It's a combination of several factors. The two biggest that have been identified so far are difficulty level and happiness of the population. The harder the difficulty level, the longer anarchy lasts plus the maximum length of anarchy also goes up. Happiness of the populous reduces the length of anarchy. As you can't spend money on happiness during anarchy, the way to do this is to hire entertainers.

Hi guy's I got some questions, but nobody reacted on it so I will ask them again:

1. I made my onw map with som starting lokations of some civs in it. Now the problem is I can't give a starting lokatie to a civ. It's blanked out!. What I normaly do is...... I have one .bic file where I change/add and change for new games. So I opend my default BIC file (u only see water in the map). Then I did ===> file ==> save ass===> name: "testmap" ===> closed the program.
Opende de editor agian opend testmap.bic and started to make my onw map. After I finisch my map I added the Civ's starting lokations. And there is my problem. I cant give a starting lokation to a specific civ. Help!!!

2. In an other game I had a leader but could not make the Militairy tradition to make more army's???

Try this to give a civ a starting location

1) open civ 3 edit (do not use civ3mod that will change the values in all of the games) then open "testmap.bic"

2) Click on "custom rules" that will let you change the rules and values for your senario.

3)Go to "set active player"

4) Click on third option (default value is Rome)

5) use scroll menu to select the civ you want to set a location for

6) Go to the toolbar select the "select overlay" option

7) should get a scroll menu, select "starting location"

8) place location, should state in green text w/ blue circle "_______'s starting location" .

9) don't forget to save:king:

On second point:

A leader can make an army w/o military tradition (building heroic epic & military academy will let you build armies Without a Leader but with a leader you only need to get him into a city, then select "build an army"

@Eliminator - Right click on the starting position to edit it. You can either choose a particular civ to start there or designate it as a player start position.

You must have a successful army and the Military Tradition technology in order to create the Military Academy.

Shiatan:

Thanx for the tip on the starting location, sure is a time saver. Also, I can only build the Academy in the city with the heroic epic. Have you built the academy w/o the HE?

Uhhm did that before....doesn't work because it is blanked out.

Eliminator:

Shaitans way is much better:

Simply use an existing starting positon or create a general starting location and right click on the starting location you should have an option there to set the locaton as a specific civ.

They are like any small wonder - you can build them in any city as long as you meet the prerequisites. They are not linked together. Maybe you rushed an improvement in the city where you want to build it, so it's grayed out, or maybe you have it building in a different city already? Remember to build your Military Academy in your highest production city - armies are very expensive to build, and it will take too long unless you produce close to 100 shields per turn.

My game screws up when I edit something in the editor (It freezes between 200 A.D and 300 B.C, it doesnt crash or go blank it just stops readin the CD), so exactly what can I edit without screwin up the game? And how do I fix up the game?

Republic Outlaw: as long as you only fix numbers things should stay stable. If you change names, grafix or so, make sure you change everything you need to change (i.e. if you change a unit name you also need a grafix file for the new name).

Can you post a edited bic that crashes?

I've played through a dozen or so games now, and just a couple hours ago encountered something I haven't seen before. Being by no means an expert, I'm assuming it's something stupid I'm overlooking so I figured I'd put it here.

In two of my cities, my garrisoned infantrymen began shooting my workers any time they I routed them to go through the cities. (Everything's railroaded so the go-tos often run through the cities.) I select a worker to go somewhere, the path runs through the city, so the worker slides alnog the rails, then stops when he gets in front of the city . . . next thing I know, my own garrison is gunning him down; worker dies, infantry gets promoted to elite. I didn't even know you could shoot at workers :0)

I had just fininshed ralilroading so I had quite a few spare workers anyway so I tried it a few more times. It only happened in two cities, none of the rest.

Is this some sort of spy thing maybe? I haven't really messed with that too much yet so I wouldn't know. Or is this just some weird glitch?

I wish I know how to get those screenshots people put up here. . . it was quite amusing watching a worker get shot up by one of his own :0)

Do you have the Mac version of Civ3?

Hi all, a coupla quick questions. I read through about five pages of this thread before asking, but unfortunately I don't have all day...

1. Is there a unit prior to the tank that's effective against infantry? I noticed in my first game that the infantry period kinda lagged, since there was no effective unit to attack it with. The marines were so-so, I guess, when they finally showed up, but not enough to prevent long, drawn out, WWI-type battles of attrition. Did I just miss something or is the infantry period generally like this for everybody?

2. Is there a hotkey that can display a city's radius on the map screen? How about a potential city? It would make it much easier to pack cities together efficiently if I could see the boundaries onscreen. (I know you can see the cultural boundary around a settler before he moves, but that's only marginally useful and doesn't help with planning.)

3. Is there a Civilization IV in the works?

Thanks mucho.

@confederate_spy:

1. No, there isn't an offensive unit that can take out infantry one on one until tanks. The best method is to use massed artillery strikes to soften up the target before engaging in unit combat.

2. Unfortunately not. The city planning border shown when you have a settler active is the only real planning tool. You can turn on the map grid and that may help you. Click on the "G" on the left side of the mini-map.

3. I'm sure there will be but have not heard anything official at this point. It's unlikely that Firaxis will start putting out CivIV teasers until Play the World is well into its sale cycle.

I think thats my problem because I edited the bonus numbers my citizens get and I think it worked fine but when I edited the wonder thing it started crashing....O well time to expiriment:)

Thanks man:goodjob: Id never thought of that.

The manual says that you need to be at war to blockade an opponent, but I have heard of strategies involving blockading while in peacetime. Do you or do you not need to be at war to blockade?
