Ok, after a deep thought, I have decided to post a poll to decide what official "Historical" name to give to this unit called currently Fusilier.
Many Civ players have been telling me to call this unit otherwise and since I will be sending my units to FIRAXIS, I want to make sure everthing is Historicaly accurate.
So far:
Waffen SS is ok
Flammenwerfer ok
Grenadier ok (I think)
Reiter ok (I think)
Fallschirmjager (upcoming ...ok)
Fusilier ??? Either Wehrmacht or Schutze

Now this unit was created to replace the Rifleman for the Germans, but since there are many WWII mods in construction, I guess it's more appropiate to name it for that era. :soldier:

So, it's up to all of you Civ III players to choose :

Fusilier
Schutze
Wehrmacht

I am posting a poll that will expire on Saturday Aug 3

After that I will rename this unit (if there will be changes) :)

nonnob3, Since your Fusilier unit is ment as a German specific replacement for the stock rifleman, trying it "make it fit" in with your Third Reich units seems a little strange given its histrorical context. If I'm not mistaken, the rifleman unit fits in the time period from the mid 18th century to the late 19th century. That being the case, I would suggest you name this unit Landwehr or Landwehr Rifleman. Schutze and Wehrmacht just don't seem appropriate.

Sorry - but that's not true!

"Schütze" is just the German word for "Rifleman". You can call a guy with a riffle in his hand from 1800 Schütze as well...

But what is true is the fact that is is used only to the infantry after about 1850...

but that's not the point anyway!
nonnob3 asks about an appropriate name for this as a WWII unit!

my suggestions:

Fusilier:
Not so good because its more a french name... Wouldn't be used as "spoken" name...

Wehrmacht:
Was my favourite because it reflects the name of the whole Army... But in the meantime i think it would be more appropriate to call him Schütze (I did so in my MOD as you can see) because its' only the rifleman of the whole Wehrmacht wich includes the tanks and artillery as well...

The point is: If you call the rifleman of the Waffen SS "Waffen SS" (there had been tanks and Artilelry in the Waffen SS too), then it's OK to call the Fusilier "Wehrmacht". (kind of abstraction)

Schuetze
As I explained before my favourite at the moment. (51:49 against Wehrmacht i think :D)

BTW: You shouldn't call it "Schutze" - wirte "Schuetze" instead.
("ü" can be written as "ue" - is a good idea because "ü" in the folders could be a problem.. Germany uses other ANSII codes there I fear.. In Windows it should work - but its better to prevent it)

Ok:
If you use "overview names" like "Waffen SS" then "Wehrmacht" would fit.
If you call it "Schuetze" nothing can be wrong.

I have to say that I like Schütze also. :) It just sounds right. Knowing what Wehrmacht means, it's kind of odd looking at a unit called 'Wehrmacht'. It would be like having a unit called 'army'. ;) Fusilier I just don't like the sound of, so Schütze takes the cake. :)

@ pi8ch,

You missed my point completely. This is not an appropriate unit for use as a WWII unit. Just because someone wants to assign a WWII era name to a pikeman dosen't somehow make it "magically" alright to use it completly out of context.

I am aware of what Schutze means, thank you. It just seems so generic as to hardly be an improvment over simply leaving it alone at Fusilier.

@ Polaris

just wanted to say that the question of the name stands in context of ww2.

in the poll it's possible to say "Wehrmacht", and Wehrmacht was only used after WW1 and during WW2...

So that's the timeframe for which the poll goes....

Well, I see that Scutze is catching up to Wehrmacht :)
Polaris, yes indeed I have created this unit to replace the 1800-1900 era Rifleman for Germany.
This name change is for the WWII mods for many players and FIRAXIS (of course it can be called whatever anybody wants when placed in thier own mod, I just want to send them this unit with an official name for WWII) , Fusilier is appropriate if used for general game, unless there is a "true" German rifleman name of the 1800 era.
What it comes down to: it's between WEHRMACHT or SCHUTZE
Now, pi8ch is kind a right about that "Wehrmacht" is an army name, although many WWII history sites call the unit the same name. Lots of controversy, I remember when I created the Waffen SS (originally I called it Storntooper :jump: ), there were a lot of requests to change it to Wehrmacht.
That's the reason of this poll :)
I cannot make up my mind without your help.
But, on this forum, and for the general reason for this unit created, the name will stay as Fusilier, again unless someone finds a better name for that era.
I found this name at www.feldgrau.com, where it does describe in the ranking slot as "Rifleman", but this site is for WWII...
Every historical WWII site my not have all info the same.

Thank you all for your "input" :yeah: .
Poll remains till saturday this week :)

pi8ch,

Regardless of how inane it may be to include this unit as a WWII era unit, as a basic German infantryman of the period, I conceed that your reasoning for selecting the name Schutze is correct and is the best choice of those offered.

I just don't remember the sitution being so desperate in the Third Reich that they took to issuing percussion rifles to the Volksturm units.

Can't say that because I don't know very much about weapons in special.

My main-interest is the history....

Okay, I know these aren't official choices, but what about naming it Gemeiner or Landser? Aren' t both correct names for WWII era German privates in the Wehrmacht? Also, isn't Schutze the basic rank in the Waffen SS? If so, it would seem to make more sense to give this little guy a name more in keeping with the Wehrmacht since nonob3 already has a Waffen SS unit. What do you think, nonnob3, pi8ch ?

@ Gemeiner...

if you mean "private" - that would be ok, but then "Wehrmann" would be better... (Wehrmann was the lowest rank sometimes, like Schütze, but I like Schütze more because it makes you think about a guy with an riffle...)

It's a kind of circle...

I would suggest "Schütze" .. this covers everything around in a way...

@ Polaris
I myself voted "Wehrmacht", but sounds logical, yes.
But look at my thread where I am asking help to create pedia icon images: they are "Wehrmacht" images ...nothing with Schutze.
This is gona be an interesting poll :)
I will decide Saturday after the poll, great ideas....... :goodjob:

I voted for Wehrmacht, cos Fusilier woud be an excellent name to give to 18th century musket infantry, and we can't have you nicking all the best names can we! :p

BTW, all the best in your "Axis versus Firaxis" campaign. :goodjob:

You are so funny. :D
AXIS vs FIR -AXIS-

Thanks buddy :)
Have a great day!

The poll came to a tie and I have decided to call it : Wehrmacht
It is the most common WW II name, I believe it fits perfect for WWII mods. It's kind a goes with the "Waffen SS"...
Thank you for voting! :yeah:
