Should the third HRE UHV be changed to represent Austria better?

One of UHV should vassalize France as france was the winner in thirties year war

Well, Portugal was in fact a vassal of the HRE...to be correct: under Habsburgian rule.

Ovious choices would be Portugal, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and even France and Russia.

Wasn't their unification more of a result of intermarriage between royal families? I don't think the HRE ever invaded Spain or Portugal.

Also: how are you supposed to vassalize the Netherlands by 1600 if they spawn in 1580?

Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands are the historical choices, Italy also makes a lot of sense.

Is it possible to vassalise the Netherlands so soon after they spawn? That also seems a bit ahistorical, as the spawn of the Netherlands was essentially the Low Countries liberating themselves from Habsburg rule.

Italy is also difficult, as most HRE players will bulldoze straight through Venice to get to Rome and hence prevent Italy from ever spawning.

Not saying the UHV needs to be changed, but it seems that game and the Apostolic Palace UHV will automatically remove two potential historic vassals.

Maybe the goal should be changed. The alternative is doing some culture stuff in Vienna by 1700 AD. Like settling great artists.

My biggest problem with the vassal goal is getting civs to actually vassalize to you... in one game, France vassalized to Russia during my invasion, and my capitulated Poland collapsed.

Perhaps it's a good thing to encourage the HRE to switch to City States, since it's IMO the best available (in DoC) representation of what the HRE is - neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire.

So yeah, a Great Artist UHV would be good. If only to spawn Mozart.

:agree:

Settling great artists in Vienna would be good, as it adds an extra dimension to the HRE, and encouraging the use of City States would be a good addition. Perhaps also encourage a switch to Mercantilism, as that was a historical policy of the Habsburg HRE, albeit one they failed to implement very well.

EDIT: Although this may need some changes to the HRE's starting techs, as they may struggle to get Aesthetics and Drama as well as Paper and Printing Press in time to found Protestantism and build Theatres in time.

Actually, being first to Printing Press doesn't seem to present that much of a challenge currently so this could make for more interesting decisions for the tech path.

True. A human can usually beeline it before 1500AD, whereas the AI is usually there around 1600, so the extra 20 turns gives some leeway, as long as we don't dawdle!

Most of my games on Monarch, I've been able to get there by ca. 1350 AD at the latest and still compete militarily.
