Volstag: trial and error..... you will find your way, some people like to trade a lot and keep the Ai happy, thus friendly (small army), others like culture war (place cities close to the enemy, then rush lots of culture), others like early conquest (taking the tech from the loser for peace), and so on... keep trying, and read up on Succession games. There is no perfect way you can copy, you have to find your own!

So basically, how does one manage to expand fast enough, maintain a large standing army, work on infrastructure and stay abreast of the tech race all at the same time? It just seems like there isn't enough money/time to do it all.

I think the answer might be to NOT work on infrastructure in the beginning. During the Ancient ages you should concentrate ONLY on settlers, workers and units (and key Wonders). Maybe build a barracks, granary or a temple in one or two cities, but that should be it. I think many beginners think they must build all improvements just because they can, but that is a tactic that will make you fall behind and lose all your money to upkeep.

Hurricane: good one!

The rule is: start a setler production so that it is completed the turn the city goes to size 3. Do not loose turns if anyhow possible!

Is it possible to improve the chances of having one or more strategic resource tiles located in your territory by changing the terrain in the turns prior to getting the tech that reveals the resource on the map (eg. planting lots of forest before getting Replaceable Parts, which reveals rubber) ?

Or is it pre-ordained at game start where the strategic resources are ?
(In this case, what would happen if you cleared a tile of forest that was supposed to have rubber later on ?)

Dran: no. resources are set at the start of the game, so changes won't do anthing... otherwise cutting jungle would meansd no coal there, too....

So, just to double check, if I had cleared a forest tile that had been 'allocated' rubber at game start, and it was just tundra when I got Rep. Parts then the rubber would appear on that tundra tile ?

yes you would get rubber there... I do not think the resource in question can re-appear in that spot if it exhausts, but the first time it should appear there. no prob with the res that do not run out like rubber

Just trying to catch up on latest developments since I've been away for 3 months now...

Noticed that there are leaderheads for Spanish and Mongol civs (at least) and that latest patch allows for 32 civs in play at once. Have some new civs been fully developed and included in this patch, or is Firaxis just providing support for modding and getting us ready for the XP?

Thanks in advance!

Park Ranger! You are back!!!!!!!!!!

Just for XP, but there is talk they will supposedly have weekly add-ons with a new civ each....

Park Ranger! You are back!!!!!!!!!!

Temporarily only :( Missing the game badly since I still don't have access to my own PC and return to hinterlands next week, working on a crew to plant another 500,000 seedlings or so. Wish reforestation in RL was as easy as in civ3! (But then, I might be out of a job, 'cause then any jo blo could do it).

So I'm back on CFC but can only enjoy CIV3 vicariously through all of you folks.

In any case hope you are right and we get a new civ every week. Then when I finally do have hours and hours to kill it will be like a whole new game...

I have a 1337 5u><0r5 n00b question. Or two.

1. When you start building improvements to help with pollution, will it decrease the yellow triangle pollution markers in the View City screen? Or will it only keep the city from making more?

2. Why can I not build a tactical nuke? I have uranium and aluminum, and have discovered all the necessary techs. But I am not getting an option to make a tactical nuke. Why? I wanna blow something up...... ;)

3. Can you load cruise missles on nuclear subs? What about regular subs? If so, how many?

1: yes it will decrease them 8unless the number it cuts down is replaced by new ones because of city growth in the same turn)

2: do you have space flight also???

3: don't know, reg subs no way, nuce subs should load 1 at least, but since I only play my mod I am not sure. Check in the editor (open civ3mod.bic, then go to the units tab, then choose nucelar sub)

do naval and air units count towards defending against cultural flip?

Can you only load 1 tact. nuke on a nuke sub?

other than pikemen (and spearmen?) what other units have bonus against mounted units? how big is the bonus? is the bonus only for defending against mounted units?

the bonus against mounted units was not carried over from Civ. THER IS NO BONUS AGAINST MOUNTED UNITS WHATSOEVER!!!!!!!!

******: I think to bulid a tac nuke somebody (anybody) must have completed the manhattan project.

Well, nobody has built the Manhattan project. I was almost completed it, but I stopped when I realized it would give the other civs nuke capabilities as well.
