Mutant NES: The Rising

Bloodhound likes to get close to national guard encampments, lurking in the woods outside their chain link fences, one of the guards at the watchtower, she can see him.

Recently demoted, his wife was mad, used to be on guard duty at the Gainesville national guard headquarters, now he8217;s running road blocks on I-75.

She8217;s been marching for a week and a half, eating deer; Raul8217;s been turning rocks into potatoes. She had complained that he could just turn it into New York strip or caviar, Raul had smiled and said, 8220;I8217;m not that good, besides, this itself,8221; he raised his hands to the sky, 8220;is manna from heaven.8221;

Bloodhound had little patience for his religious references. At least August never talked about that bullcrap.

The guard on the watchtower, he used to guard high security mutants8230; psychics8230; more powerful than she was, mind controllers and heavy duty telekinetics, nobody you would want to meet in a dark alley.

She could see the enterance, on the edge of town, lightly defended, no chain link fence, just an average building. The basement, the whole trick was the secrecy. Dangerous mutants.

August is a dangerous mutant; she likes him just fine, the handsome mulatto boy who had saved her life. She guesses she8217;s been hanging out with them long enough to be classified dangerous herself.

She heads back to the woods to tell the rest.

-

Seven people in trenchcoats and sunglasses, red white and blue bandanas covering their faces, stand at the edge of town, near the airport and Newnan8217;s Lake. The new armory is at the city limits, built just for the disaster.

Dangerous mutants, Raul hadn8217;t wanted to help. But August kept saying, 8220;Any one of us would be locked up here.8221;

He had a point.

Raul swings open the front door; the place is like a fire station, except with a M1A2 in the big open space instead of a fire truck.

8220;Who are you?8221; one of the guards finally approaches them. Everyone is out, there are high profile targets in Gainesville, nobody is here during the day, they are manning roadblocks, looking for muties.

8220;I plead the fourth,8221; Raul says, catching the guy as he falls asleep.

Bloodhound runs up to the door, she remembers it clearly from the guard8217;s memory. She remembers the code.

The door slides open.

Guards at the far side of a hall, Raul makes sure their guns don8217;t work, and after a few futile clicks they give up. Lightning flashes down the hall.

The Liberation Front has arrived.

August blows up the next door, the guards are unconscious, their shirts turned to lead.

Ricky is already at the far end of the next hall, slamming through the door, the guards on the other side collapse to the ground,

The elevator, Lucy punches in the code.

8220;There are a lot more guards downstairs,8221; she tells them, 8220;But most of them are scared of the inmates, really superstitious,8221; she smiles, 8220;easy prey.8221;

8220;How long until the cops get here?8221; August asks.

8220;No telling,8221; she informs him.

The elevator door slides open.

8220;Any one of us would be locked up here,8221; August had said.

Ricky charges down the hall, Single bound flies in front of him, slamming headlong into one of the guards before Ricky knocks the rest aside and bashes the door open, they have made it to the detention center.

A hail of bullets deflects off of Ricky8217;s arms, right back into the shooters.

Everything is calm, quiet, the hallway branches off in two directions, the Sandman joins Raul and Alice to the right and the rest charge down the other side.

At the far end of the hall, Raul starts turning doors into sand, turning restraints into dust. Simon puts them to sleep for a moment as the group runs down the hall.

On the other side they come across the cell of Al E. Gator.

August looks to Ricky, 8220;getting in the way of the plan,8221; he sticks out his tongue.

Ricky smashes the door open, Lucy says, 8220;I don8217;t have a plan.8221;

8220;Me neither,8221; says Ricky.

On the back of the wall, a pair of eyes opens.

Ricky pulls the cell open.

And is abruptly slammed across the hallway through the next door. The mutant in that one, a manic depressive telekinetic was huddled in the corner, weeping when the door to his cell flew open.

Raul runs to the middle of the hall, back towards the elevator, doors turn to sand behind him, dangerous mutants, Simon follows him, putting the captives to a short sleep, a minute or so, a power nap, leave them groggy, they don8217;t need any trouble.

