Natural Wonder Elimination Thread

Yosemite [18] (17+1) Simultaneous votes for Yosemite. The double-adjacency tiles on the north and south grant +2 science, +2 gold, and +2 food on top of any yields of the base tile – really good. And, space for two natural parks come the late game.

Ubsunur Hollow [14] (17-3) 2 faith, 1 food, 1 production? No thank you - hard pass on working those tiles. Only use is when paired with tundra pantheon; go Russia or go home.

Feels like Kilimanjaro has suffered from, well, a dubious downvote at best. Appeal is by far the least important aspect of most Wonders as you typically want to work/improve the tiles around them and in all cases early yield Wonders are vastly superior to any late game Park Wonders. Also the voice over/ flavor text has precisely zero bearing on the strength of the Wonder.

The food offered by Kilimanjaro is nothing to snub your nose at. Yield-wise it is functionally similar to Torres (though Torres is far superior). But Kilimanjaro also acts as an infrequent-but-always-active volcano, so its yields can improve throughout the course of the game.

I agree that Lysefjord is pretty bad, with extremely limited usefulness.

Looks like Roraima will be this thread's overvalued item. Sure it's Top 10 but it's not Top 5 by a long shot. So many other Wonders here will propel you to much better starts.

Great Barrier: absolutely does not deserve to be downvoted yet. +6 food and +4 science is a functional, great reward for an early city. Plus, it can be improved with the normal accoutrements of a lighthouse & shipyard.

Lysefjord: number of times I’ve found this early enough to be useful? Zero. Number of times I’ve found it spawn on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, far away from any major landmass? Plenty.

The Dead Sea (16-3=13) has pretty marginal tile yields at 2 faith/2 culture and no longer provides fresh water to compensate. The healing bonus, unlike other units boosts, is only relevant if you happen to be fighting in the wonder's immediate area.

Pantanal (17+1=18) Unlike 2 faith/2 culture, 2 food/2 culture is a great combination to be working in the early game. And like all 4 tile workable wonders, its great for holy site and national park placements.

High risk high reward wonder. You don't really need liang since the tiles near the icelandic volano are always fertile, so there is no point placing districts near them.
You just pray that it keeps erupting and gives you plenty of food and production in the tundra/snow.

Dead Sea - The name fits what it is, dead. 2C2F is pretty much unworkable unless you want your city to actually grow. The healing bonus is far too situational, so it pretty much does not exist. Also, it doesn't even provide fresh water!

Matio Tipila - This wonder is consistently good, and has no downsides. You can't go wrong with 1P1F to adjacent tiles.

Matterhorn [18] (17+1) The culture can be impactful in the early game, and you even get a free combat strength bonus to boot. Only downside is it sometimes spawns half-stuck in a mountain range.

Gobustan [1] (4-3) Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this wonder spawn in the flesh. But looking at its yields, I agree that it seems pretty awful.

Interesting I think it's definitely Top 5 maybe Top 3 - struggling to think of too many better wonders.

Gobustan [2] 1+1

Crater Lake [8] 11-3
Gobustan is bad but has it's uses with Holy Site adjacency especially with Desert Folklore and certainly shouldn't be so far behind Crater Lake which can't take advantage of DF and might get you a slightly faster pantheon - nice but value soon goes.

Lysefjord is not going to have a huge impact given how low importance naval combat is in this game. Torres del Paine can generate some awesome yields and if you're lucky to start near to it it'll be a fun game for you.

Gobustan [0] Eliminated: While it looks cool, no food for three culture is a pretty tough pill to swallow. And when it is actually feasible to work no food tiles, 3 culture is pretty weak, and one production hardly makes a difference.

Lysefjord is getting unfairly nuked. You can get a free promotion each time you upgrade your units, which adds up to increased range navy. It really should not go before the rubbish wonders e.g Everest, Chocolate Hills, etc.

