need some help with my noble skills

micro update:

found a site near the gold with stone, im thinking i might have to grab it and try for the mids

i just made shadow run to T51 as i proposed, to see how it will be different from your game.

Screens in Spoiler. I think I am doing there a mistake with going IW before AH, but will see. And no whipping yet ;-)

ok so stopped at turn 80, settled 2 new citys, one is done its monument and is now working on another worker (original one got eaten by an animal) figured the 3rd city by the sugar was going to come a little later then it did so I didnt make IW a priority as much as i should have considering I have no copper. top it all off im boxed in on both sides.

i need iron or copper fast so i can wipe out at least one of them. this game honestly makes me look like allot worse of a player then i am lol. so next block of turns, im going to look to the west for some iron or copper. then try to start a nice sword and axe rush. there is copper to the north but that requires me going to war now. which might be possible if i use horses.

so this is the current land

and the north area

again this game is terribad even by my standards at the moment, but it can be pulled together. I've got quite a few fog busters out there now looking for new sites

one thing is clear you're way better then me on exploration :-)

the city west from cap is pretty central and I think you missed there opportunity for creating great bureau capital not using the river enough.
Look at my dotmap in the shadow game I provided, it's not best, but I think the 2xsugar, cow + rivers city will be great bureau cap after I move palace there.

one question about the dot map, why so much overlap? I always thought overlap was something to avoid, or are those white dots all potential places for one city?

the breau cap move is something ill do closer to the time i get the tech. possibly have a better place by then.

now about the citys not near a food resource, shouldnt the flood plains cancel out the food need? sure im missing out on some health bonus but once math comes I can build an aqueduct

I think fp is considered as half food resource so it's not so bad, i think the remark was directed at your 3rd city.

Well actually I played more the shadow and placed the 2 western city as it to be seen, i placed another city between that gold and cap more north west.

You consider that overlap too big? Well the 2 western cities share 4 tiles out of 20, that's not much...consider you need city size 17 to take even notion. Initially i am planning to get help from the most western city with growing cottages for cap until it grows into it.
that city 1S from banana is really more placeholder...didnt know what to do with that area really... in my current situation I waste 1 sugar (not in any bfc) but sugar is considered one of the weakest food resources so i think it's a bit fine. Worse is that i miss there those grass hills...maybe some really late city would be good there.

@DaveMcW
what you think about bananas at river? not worth it? it's 4 food after farm.

By the rivers of banana
Where we sat down
Yeah we wait
Until we discover calendar (and iron working if it is in the jungle)

Ok, that was just an excuse to post this here:

So I could post this as well

I've always avoided overlap, but odds are most cities will not grow to the point of using all the tiles. and if they do they should be whipped in to units. i can see the plans you have for a couple of those locations, when i load up in a couple hours i might rex some of the sites so i can prepare for war.

well actually i am at 175AD, settled peacefully 8 cities (had there a crush cough cough) and have enough room for 2 more cities and well i don't see reason for war...

I didnt play optimally, for some weird reason when i play lower diffs i just click and click and click... and normal i am not used to, i usually play on epic so everything is for me a bit off-timed.

shadow game to 1kAD for reference reasons

Spoiler :

At first I want to say that I am almost 100% sure some players here on board would be in better situation then me, I am fine with it and hope that still will help you with anything.

The whole game peacefully, at first I was a bit affraid taking hindu from Saladin would be dangerous, since MM was juda with the rest of the bulk. Then he converted Theology and took Christianity and I knew it's safe to adopt Saladin's religion. After he came with his demand I took it. As i expected MM Christian the rest didnt liked, but to my surprise the holy city of christianity had Charlemagne, who DoWed MM!
All that meant peacefull expanding.
I moved the cap to the spot i planned, old cap converted to gp farm with NE and all those food there.
To my surprise i ended in hammer economy...there is so much hills around the east->west river that i just farmed and mined away.
i badly scouted the western part missing 1 fish :-( I am thinking about placing there another city...
those middle cities will be probably workshopped for production.

The round ironically ended with me finishing education, 1 GS to use - tough decision since he can bulb only compass, but the tech situation is very good for us and we could tech a bit lower techs like compass etc. and wait a bit with liberalism.

diplomatically I would probably convert to free religion to get better diplo. I would prepare for cavalry war and then rush west continent, probably trying to vassal saladdin somewhere. but he has enough power to not peacevassal, there is possibility that after teching/getting feud MM will offer peacevassal as he usually does.
He is nice buffer state against charlemagne and peacevassaling MM would serve as demerit for Charles war tendences I think.

Well that are my thoughts about the shadow game.

wow, great looking game so far. gives me hope on my map. So for the next update ill try some diplomacy with those around me and try to get up to around 6-9 cities. im thinking doing a 50 turn run just to show a bit more expansion and such

ok so in my save a bunch of barbaians keep jumping up, so going back to first updates save, update will be posted on turn 130

So I'm updating 10 turns early, the game is startiung to turn around. the points are coming in now and in the next few turns my research should finally get a bit better right now im a weeee bit behind the tech race, but once i get currency ill sky rocket above them. still need to find 2 more city locals but hey cant complain other wise

as you can see i need to make some more troops to avoid DOW but shouldnt be a problem since im lead in manfacturing

hmm that economy crash is inevitable, but it seems you are not doing good in getting out of the hole. 150 AD and working on alpha is bad, 14bpt is very bad for this time of the game.
I wouldnt build more units since it will only deepen the eco hole. Try to rely more on diplo, if you can make more tension between charle+hatty would be great.

Bombay has no riverside cottages? big mistake, what tiles are you working there? It seems like a lot unimproved - big big mistake

Probably you dont have enough workers.
actually too many cities works too many unimproved tiles. Could you please count the number of workers and post it?

I would immidietely whip some less effective citizens for something more productive (probably workers to improve the land!). You got good land, but it's not improved and it hurts you!

you have 7 cities, you should have at least 10 workers, seeing all that jungle even some more.

right now im sitting at 6 workers 6 cities, everything i have read has pointed to a ratio of 1:1 cities/workers. as for the cottaes, im playing another game as well as this where im running a pure snack economy so odds are i just gapped on putting cottages.

well there is specific threads about optimal number of workers running like last 2 days and the least number in early game is 1.5 worker/city, you can sometimes get away with 1 worker/city, but you didnt since there is so much unimproved land.

well forget then cottages, but why there is nothing farmed then for more specialists? if i see correctly bombay is working 2 unimproved tiles (1 grass forest, 1 river grassland)

Varnasm, I just wanna say thanks for helping me with all this! so i read the post on workers, then i looked at the game. more workers needed 100% so the next round is going to be about filling in the holes in between a couple of my cities. getting massive workers out and starting out the specialist economy so I can try to grab the tech lead. also after i get bureaucracy I'm going to move the capital for the commerce boost.

I would suggest to participate in NC games here on forums and watching some TMIT's videos, that helped me most to bridge after 4 years of vacation from warlord to monarch.

In NC games there is great mixture of opinions since everyone plays the same map, but has different opinions. There even participate high level players monarch/emperor sometimes even immortal, so you can get a picture of what it's all about.

And of course you can search there help in the NC game, but it's a bit problematic since some people don't like reading spoilers too soon.
It wouldnt be bad if you try some recent NC games, that a lot of players went through already.

Could be helpful. I was watching one of tmit's videos earlier. planning on finishing that string up this evening and then going on to the other 4 or so he has posted. in the other game im running right now, im doing pretty well. top fo the scoreboard, already knocked out another civ to get the great wall. dabbling in specialist economys.