Ricky is not so lucky. He throws Al through another door in the hall, August and Lucy dodge the heavy bodies as they fly.

Single bound slams into the Gator, feet first, top speed. The blow knocks him back over before he can recover and sends him through the wall of the cell.

The Mountain and the little guy exit the doorframe, they start following August and Lucy back to the middle. As they pass the next door from behind them the scaly mutant holds one of the doors that they had torn off. He throws it at Ricky.

Who smashes it aside, bashing open another cell.

Raul stands at the center of the hall, watching August and Lucy run up, the battle continues behind them, Ricky throws the Gator through a wall, the Gator retaliates, occasionally Single Bound would leap into the fracas, before bounding out quickly.

Telekinetics are starting to slam open doors from the outside that they couldn8217;t manage from behind them or alone. The elevator comes down, the little man flies down the hall in a single bound, Ricky throws the Gator all the way down the hall.

8220;Let them deal with it,8221; August says to him, Ricky runs into the elevator.

Quiet again, elevator music plays.

At the top of the elevator, the door slides open, on the other side, across a small room, a thick steel plate slams down.

Ricky punches it, nothing, 8220;It8217;s got to be two or three feet thick,8221; he says.

-

One of the national guardsmen lies on the floor, watches the security doors engage, he can hear the sirens getting closer. A thud on the other side.

Another.

The guardsman smiles.

The door turns to sand in front of him.

On the other side the elevator dings, a scaly mutant grins inside, launching himself out.

Ricky smashes him back into the elevator, Al picks himself up and shrugs.

A swarm of flies, all through the building, more and more of them.

Raul frowns, 8220;Let8217;s get out of here.8221;

Lucy runs up at the front, with bewildered insects falling all around her, the bugs still swarm and bite into Raul, he swings on them as he flees the building. The others follow out the door, heads down in the onslaught.

On the street they see a van, Raul shoves his kerchief into the keyslot, a flash and a turn later the door swings open. Alice jumps into the drivers seat and slides open the back doors. High speed chase in a minivan, that sounds like fun, she thinks. Not much choice with a group this size.

The sirens are getting very close. The engine cranks.

8220;There8217;s a juicebox on my seat,8221; Lucy complains.

Ricky is the last out the door, swinging at flies, but also fistfighting with the Gator, throwing him back into the armory, thinking 8216;this was a mistake,8217; he runs for the van.

On the other side of the armory the gator flies clear out into the swamp.

Raul is trying to figure out how much of a mistake this was, terrible or catastrophic. Dangerous mutants, he frowns, he doesn8217;t even know what to expect anymore.

And it speeds off down the road, sirens chase them.

Predictably, the wheels of the police cars all turn to glass.

...Kara's never going to update this is he?

Brah in less than a week I take the the most important annoying exam evah. If I pass it and the subsequent oral assessment, screening and background check I could very well get my dream job. Want to know what the pass rate of the written exam is? 40-45%. Want to know how many people actually make it past the evaluation panel to the oral assessment? 25%. Want to know how many people of those 25% get hired? 5%.
But guess what? Because Barack Freaking Obama has decided to be a little baby and give in to Republican teapartying hysteria and freeze discretionary spending more likley it's 0% this year. But hey lets take it anyway just becuz WTH else do I do with my life rite?

So in terms of priorities you guys are like the last on my list of things to do. The update will come because I have a 1/3 of it done already, but it'll come when I'm good and ready.

fsot?

just a guess, I haven't done the setup work for that particular exam, if that is the case, then they're doing it twice more this year right? I mean, I don't graduate until next spring and was just going to take it to get an idea of what to expect.

P.S. because of the manner in which said discretionary spending freeze is being administered it will not amount to a hiring freeze. private convo I suppose.

You wouldn't recruit for core government agencies out of discretionary spending ever... it wouldn't be discretionary to begin with.

