figured, as i've done a post for the Mods thread, i'd do one for here too.
as i was writing this it turned into a "DOs and DONTs".
1. dont join a game without understanding the rules.
2. dont join a game if you cant meet the time commitment (ie wont have the time to do orders/stories)
3. dont join a game if you're going away on vacation in a week and wont be back for a month
4. do engage your neighbors in diplomacy early. sometimes you wont have the time to negotiate a treaty the turn you need it, so its better to have it in advance. plus it makes the game more interactive earlier and makes more possibilities for backstabbing.
5. do do your orders/story as soon as possible. dont wait for what others post/say unless its absolutely neccessary. your orders in most cases should be a reaction to the update, not to stuff that happens afterwards.
6. do try to aquire a "in game personality" (wheather one for all NESs or a different for each) as it makes the game much more fun, both for you and the others involved (players and mods)
7. do not challenge the MOD's decision/action unless it is contrary to the writen rules of the game. it is after all his/her game, and doing so will only start a flame war, which can kill the game (then you still dont get your way).
8. do challenge the MOD's decisions/actions if they are contrary to the rules of the game, cause it might just be an oversite or the mod didnt remember his own rules (with how often rules get rewriten here, that happens), and the mod will probably change it. might be better to do it in a PM then a post just in case though.
9. do not threaten to quit a game (either leave or stay). this usualy makes for a flame war reguarding the reason for your leaving.
10. do not ask if the game is dead unless there realy has been no activity for a long time (like a week). more then one game has been killed because someone asked "is this dead" after 2 days without an update, even though people were sending orders and all, cause then a lot of other people assumed that it was dead, and it died from inactivity one they stoped checking the thread.
