Weeeewwww, 4.99$US (at 1.03CDN - the deal strikes me as a break even value) to spend on some Pineapple Juice & paddles.

PS; And, it's "Only" 68.1Mbs of extra-fun for a few weeks.

PS2; Correction about currency "estimates" though.... Steam/Paypal has it at 1.00004 & my latest market figures have it 1.0274 -- a penny here, a penny there.

3.50Euro is about 14.00PLN (Polish currency) here... roughly a medium-sized meal at McDonald's or 5 bottles of beer. Vanilla Civ5 costs 150.00PLN, which would be about 36.00Euro. Oh what a bargain!

I think I can spend this on the Polynesians, and on the beer as well!

Incidentally, they have an Embarked graphic I've never seen before. I'm not sure if it's actually new or if it previously existed as the Ancient era embark graphic, since it's pretty rare to be able to embark in the Ancient era (requires Optics).

Polynesian cultural victory does sound interesting... however.

A Moai realistically gives between 2-4 culture... preventing you from getting food, production or gold

Trade Post->Cultural City State
Farm->Support an Artist

The "double-hulled canoe" is a unique embarked graphic for them, as is the unique Maori warrior graphic. They are referenced in the art defines of DLC_03.

Still, when I'm going for a cultural victory I usually run artist specialists and work landmarks. These are almost as good as landmarks without burning a GP. They also have an output that's dramatically better than running an artist specialist, since you'll be getting about the same or more culture, plus the base tile yield. In a city with grassland coast or some good food sources nearby (or if you just get a couple maritime CS allies), you could easily be pumping out 10-15 culture from these puppies.

edit: Oh, I should point out that comparing them to running an artist specialist isn't totally accurate, since they don't give you points towards a GA, but that doesn't even really matter. What would have have done with that GA anyways, build a landmark? No need, since the moai are almost as good. Let your GP farm crank out scientists and engineers instead!

I'm not saying that they're OP, but rather that they may be the civ best-suited for a cultural victory at the moment. Especially when you combine with with their ability to reach unpopulated islands that nobody else can get to, meaning they can exist for the first half of the game or so with no real military presence required.

They are very fun; it should be possible to pull off a wide cultural victory with them, btw, but due to lack of production/gold your economy stinks. I think it's a viable tradeoff.

Here is the full list:

Unique Ability: Wayfinding. Can embark and move over Oceans immediately (They can embark on turn 1. Movement points are still used to embark/disembark.). +1 Sight when embarked. +10% Combat Strength bonus if within 2 tiles of a Moai. (Unique "Double-Hulled War Canoe" graphic for early embarked units)

Unique Unit: Maori Warrior. 40, 2, 6 (same as Warrior). Ancient Era unit that strikes fear into nearby enemies making them less effective in combat. Only Polynesia may build it. Replaces the Warrior.
Maori start with the unique promotion: "Haka War Dance": Enemy units are -10% Combat Strength when adjacent to any unit with this promotion. (does not stack, but it's a promotion that will be with the unit all game)

Unique Improvement: Moai (available with Construction). +1. May only be built on the coast. +1 for each adjacent Moai. +1 when the Flight technology is researched.

Moai scale off the wrong thing. They should scale off of coastline hex sides, not adjacent moai. Put one on a single tile island and manage to work it = full of win. Instead, they're best used lining the edges of a continent.

Does the UA mean that the tech isn't required to move into sea tiles (ie, they can embark at turn 1) or simply that a unit's movement points don't get used up upon embarkation?

Can the improvement be built on resources?

1) They can embark on turn 1. Movement points are still used to embark/disembark.
2) Like other improvements, Moai can not be built over resources. This makes setting up Moai "farms" a little more difficult sometimes. I had this awesome 5 tile cluster of them with a resource right in the middle... ;(