They rode in silence for a long time, finally Aubrey broke it, telling him that she was going to stop and get some food.

Set was hungry.

He got out of the car as she pulled into the parking lot; the big glowing sign said *Alice’s Restaurant* she reached the door and waited but when she turned to look Set was nowhere to be seen.

In moments he was in a place to find a quick meal; the thug saw a defenseless teen in new clothing, a quick meal. Set turned with inhuman speed and caught the ‘would be’ attacker by the throat, a moment later he dropped the bloodless corpse. It would not do to leave evidence of his feeding, especially now, he felt the blood strengthen all his limbs forging anew his ancient power.

Rain had left the soil soft in stretch of trees along the interstate; a fairly deep hole took him only a few minutes to dig with the folding camping shovel he had taken from Aubrey’s apartment. The face of the victim disappeared under dirt as Set filled the hole, scattering leaves, and then sprinted towards the lights of the gas stations at the exits of the interstate. One quick stop and he looked up to see the sign in front of him again he wondered if Aubrey would be mad.

It had only taken ten minutes for Set to perform his grisly task, he was pulsing with energy. He tossed the shovel into the back seat and scrubbed the dirt from his nails in the bathroom before sitting down at the booth with Aubrey.

“Where the hell have you been?” She asked angrily.

“I needed an energy drink” he said waving the can and smiling at her. “I’ll drive the rest of the night; you need to get some sleep, I can’t really drive during the day”

“Well don’t sneak off on me like that, I was a little worried.” She said and smiled back at him. “I’m starving, I already ordered.”

Set ate a sandwich and finished his energy drink while she chowed down; Aubrey was a tiny girl no more than forty seven kilograms and 157 centimeters tall, but man could she put away some food. They paid with cash and got in the car Set enjoyed the feel of the vehicle as he maneuvered it back onto the interstate.

Aubrey leaned the seat back and got comfortable, “Be careful with my baby” she said and slowly drifted to sleep. It was near midnight, there were a few hours of driving ahead, the music played softly as Set sped down the highway.

You see I cannot be forsaken
Because I'm not the only one
We walk amongst you feeding, raping
Must we hide from everyone?

Sunrise was about an hour away when Set reached out and touched her shoulder, “Wake up Aubrey, I need you to take over driving for a while.”

“Oook” she said groggily rubbing her eyes as she leaned her seat upright. Aubrey unlocked the small door and took from the glove box a cylinder and a CD case; she slid the CD into the small slot on the radio, and from the cylinder she took a cigar. “I hope you don’t mind” she said as she sparked lighter and lit the end of the cigar.

Smoke filled Set’s nostrils and he smiled as he recognized the smell, an ancient herb, he had smoked before. Ten thousand years ago it was smoked in the land now known as India, and he had found it growing plentifully worldwide. “Let me hit that” he said, and she passed him the blunt.

Set crawled into the back seat grabbing a pillow and covered himself with a blanket “I’m gonna get a few hours of sleep, but the sun can hurt my skin so wake me up if something happens and please be careful.” He wasn’t too worried, the car had heavily tinted windows and Aubrey was a good driver; he fell asleep thinking about the view from the side of a mountain.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set looked into the southern sky from the spur of mount Parnassus, the fire burned behind him and the most beautiful sound he had ever heard rose slowly up the slopes and he could feel it surrounding him filling him with light. Forward to the edge and he looked down on the winding path that snaked back and forth up the mountain side; there were three of them, the moon light reflecting off their hair.

The music grew louder as they climbed higher, where could it be coming from? It was as if it was coming from everything around him, he could feel the vibrations moving along his skin coming from his very bones. He stood stock still watching them until they stopped beside him, he could feel the words of their song now, for he was now certain that it was they who made the music that so moved him. Sisters, triplets, so beautiful that Set’s breath was taken away their hair looked like spun silver shining in the moonlight; the song grew quiet, as if it were now far away echoing to them over the valley, and they approached him.

