Well, leaving aside the "land of the free" sentiment which... well... OK, we'll not mention that, as I say... that is one very strangely penned anthem, imo.
I mean, for instance:
"On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foes haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, oer the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the mornings first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:"
What? Just what? It does just about scan, in fact. But very oddly. But what on earth is it on about?
And small children have to learn this stuff off by heart????
No wonder Americans are weird.
Still, other anthems aren't any better, I guess.
How I long for the day when national borders are simply a dim memory of an incomprehensible former age!
Not that I hold with taxation without representation, I hasten to add. Oh dear me no.
