Neighbor keeps using our wireless.

Until a short while ago, WEP protection had been sufficient to keep out most of our non-tech neighbors. But my mom gave out the key to everyone in the building. I changed the protection to WPA2 Personal and some unknown neighbor somehow got in again. And now I implemented a MAC address whitelist (for our computers only) yet she's still on our network using our internet!

I cant figure out whats going on as I didnt tell my mom I put in a new key (so she can't have given it out). Any suggestions here?

Yup.

It sounds like your neighbor is good.

Have you reset the connection since adding the whitelist? It's possible the router only checks new connections against the whitelist, so if your neighbor has been on since before the whitelist...

Otherwise I don't know how you'd bypass a whitelist like that.

It shouldn't check until the DCHP reservation expires. Depends on the router though.

Better however to boot everyone off and have the re-lease, it should block them then.

Depends on the router model (maybe?), but if you can find the IP the router is assigning that computer (just eliminate from the ones your computers are using) then you may be able to set it where it redirects them to www.civfanatics.com (or whatever other website you want) no matter where they try to go.

Not a complete work around, but a fun one nonetheless. Just hope they dont do a lot of gaming on it.

Do you pay for the internet? Or you mother?

You're mother has every right to hand out access. You shouldn't be trying to block it.

While that's fair, if aimee is in charge of making sure it works sometimes that means not allowing people in. It also means going to their computer and making sure they're not doing anything wrong.

Well the silly thing is that my mom gave out the key to everyone and then complained that they were "hacking into her computer" by appearing on the network list. Not to mention real massive bandwidth slowdowns.

Something odd now: My mom was outside doing something and saw that the cable box outside the building (the internet also comes in through it)... the lid had been torn off (it was locked). Any idea what this is?

Wow! Is this ever weird. Basically, the cable guy came up and found that the lock had been ripped off and the cables spliced and that basically, the neighbor had a modem in there. I looked it up and some companies use MAC adddres filtering to keep that from happening but apparently ours duesnt (either that or they were trying and it didnt work). They were also done very recently apparently so maybe when I removed her from the wireless that happened. Isnt that weird?

Which is what makes it double-weird. The cable guy did a written warning thing and the landlord is evicting her anyways (nonpayment of rent) so happily we dont have to deal with that anymore. (Other tenants in the building call that the "cursed apartment" because every tenant in there the last few years ended up being a troublemaker that got evicted).
