Need some ideas for a 2nd UU

I know the Gladiators were never used in battle (at least not fighting for Rome). But its a Gladiator! Can it get any cooler?

Why don't you give the Romans a Ballista or Onager as a UU.

You know, because there are hardly any seige-craft UUs out there, and only ONE in the regular game (Hwa'cha)

Nope. I'd keep it this way. :cooool:
Better this way then using some non-Roman unit as a so-called auxiliary to replace the axeman.

The Roman military depended most of all on its soldiers. not cavalry, not siege engines, not warships.

But the Romans already have an infantry UU. I think the Ballista would be the best choice because the classical era is already laden with Axemen and Swordsmen replacements but very light on siege units.

The biggest problem though is a lack of graphics. If there's a ballista graphic out there, I haven't found it.

But putting a non-crossbow unit into the crossbow slot is a tantalizing proposal... particularly since I've been struggling to add new UU's while trying to keep the UU's per default units to a minimum.

That's true. I suppose history tells us both those classes of units were most visible. ;)

I *think* one of the Empire Earth units in the database is a ballista. But the converted version isn't animated as far as I know.

Ain't that true. I prefer units that show the behaviour/effect instead of the exact graphic nature of the unit class. Makes for "nice" surprises in gameplay. :D
But IF we had an animated ballista, I'd be fine with replacing it the crossbow slot for the Romans. Their siege engines did after all make a difference at times.

A bit off-topic Dom Pedro, but I've been working on Cultural Citystyles not using graphics which you use in your Test if Time mod. IIRC, only the Zun Tsu wonder graphic is still used as an Asian renaissance palace in CC. But if you want it, I have a graphic left which could replace the Zun Tsu wonder graphic. A retextured Taoism building with some shields and swords around the entrance...

I do find it pretty incredible that after all these years of the game being out, and in spite of all the different minor variations on all sorts of units, none of the unit makers have tackled a ballista.

I don't know if this has been resolved, but the Inka UU should be a slinger. They were famous for their slingers.

What about a new 2nd Japanese UU? Current is Zero, but I don't particularly think that's a good uu.

I only have a couple of gripes with the list. The Mamlukes for Egypt, its more Arabic/Muslim than ancient Egypt, but I suppose that doesn't matter anyway. And then I believe Arabia already has a Knight replacement (doesn't the Camel Archer replace the Knight already?).

Camel Archer has been made into a HA replacement, and I gave it an Attack bonus in Desert terrain.

What about a new 2nd Japanese UU? Current is Zero, but I don't particularly think that's a good uu.

How do you feel about longbow UU for the Japanese? The Yumi? There's even a mixed Samurai/longbow animated unit in the database...

EGYPT
Mamluk (Knight)

Mmm, they were throughly trained and indoctrinated... give them that double xp promotion from combat that normally only GG's get.

OTTOMANS
Sipahi (Cuirassier)
14:strength: (overpowered?)

I think so, yes. Besides, it looks too much as a weaker cavalry.
Perhaps give them a benefit against gunpowder units? Or, if that is possible xml-wise, a benefit to grenadiers only.

SUMER
Onager Chariot
Resourceless
Requires Animal Husbandry (overpowered? should I make it more expensive?)

I think it's okay. The chariot is a limited era unit anyway.

CONFEDERACY
(need a name) (rifleman)
Rebel? ;)
Also, it seems alot of the confederate army was conscripted. So Conscript could fit too.
Woodsman I
1 First Strike (may need buff)

Extra income from pillaging?

Onager chariot: Very interesting. While it makes a guaranteed early rush, you don't have the Persian or Egyptian bonus to go through archers. Of course at lower levels you might get the chariot before the archer even comes on the scene... so its situational to the level.

You mean like how Cataphracts are basically Cuirassiers? ;)

France: Zuaves, foreign legion
Israel: urban warrior, SPYDER
Portugal: Bandeirantes, Comandos

Israel: urban warrior, SPYDER

I think the idea is that they are so generic they are icons for the country which they represent. For example, the lee-enfield rifle became so symbolic of the British Empire that a group of prisoners in Breaker Morant were shot under 'rule three-oh-three'. That said I can't really think of a good israeli one - maybe a replacement for the spy which can do some other cool stuff?

By the way, is this mod still going?