They spoke, their voices were musical, and each spoke one word in turn. “We.” “Are.” “Muses.” The beautiful sisters told Set that they did make the music it was a divine gift to praise Apollo the god of the Sun. They explained that they had travelled hundreds of miles to Delphi in search of a prophet who could see the future and the will of Apollo. Set told them that he also served Apollo and the unbelievably beautiful triplets told him of their journeys.

“Welcome, friends, to the temple of the Sun!” said a loud voice from the other side of the great fire.

Set and the girls turned and approached the newcomer; they introduced themselves and waited for the robed figure to speak. It reached up and lowered the hood of the robe another woman, hair as dark as the Muses was light, she had dark eyes lined in black face paint and glistening olive skin. The overall effect was beautiful, she stood in stark contrast to the sisters, but like them had a tangible sense of power about her. She smiled at them as she said “I’m Cassandra”

Cassandra was the high priestess of Apollo and the Oracle of the temple at Delphi. She was gifted with the ‘sight’ people travelled from all over the world to make a sacrifice to the sun god and to hear the words of the Oracle. She was young and beautiful, and more than a little vain due to her position and power but she helped Set willingly and as she held his hand smoke swirled in her eyes and they turned black.

In a strange high voice Cassandra called out “Your coming is like the footsteps of the titans, you bring such power that this land will never again be as it was. From the ashes a phoenix shall arise, but beware he will sear the flesh from your bone. Ye victors will be as Gods who walk the earth, your names will echo in the minds of men to the ending of this world and beyond.” She released his hand and the blackness receded from her eyes she shook as she looked at him.

“Thank you child; I will think on your words,” Set said and started to turn away to sit by the fire Cassandra caught his hand again and looked at him.

“There is one more thing, your path is north, you won’t have to
look far to find your purpose here,” she told him then she turned and to no one in particular said. “Will someone bring me some wine?”

He looked north up the slope of the mountain towards the summit, “I’m going to go tonight, I wish I had more time to spend here now, I will return.” He said and gathered his strength.

“Good.” “Bye.” “Set.” The muses sang to him, he assured them that he would see them again and began to climb to the peak. He made it to the top in a few minutes and looked off into the distance as far north as he could see, the land looked peaceful. Miles in the distance he could see light dancing crackling and sparking, Set took off at high speed towards the light show.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No sunlight shone through the car when Set awoke he uncovered himself and clambered into the passenger seat of the car. Thunder rumbled in the distance, it looked as if there was going to be a rough storm tonight, the sun wasn’t down but it was late in the afternoon.

“So are you gonna tell me what that,” she pointed a thumb into the backseat, “was all about?”

Set hesitated before answering, “It,” he paused again “It is a long story”

“So you don’t like the sun. What are you a vampire or something?” she said with a laugh.

“Apparently not that long,” Set said dryly…

Update 4

Feb12th to Feb 26th

US Government Strikes Back

In the wake of the massive upsurge in violence and destruction on the part of both mutants and anti-mutant forces and attacks against US military forces itself the federal government had no choice but to respond harshly.

Congress convened and issued a repeal of habeus corpus. The fighting was classified as a domestic insurrection and President Obama was granted emergency war powers to “restore tranquility to the nation.”

He acted immediately to mobilize the US army in addition to the already mobilized National Guard forces and placed all state militia under federal control. US troops abroad in Germany, South Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan and elsewhere were withdrawn and redeployed domestically in the United States.

For the first time in American history tanks and armored personnel carriers and heavily armed soldiers patrolled the streets of major American cities. The border with Mexico was entirely sealed off with US forces being considered a dangerous liability for mutant infiltration sparking outrage from the Mexicans calling it a violation of NAFTA. In the North the US worked with the Canadians to thoroughly investigate all cross border traffic.