TBH I think we might be being a little too hard on the desert natural wonders. On the one hand, yes, Petra is not a 100% sure thing and the tiles are weak without it... but on the other hand, 9 times out of 10 when I put down a city in the desert I get Petra built, even on Deity. All the sudden those weak tiles have some pretty nice yields, and then you're adding these bonuses on top of those... I think that makes them better than a few others on this list that have yields that will ALWAYS be bad-to-mediocre IMO.

Bermuda Triangle [7] (10-3) I suppose there's that itty bitty chance this spawns close enough for you to actually work, but +1 movement at sea just isn't all that useful if it doesn't, and even then it's going to send your ship who-knows-where to get it.

Ha-long 17+1 The best wonder on sea. Posituve food makes it worth to work early wuth culture, which is lacking usually early. And still can place +4 HS

Galapagos 13-3 The worst wonder on sea. No holy site and you have to settle peninsula usually to reach it with buying tiles. Bermuda at least teleports

Bermuda Triangle [4] (7 - 3): This wonder gives you insane yields, but I have never seen this wonder ever be workable. I haven't even seen it from other players ever be workable. It's like a better Krakatoa from Civ V, but just like Krakatoa, it ever being usable is really rare.

Mount Roraima [20] (19 + 1): This wonder gives you a massive amount of yields, and accelerates your early game by a ridiculous amount. You'll both end up with a large science advantage and you'll be able to spread your religion far & wide. I'm always happy to find Roraima.

Anyway, for my vote:

New Bermuda Triangle [4]
Chocolate Hills [13]
Crater Lake [5] (8-3) - At 4 faith / 1 science but zero food or production, this seems high compared to something like Lysefjord which, while not great, at least offers you something unique without having to work it.

Mount Roraima [21] (20+1) - Giving this an upvote just because the 3 faith / 3 science on top of base tile yields on one hex alone shows how much better this is than Crater Lake.

Do you feel participation of natural wonder elimination is a bit lower than other ones. I guess there's not much to argue about natural wonders, unlike city states and non-natural wonders.

Galápagos Islands [11] (10+1) Somehow I found Galápagos Islands in my games descent. And it's good if you can pair it with Mausoleum. It boost so many tiles, you don't have to work them all.
Lake Retba [4] (7-3) Really don't know what to downvote, I'd go with Lake Retba then. A bit underwhelming. No fresh water. Settling it ≈ losing two tiles. At least Dead Sea heals your units.

@Noble Zarkon Wonders I'd rather have than Roraima:
Eyjafjallajökull (minimum 2f, 1c.. increasing over time)
Ha Long Bay (3f, 1p, 1c.. further improved by all harbor buildings, Aukland, always has a least coastal housing)
Matterhorn (+1c, +3 hill combat and hill movement)
Kilimanjaro (minimum +2 food, increasing over time)
Torres (grass hills = minimum 4f2p, plains hills = minimum 2f4p)
Païtiti (2c, 3g, +4g to international routes)
Tsingy (+1c, +1s)
Yosemite (+1f, +1s, +1g)...

possibly Piopiotahi (more culture and minimum coastal housing)
and possibly Vesuvius (omg the yields)
and *maybe even* Pantanal (but perhaps not).

The commonality? Food enough to guarantee growth, and CULTURE > SCIENCE.

Find this early on, settle two cities near it, and you’ve got yourself a highly flexible path to any victory type you want.

Dead Sea [11] 10 +1 - One upvote for the Dead Sea before it dies, a great 'I really want a specific pantheon' wonder to start near. And is two tiles at least for the adjacenies. And does provide fresh water, inexplicably.

Delicate Arch [2] 5-3 While it pains me to downvote my homestate natural wonder - desert placement, mediocre yields, and it's only one tile, meaning it doesn't even give great holysite adjacency bonuses.

Also, I know Civs scale is widely off anyways, but this one bugs the most. It's super picturesque with it's cliffsite placement and all irl. But the arch itself is literally not much bigger than like a suburban house. That it's the same 'size' as a city center - or even other one tile wonders like Uluru or Crater Lake, continually bugs me.
