. Shields are more the problem.

Another reason I liked this start is that we got 2 promotions to elite for our Enkidu.

Turn log:
3600 BC: met Carthage very early so built 4 Enkidu first. Very early GA of course. Survived 10-12 warriors and none since.
Aprox 2750 BC: Met Russia and have not been rushed yet.
Played 30 turns.

If we play this, my advice is to change the settler to an Archer and build one more (or two?) Enkidu as well before the settler. We have to not only have enough troops to defend our cities, but also have to worry about pillaging.

For tech we go for Alphabet, Mathematics and go for Zeus. Our capitol defends by building units (and settlers too) while the other city is working on the prebuild. Hopefully we build more cities to the north Carthage attacks from straight south and Russia was observed to the east. They sent a spear to pillage but it moved back when I was defending a wheat and the elephants. They may send it back.

The idea of course is that even if we don't get Iron right away, an ancient cav army will help us to grab it. I think the odds of winning it may still be against us, but that is just simply true for AWD - especially Pangea. We also have early cats to handle the annoying Carthage UU.

It is the best start out of quite a number that I have gotten (though I have been unlucky I think).

MM note: Elephant irrigated in 2 so next turn we can move a citizen to it to get another 2 shields the turn after (rather than waiting until after it is irrigated that is).

Lack of shields and hills for iron may be a problem. Also having only 2 ivory means we'll probably get beat to SoZ. But the shape of the land could be favorable, like if we have a narrow front, and the food is plentiful, so it's worth a shot.

If this start doesn't work out then I can run mapfinder sometime soon and find us some cows.

I am not sure what are odds for SoZ are, but I think it worth going for if try for it straight away. Ideal would be to get the Hero Epic as backup by getting a leader. Agree iron may be a problem, a lot depends on how things look. Mumpulus, do you want to start a new thread for this? it is really Mump5. I (or you) could post the save and picture with the mini-report.
