svchost.exe is hijacking my pc, it will often take up 100% of CPU power and if I kill it, the sound will not work. Seem to be connected with DirectSound driver, but I virus scan turned up nothing. Please help!

...is a generic host process for windows services. It does belong to the OS, but services from third parties can use svchosts and be 'hosted' by the OS. I do not like svchost because any number of services will appear the same under the task manager, and if one is misbehaving it is not at all obvious what to do. You can differentiate between them on XP professional as outlined in the wiki article, but it is a pain.
Essentially you are more or less powerless and should not try to obstruct the svchost itself, as it is part of the OS. You can, however, check if you have any services installed that you do not want.
There are hundreds of viruses/worms that rename themselves svchost.exe because there are always multiple svchost processes running in Windows, so it is less easy to pick up. I would definately do a virus scan and see what you can find. Also, maybe a spyware check too.
