Im concidering trying something, but I wanted to know if anyone had done anything like it...

Make "Mines" into "Oil rigs" suitable for land or sea placement...allow only mines (Not irrigation or roads or anyother improvements) to be built in Coast/Sea tiles...

then Workers on land could still build all improvements, and boats could only build oil rigs...While still having all worker actions checked to allow "terraform" flag...

anyone got info on this idea before I set up a biq for it???

I think someone did tests on sea workers and found that they worked just fine. The problem was that the AI did not use them. The issue for you here will be whether the AI will actually use the mines when the ships do not have the terraform flag checked. If it works then I'll be slightly surprised, but pleased - Good luck.

Sadly that is correct. The terraform AI flag is only available for land units.

There has been some research done into units that have both combat and terraform abilities, and I think that some people have managed to get the AI to use a units' terraform abilities without having the flag set. However, these units are still considered by the AI to be primarily combat units.

I think that maybe Oz knows more about this than I, so I'll shut up until he's shown up. :)

Just increase the amount of shields a mine produces on 'sea' or 'coast' terrain to '1', and you shounldn't have to worry about roads in water. Then the AI terraform option can be enabled. I've never gone this far, but then again, I haven't thought much on it.

Yup! I tried that in the FF mod, but as Keroro and Weasel said, the AI did exactly two things with the transport/cargo ships that had the "build mines" ability: Jack and Spit...

Which is why I decided to move the "increase shields in water" building down an era (so you get it in the industrial instead of modern era), with a possible option of adding a second one in the modern era. (the current one looks like the original Oil Rig and is called "Coastal Salvage operation", and the modern one will be "Offshore Mining" if I add it....) If I can find a improvement that looks like a dredging fleet with a floating crane, that will replace the oil rig graphics for the Coastal Salvage operation, and the oil rig will go back to the offshore mining slot....

I think it was Derf who made some pioneer work in water settlers and workers. Additionally to the still noted fact, that the AI doesn´t use such a unit, is -if I remember well- that there are other rules for pillaging such water improvements.

Yep, little old me.
It is possible, but as said, the AI is stupid and hasn't a clue on them.
They also don't bombard or pillage improvements at sea either.
If you really need to increase tile output at sea, try some of the building flags - then the AI knows what it's doing.... sort of.

 - uh, I mean, thank you for your confidence!

There is NO WAY to get land units to work water tiles or for that matter venture out to sea. Not only that, but it's possible to use the Editor to pre-place roads - which the AI will never use My "acid test" was to place an AI unit on a 1 tile island joined to the "mainland" by a road over a single coastal tile; the AI unit never moved.

As an aside, one thing I haven't tried is to see what happens when a terraform unit is on a boat - however, whatever the result (if any) the AI won't use it.

Best,

Oz
