I posted this in the Māori Discussion Thread, but should probably add it here. The soundtrack of the First Look: Māori video featured two songs and a haka.
1. First song, heard in most of the video, is "Me He Manu Rere":
(Honestly, I've never heard of this song before now. I had to Google the lyrics to find out what it was. It seems to be reasonably well-known, although there are certainly better known songs that are similar. Still, it's a nice love song from around the 1920s.)
2. Then the video features the well-known "Ka Mate" haka:
(Interestingly, you can hear music added to the vocal performance in the First Look video. It'll be interesting to see if or how this haka is arranged musically. A good example of this is "Tarakihi", a centuries-old haka set to classical crossover music.)
3. Finally at the end there's a short excerpt from "Pōkarekare Ana"
(Probably the most well-known Māori song. I'd love to see this translated over the different eras.)
It'll be interesting to see if or how they incorporate all of these songs/haka into an overall theme. Hopefully there's another KnorrMusic video which shows the final theme across different eras.

Its possible that different songs and haka appear as different tracks in the soundtrack alongside the theme proper, as with the Zulu songs and other civs’ tunes.

I showed the First Look video to my mother. She recognised this song from having learned it at school, which means that a lot of Māori would have done the same. Shame I hadn't learned it before now.
Anyways, I've had this song stuck in my head all day. Thanks, Firaxis, for teaching me another Māori song.

Thanks. That Maori singing is simply great, and I love how the themes manage to sound sometimes epic (ancient, industrial) and sometimes cheerful (atomic).

From what I'm assuming from @Canterbury's assessment of the theme, there are three Māori songs in the theme, so I'm assuming Geoff Knorr only previewed parts of the themes.
Still waiting for what Geoff Knorr's going to say about the inspiration for the themes...
The Atomic version makes me feel like I'm going to church, though.

Wow, first time I've heard a musical arrangement for "Ka Mate". I'm excited and nervous for how the final theme turns out. Especially the Industrial Era theme. That has some really nice possibilities. Hope it turns out well. I loved the Atomic Era rendition of "Pōkarekare Ana". It reminds me of the Māori music I grew up with.
Looks like they're focusing on "Ka Mate" and "Pōkarekare Ana" for the theme throughout the different eras. Maybe the haka leads into the song. I didn't hear "Me He Manu Rere" at all, so maybe it's an alternative Ancient Era song. Kinda like Australia's civ music, with "Waltzing Matilda" as the main theme, and both ambient didgeridoo music and an instrumental version of "Click Go The Shears" in the Ancient Era.

On a side note, I'm happy they found a kapa haka group to do the vocals. I'm surprised they didn't have a group in the US, they had to get one in from Vancouver. At least they didn't have to fly one in from New Zealand or London. Great work, Te Tini a Māui.

I was wondering if this was a thing or if it was a novel innovation. It's such a powerful effect, underlaying the peaks of the shouting with booming bassy orchestral components.

^ It's not the first time a haka has been set to music. I've mentioned in earlier posts about "Tarakihi", which combines a centuries-old haka with classical crossover music and operatic singing. I was hoping for something like this in Civ 6, and I'm nervous and excited about actually getting it.

That EDM Atomic version...
The beat fits, and i think is good for a change and variety from more soundtracky themes in Atomic, however I hope it is only for a short time on the full team. Going full hardcore might be too much.
Have to say how much I love these first listen videos showing the instruments involved in each piece. It has been the structure chosen for mapping the civ IV themes since the beginning (ancient= basic instruments and singing, medieval = more complex instruments, industrial = orchestral, and atomic = electrionic soundbase tracks), but being shown which instruments are involved, specially for ancient and medieval, is great. I whish they could build as well videos like these for the vanilla and R&F themes.
Yeah it's always cool to see period instruments too, and they contribute a lot to the distinctive sound of the Medieval/Renaissance eras in game. I love me a vielle.

This theme is very Great! Especially the Haka, i got chill when hear the Industrial theme (can't wait for the atomic ver)

Interesting. I haven't heard much of Maori music before and look forward to hearing the full theme.
Oh, the EDM Atomic theme is 100% appropriate--but it also relegates Hungary to my least favorite Atomic theme, and I already dislike most of them.
As you say, maybe it won't be the entire theme...Similar threads
