At the end of this month I'm going to be working (as a network engineer) for a new employer, the business of which is providing 3G data services to devices other than your average mobile phone. I'm going to be pretty much 24/7 oncall, and thus am looking at a netbook for configuring/troubleshooting the actual network components (a desktop workstation will be used for documentation/diagrams and such). I've seen rave reviews on the Asus Eee1000 line of netbooks, but haven't seen any indication that they're 3G capable and would prefer a netbook hardwired for it rather than using a USB add-on for it.

Any thoughts/advice about that issue in particular, or for that matter netbook usage more generally? At US$200-400 with a real operating system, I'd guess that their popularity is going to rise pretty quickly.

I'm sure there are netbooks that allow you to put your own Sim card in, I've definitely seen them. Sadly I can't help you any more than confirming they exist...

From what I can tell, most netbooks have a 3G card for a specific company, so they probably wont be much help to connect to your employers network. You may want to enquire about the range of devices for netbooks/notebooks that can connect to your employers network and go from there.
