One of the things that bothers me about Vanilla Civ is that the music for the modern and future eras is identical. Also I'm not much of a fan of the modern music, yet I really like the music for all the other eras. So I have decided to give unique music to the future and modern eras, and also most likely replace some of the more annoying tracks in the default selection.

Here is where I come to a problem. Outside of 60s Hippy stuff like Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Marley and some classical or political artist like the Dead Kennedys or Immortal Technique I just don't listen to much music. So I need suggestions for some good music for the modern and future era. My original thought was to use a song from Hendrix's blues album, but I couldn't find anything that worked.

So please post suggestions with links to You Tube to help me find some good music for Legends of Revolution :)

For a reference I'm considering using this song below as a track for the future era:

Amadeus Rock

But I'm not sure that would work really well.

Another song I'm pretty sure I will use is Coolio's Gangster's Paradise, again for the future era.

So in short, I have no specific style or thing I am looking for. Just good background music to replace the crap that's currently there, and to split the modern and future era. I'm having particular trouble coming up with stuff for the modern era, as I said I thought Hendrix would have some good blues stuff, but after listening to the whole album there wasn't anything that seemed "background music" enough to fit.

You asked for music suggestions, here goes

Fluke

System of a Down

Tool

Three recommendations, I think that Fluke might be the most appropriate, though I assume you can separate the vocals from the instrumental and if so, all three have potential if you ask me. There is a section in the SOAD song that has what I believe is some sort of russian lute (really unsure though, correct me if I am wrong) and I think it would do well

Please consider the rules for piracy ;).
This is sure not legal (only if you use small parts, i guess).

Ontopic: I would not suggest using songs with singing, it turns the concentration away from the game.

Except for 1/2 the soundtrack is songs with singing, hell the entire middle ages era soundtrack is vocals

So no, you're flatly wrong.

Be nice.

The medieval tracks are gregorian chants...rather hard to tell what exactly they're singing, and it's rather easy to tune it out; it's more choral and less lyrical. But he has a point: I consider that "ooooh, the peasants, yah" song to be most distracting (and it's a Modern track...not one of my favourites either).

It's been my experience that there are few people who are ever flatly wrong. Slightly wrong, yes, but there's always a kernel of truth to what they're saying. Not that I haven't known at least ONE person who was wrong more times than he was right...no names, since I actually rather like the guy.

Besides, it was just a suggestion, no need to bite his head off for it.

Can't we just sample in full and change nothing? It would only be a "sample" and sampling has been established as legal IIRC :crazyeye:

Ontopic: I think some movie soundtracks go really well during the era the movie represents. For example Gladiator and Troy work great in the Classical era. Possibly tracks from the 3 Matrix soundtracks for the modern or future eras.

Really? Damn, haven't played a long time :D.

But it would be a problem, if the music is more in the foreground. I really can't say, what music is good music for a game :dunno:.

You could always check out the classical section of music at newgrounds. Sure, there might be a lot of garbage, but there are some good ones. Plus, everything is under Creative Commons license, so you can use them without legal repercussions.

I'll happily keep an eye out for fairly low-lyric music for the modern/future era.

To be honest, I get tired of music like System of a Down, Tool and so forth. It may not be a popular opinion. IMO the Amadeus Rock track linked above is too irregular to be pleasant to listen to as background music. The artists who play that sort of music are very talented but I just can't get into appreciating the music.

I would suggest that you look for music from some other computer games that are from a modern setting, perhaps games of the strategy or simulation type. SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4, for example, have excellent music that could suit your taste. If you're looking for a little more cultural variety, you could also try Command and Conquer: Generals, which has good Chinese and Middle Eastern music with some modern twist.

I have a couple of royalty-free music files that could fit the modern or future era.

Unfortunately these are only 96kbps but for that bitrate they sound pretty good.

Use them if you like them. They may be a little bit too airy for your taste. I'll keep my eye out for more anyway.

By the way, what bitrate are we aiming for? I'm guessing a minimum of 128, and no more than 192, but you can always compress to 128 from anything higher anyway.

What sort of genre/s and tempos are we looking for?

Nothing in particular, just decent era apropriate music that can play in the background.

I'm just concerned that if we have a mix of genres it could be a bit displeasing to listen to as background music.

As bad as some of civ's later era music is, it at least is mostly one genre so it doesn't sound inconsistent.

I don't know what could be defined as modern music, as since the beginning of the 20th century so many genres have flourished and the diversity now is extraordinary.

Basically I'm looking for music that is vocals-free or very near it.

dangercollie.com seems unavailable for me :dunno:.

Imho the sounds in the .zip are good, but the other songs have a ..."big presence"...ah, don't know how to call it...i think, this music would be in the foreground in the game...i'm unprecise, i guess.
