(maybe 'Strategy Tutorials' might be a better title?)

Yes, I know there's tutorials on different strategies, which can be hard to grasp for the entire game. (atleast for me. :)) So, my suggestion on a new idea is an 'Expert Tutorial', maybe a 'Match the Expert' type game.

It would work like this:

- Someone's who's really good at the game would open a thread for each difficulty level (granted, not *ALL* at the same time!). Yes, that means even chieftain. :king:

- The game would move in 10 turn increments. Each 'session' would be posted, and people can ask questions about the strategy.

- The player (expert) would post a very detailed writeup of the game. Here's an example:

[ Include a picture of the map at the start of the game ]
Describe the surrounding. If the starting posistion is good/bad, explain why. (i.e., there's X amount of potential shields at the end of the game...). Once an area has been scouted, describe your plan in detail (i.e., X city is a settler factory, Y city will build wonders, etc.).

[ Include a map of the known area, with food/shield/commerce icons, or numbers indicating such. ] The player should even show why a certain area would grow better than another, or not as well.

[ Include strategic maps ] These would be when declaring a war on another civ.

------ End of Example ------

- Players don't have too make a detailed review of battles involving dozens, if not hundreds of units. A general description would suffice (i.e., moved 50 infantry south of Mephis for transport. Building 8 more transports in Thebes, Alexandria, and Heliopolis in preperation for tanks.)

- Readers can ask questions as to why certain decisions were made.

- Each of the player's (expert's) post should have a link to the next and previous 'turn session' post.

- Since different players have different strategies (tight build, spread out, settler rush...), post the strategy you're using in your first post, and why you think it's effective.

- If the player can, find a "sticky situation" (bad start locations - jungle, desert, ice islands, small islands) to show how you can make the best out of that start.

- The player should also upload a game save after every 10th turn. (540 saves would kill the host server! :)).

- optional: The readers can download the games, and try to match the player's strategy.

- Please don't be shy about making a thread for chieftain/warlord/regeant levels. :egypt:

Food for thought: Check out Sullla's civ3 website. The brief :lol::lol: summaries he does of his games are very rewarding. He explains his strategies, and why and how he did/used them. He is very good player - be sure to check it out. I've learnt much from him, altough I don't think he knows it ;).

PS - is the past tense of learn 'learnt' or 'learned'? I pronounce it 'learnt', so I spell it like that.

Wow... I'm like well known around here now. I've been away for the last 10 days and I come back to find a nice message like this. Thanks Exsanguination! And what's all the laughter about my reports being brief? My GOTM8 report was only 9 pages long! ;) (I came in 4th place out of 112 in that game too - nice!)

The tutorial idea is a good one though. And it's something I am planning to do in the future. I came up with the idea myself when running my training day game SUL4. No fewer than 4 different people contacted me via e-mail asking if they could join the game, and I unfortunately had to turn them away because the game was full - and more than 5 people in a rotation causes problems.

So I thought of the idea for a tutorial game. A real tutorial, to replace the not-very helpful one that comes with the game. I will play out the opening of a Regent game, with absolutely tons of pictures and advice explaining everything, EVERYTHING I am doing and host it on my website, along with saves every 10 turns. The idea is that anyone can download the saves and play along with the game, or just read through it for the information. It's a way of trying to reach more people, although unfortunately more impersonal in nature.

When can you expect to see something like this? Maybe in about a month, depending on how busy I am. I'm playing through a Deity game at the moment with Realms Beyond Civilization and I want to do another game of theirs on a tiny map after that. Then, maybe I will try to do it. And I want to get into another succession game soon too because I'm not currently in one. I will certainly post on this board if/when it does get done though. :)

Hey Sullla - you should add a guestbook to your site (for feedback). If you couldn't guess it, I  your site. It's awesome. I like the tutorial idea, also.

I'm currrently writing out a play-by-play commentary (w/ pics) on my GOTM9 game, once I'm done I'll copy it on to CivFanatics. The idea, at least for me, is to have the vets tell me what I did wrong . And I know I've done lots wrong. But the emperor game is a nice little refreshment, it's been fun so far.

sulla when i went on your website after reading it for a while the geosite thing came up something about memory

edit-but a good site witha lot of helpful advice

That's another thing I'm thinking of doing. Writing a play-by-play, and having the experts critique it.
