My modded civ wont appear in game

Hi guys,

I've been tinkering with ModBuddy using Kael's ModdersGuide.pdf and I seem to have a problem. The Civ wont appear in the game set up. The mod appears in the mod section and I can enable it, but the civ / leader doesn't appear when I go to set up a new game.

Now, given my personal limitations with artistry, I've had to skip (for now) the icons and all the graphic work. But I doubt that would prevent it from running.

Am I missing something here? Ie, is there some sort of thing I have to do to make the civ available in game or something?

edit: weirdly, I get this in the database log file, but this error occurs even without loading the mod:

Hmm.. ok. When you did it, did you do exactly what they did in the pdf file? For instance, did you keep it as the Celts rather than changing it to the name you wanted it to be?

Tomorrow I'm gonna start again and do the Celts one from scratch again and see how it goes.

Did you happen to save one of the files that you were working on while it was still in the 'Miscellaneous files' list? The error that you are getting seems to indicate that you overwrote one of the files while modding.

Ok. After reading your post, I decided to do a fresh install. Man, what a job that was... but eventually I managed to do it. I removed everything including Steam and the Documents/My Games stuff too in order to see if that database log error came back again. It did....

After installing it from scratch (properly - took me about 5 attempts) without anything including the ModBuddy and what not (so I haven't corrupted anything at all). I receive this error in the Database log file:

Does ANYONE else have this error in the database log file? I have this error from a CLEAN, FRESH install.

For the record, I'm using Win 7 64 bit.

edit: Fired the game up again and it results in this error: I dont know wtf is going on. Any ideas?

edit: I've made an attachement with all the log files. There is a few errors in the Localization.log file I've noticed. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I've attached the file to this thread (which is in the bug forum): http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9716108#post9716108

First it might help that you do several things:
1. Make sure you do not have multiple versions of your mod in your mods folder. (There is a bug where it will enable both for some reason.)
2. Clear your civ5 cache. (Another thing that can be glitchy-- from Kael.)
3. Make sure your files are correctly linked in your mod with the Actions tab in your mod's solution properties. (OnModActivated... etc.) This includes being a forward slash nazi.
4. Post your code here to be reviewed, while reviewing it yourself.

check for spelling errors in the "update database" commands vs. your actual filenames and paths (that was my mistake, therefore i mention it

also be sure to not have another *.modinfo file in your mod folder, no matter how many subfolders its buried in

Sorry I made you reinstall :blush:

I probably should have mentioned that steam has the ability to check the integrity of your game files. Right click the game go to 'properties -> local files --> verify integrity of game cache. For next time I guess ^^;

Posting your code here might help too. Though I understand it might be super secret :lol:

My database log file looks exactly like yours, and thats with a working mod for a new unit i made, the game still works fine and i did not alter any of the text xmls to which the log points :confused:

Thanks guys for the help. It appears that there is a bug with some retail versions of the game (for some ef'ed up reason).

I just deleted the cache and then did the integrity check. It came up with 1 file that failed the test. Steam then downloads it and that's it. I run the integrity check again and the same file fails the check, etc, etc, etc (repeatedly downloading the same file which again gets flag for failing the integrity check).

After all that I end up with the same problem as in my original post.

If you are having similar Database.log errors - go see my thread on this in the bug forums: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=387849 and add to it if you can. Maybe there is a pattern with who is affected and who is not.

(this is certainly driving me up the wall though)

I have extactly the same error messages in the log as you do. They do not hamper my modding, or gameplay, in any way.

You'll notice that most errors are for <Language_EN_US>, which is a table of text. This text is cosmetic only, specifically for Civlopedia entries, and has no effect on gamplay.

The other three errors are Fireaxis's fault since FEATURE_RIVER and FEATURE_LAKE do not actually appear in the Features table. This appears to be a simple housekeeping issue: the stuff that FEATURE_RIVER and FEATURE_LAKE are supposed to do in Feature_YieldChanges are performed by other tables, and they weren't properly cleaned.

Long story short, your bugs are not bugs. They are not affecting your mod. They are not the result of your mod.

As for why your mod won't load. I can see you're following Kaels guide, which is an excellent start. Just remember that in Properties -> Actions you need to use OnModActivate UpdateDatabase to tell the mod to update the database using your XMLs.

And make sure that everything is spelled correctly, and your syntax is correct! One spelling mistake, and one misplaced slash, and none of the changes in an XML file will be made.

Thanks for that. It's good to know it wont affect the mod.

As for the mod. I deleted it when I uninstalled everything. I'm going to start again and follow his steps and make the Celts first (rather than changing names to my own civ) and then see how that goes.

I did do all the Actions and they seemed to be properly done... I'll see how I go this time round. Thanks for the help.

Ok I got it going. The problem was with the Actions. I thought it might have been the order of the actions and so I started messing around with the order and put them in the order that was like the pdf file. It worked. Convinced with this theory I started playing around with the order and it appears to order it itself anyway. So I got no idea but to say that the problem was with the Actions themselves. Perhaps it was a spelling error afterall but I couldn't see it.