Modest press censorship was also introduced as the government reviewed press releases regarding mutant activities censoring newspapers and tv channels considered to be pro-mutant or sympathetic to the mutant cause. The media was further prohibited from reporting on mutant attacks or successes to prevent panic among the general populace as had occurred in the past. The internet proved to be more problematic. Websites were taken down and a number of government hackers employed to take down sites not in US servers. Congress also speedily passed the Internet Kill Switch bill which was signed by President Obama but he has refrained from utilizing it due to the potential catastrophic economic consequences. In addition all mutant organizations such as the Mutant Defense League was banned over the protests of the ACLU.

Finally the harshest measure was the founding of internment camps throughout the United States and the systematic rounding up of the mutant population, man, woman, and child. Federal forces moved to ruthlessly and efficiently act aided by civilians. All mutants placed in the camps are also tagged with an internal tracking chip. The camps are heavily guarded by military forces with heavy weaponry.

All this was not taken lying down by mutants who responded with a march of hundreds of thousands of mutants began to Washington D.C. in a recreation of Martin Luther King Jr’s famous march on Washington to protest these measures.

The marchers never made it. They were intercepted by federal forces who surrounded the marchers near Arlington Cemetery where they were opened fire on. Thousands of mutants were killed and tens of thousands more injured. The mutants who tried to flee were rounded up and placed in specially designed transport vans.

By the end of the second week almost 300,000 mutants were in government hands while up to a million others had fled and been dispersed.

President Obama’s approval rating has reached 83%.

Does Broccoli Make You Fat?

A new scientific study indicates that broccoli may not be as healthy as you think.

“I feel like we’ve been in this line for like ten days” Aubrey said

“I hate waiting” Set replied

They stood, slowly approaching an epic quest, what madness and slaughter had led them to this point?

“Well at least we’re almost there now,” she said rather half heartedly. The wait continued, there was no telling how long this travestey could continue.

Patience had never been one of Set’s virtues thousands of years of nights he had walked this earth, killing, learning, feeding but this … this waiting it was unbearable.

At long last no living soul stood between them and Aubrey’s destination.

The man before them at the counter said “May I take your order?”

A NES is like a shark. It needs forward motion to stay alive. What we have here is a dead shark.
-Andy Warhol or somebody.

who will do the weekly update with funny news stories then? :P

I don't know if we consider this updated or not, but i'm posting my story anyways.

Cornfields. That was all Barnabas could see in this waste of a state they call Indiana. Snowed out, wastes of land which may grow corn in the spring, but otherwise serve no purpose. Even the kid next to him was getting bored and kept complaining about the crappy radio stations and the cold.

After an excruciatingly long hour of driving, a plume of smoke could be seen on the horizon. As they neared the cloud they noticed it was a burning wreck. An armored humvee had wrecked and there were sets of footprints leading away from it.

As Barnabas got out to examine the tracks he noticed that all but one had sprinkles of blood along the track. He turned the car off the road and drove through the rough snow following the track which led to a country dirt road.

That night, they came upon a sleeping man in the middle of the road. When he got out of the car to approach the man, he leapt up and Barnabas found a hand on his throat pushing him up against a tree. “Don’t worry; we’re on your side.” He said motioning towards the kid whose eyes were glowing a bright yellow.

“Mutants. Come with me. We have a settlement. We have a city all to ourselves without the government, without prejudice. You can join our society, all mutants are welcome.”

Barnabas looked to the kid, who yawned. Well, if not peace, it would give them some fun.

I've got all the stuff, minor update changes (one week long, but only consists of a bunch of tweet sized headlines as opposed to the whole article. Which should make this game easier to update) I've rewritten the update in that format, all of this is ready to post, if the interest is there we could secede from this thread this afternoon.

Never got to use my picture :(

Spoiler :

Of course, they lie, but we can make that beautiful lie the truth later, I just wanted to finally post the damn thing I did while waiting for the update last week.

Heh. Still interested in this.

I'll be launching a similar NES to this, only better and without Silver's work mentality, sometime this week.

Will it be as Nazi moderated as your character?

...Am I missing something here or aren't a bunch of you jumping the gun? I mean, by NES standards the delay is ridiculously short. :p
