Settling beside a river = +2 health in that city, cities along the same river will also be connected(with sailing) to other cities along the same river sharing resources and trade routes like a road connection. Also if you have an inland city along a river connected to the ocean it will be connected with your coastal cities and other cities with a river connected to ocean but remember those cities wont be able to build any boats.
Coastal cities arnt meant to be production powerhouses they are commerce cities in most cases.

I ussually never find myself needing to build a single farm and also have no trouble getting my cities to 18-25 pop which is decent enough i think. The only tiles i farm are 1 food tiles that couldnt be worked otherwise.

I think the general rule to expanding is to expand till your research rate drops to 50-70%. Once its dropped improve those cities getting your commerce and science rate back up and repeat the process.
I dont think you will have time to expand till 1AD in most games. You will likely end up with a few nieghbors and should aim for 5-7 cities before war. That tends to be the norm with my games and alot of others from what ive read.

Its tricky at first but with a couple games under your belt it all starts comin together.
Good luck. Have fun!

No need for machinery if you don't need macemen. Get to civil service and then get to astronomy for isolated starts.

Corn gives +1 health, another +1 with granary, so that's, well, a ton of food.

That cottage city 1 NE suggestion, I disagree with. The only benefit would be working the iron. However, I might consider 1 NW and then have another city SE somewhere to work the pigs.

Maybe somebody could dotmap it for you

ok, i restarted the game, its the same map, i just reloaded from 4000BC

I think its alot better, citys are closer, on rivers, i got all the resources. Tech-wise, i want to civil service, then went back to pick up monarchy because happiness was becoming a big problem, so I'll spam some soldiers now, select optics and pick up the pre-reqs, and keep heading east! thanks guys!

The biggest thing i see worth mentioning is that Pisae probably wouldve done better to be settled west of neapolis grabbing what looks to be atleast copper instead of tundra and overlap. Other than that id say you made a nice improvment over your last game.:goodjob:

UPDATE:

you can can ive got my continent pretty settled, one more city south east that you cant see, but i didnt want to make this any more 56K unfriendly. I've got a slim lead against the other civs. im getting to steel to make iron clads, my goal is to stay 1 step ahead- navy wise, so i can concentrate on building science and win space race! or ill build nukes and destroy the entire planet, whatever.PICS!

Looks like you're off to a good start. You're teching really quick, and not loosing much money at 70% research. If you maintain a sizeable modern army and don't get too off with your diplomacy, then you shouldn't have too much hassle. Looks like you got the cities where you wanted them this time.

im making enemys like its going outta style in this game. No civ is above "cautious" with because i refuse to give out tech, and they have absolutely no tech that i dont have. i'm 5 turns aways from being able to build 12
:strength: ironclads and ive just stated to see the fisrt ememy caravel. Im thinking about just destroying every ship i see cause their making me mad.

update:

well, i won the game, first ever on Prince, and it was only my second time at that diff level . I played at chieftain before this, and wanted a challange so jumped a few levels.
Pretty much went how i wanted. With huge tech lead I built a powerful navy to keep my foes at bay. Despite the fact i was a huge jerk to all the other civs, (refused to ever trade or help with wars), no one attacked me untill the 1900's. And that ended shortly when Catherine offered peace/150 gold. I did lose the top score to said Catherine, but space race was easily achieved. Not a huge accomplishment, as you all can see the land i had. But it was a Prince win. So there ya go. Thanks for your help.
