Thx. I thought for a minute I had missed something important about one of the other units!

Ok, I'm not a noobie but here is a (possibly) daft question:

On the domestic adviser screen, cities in red are rioting, but what is the difference between those shown in italics and those that are not?

From the PTW Readme.txt, no grammar corrections made ;)
* Domestic advisor screen displays the names of cities in italics if that city's citizens are managed by the governor and to display it's production in italics if the city's production is managed by the governor.

I started a huge map, and I forgot what victory conditions I turned on :p

Anyway to find out which ones were enabled?

Thanks

Try restarting another game. The conditions carry over to the next game. Or you might try Gramphos' utility, that's supposed to tell you.

That's a good idea, but I do mp and hotseat a lot, and I started this game a week ago...meaning the victory conditions wouldnt be their ;)

What is this Gramphos' utility you speak of?

It's called the MultiTool, and allows you to do a bunch of stuff to the save file. You can change victory conditions with it, so I would assume you would be able to see the current conditions.

It should be noted that I don't use this myself, so it's all just hearsay.

Here's the link for it

On many of the screenshots I've seen on this site, there are little green "spots" on some of the grasslands. Are they just part of some graphics modpack or is there something I'm missing?

BTW, I love this site! I was routinely getting demolished on anything over Chieftain level, and after only a week of reading the forums, I've started pulling myself out of the gutter. :goodjob:

Thanks,
-Shadow

One of the preferences is to show terrain detail.

There's lots of good info shown on the terrain, most of which will be important at one time or another.

Other than the basic terrain types, food/shields/commerce can be modified - rivers/resources/lux will add commerce, wheat/cows/game food, etc.

Also, attacks across rivers suffer a defensive bonus.

Sometime the map can be hard to read - use Shift-N to reveal the map. There are also some graphic mods to make things easier to see.

IIRC Shift-N brings up the map 'clean' options. Use Shift-M to actually see the map ('clean' map)

My 14 month old son who demands to play Civ will occasionally (or at least scroll the screen and pound on the keys with his sippy-cup) issue a "go to" command apparently without using the g key. Is there a way to do this using only the mouse? How?

Last night I discovered that there is a case that a great leader can fail to build in one turn. I used him to rush my palace to move it. It went to 1 turn to build. I was at war and took out a city. The next turn my palace needed 33 turns to complete! It was most annoying. From this I assume that palace cost is somehow related to the number of cities? Anyone know how this works?

There are a lot of excellent articles on how things work in the game. Has anyone done one on war wearieness? Sometimes I seem to get huge hits on my happiness, and I am not sure why. A defensive war is supposted to be less weariness. What is allowed in "defensive" mode?

Is there a reputation hit if you attack a unit away from any city, and say "Attack the scum" when asked?

Your are right, the cost of the Palace is related to the number of cities you have. If you use the leader to rush the palace, do not take over or create any new cities that turn, or else the cost of the palace increases. not sure of the actual values though.

A very annoying 'feature' is that you can click and drag on a unit, it will issue the 'go to' command to the location of the drag.

I think the biggest causes of WW are:

- RoP rape (Having a Right of Passage with someone and then moving units in to their territory and declaring war)
- MPP rape (Having a Mutual Protection Pact with someone and then attacking them) I don't know this for sure, this is just what I have experienced myself
- Ending the turn with your units in enemy territory
- Taking heavy unit losses
- Declaring war yourself (rather than them declaring on you)
- Being a Democracy (or to a lesser extent, being a Republic)
- Losing cities to the enemy

Note that WW appears to last 20 turns, if you re-declare war in this time (i.e. when you have an existing peace treaty with 'X' turns to go) you will suffer from some of the WW from the last time you were at war.

This list is not exaustive, and not quantative (in that some things are much worse than others, like RoP and MPP rape).

In a recent PBEM game (MP games have much reduced WW), I was a Republic with an RoP and MPP with the Ottomans. I entered their territory and declared war. I had about 100 units in their territory at the end of each turn. Within 4 turns I had lost about 40 or 50 units, and I was suffering 30% WW in a size 12 city. That's pretty bad!

On the other hand a defensive war that you didn't start, where you are not losing cities or lots of units, and where you stay out of their territory will not produce much WW at all, even under a Democracy.

I think that's just the adviors way of telling you to be a warmonger. ;)

The palace cost is a multiple of 100 shields with a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 1000; see this thread for the results of some testing I ran on it. The thing to do is use the wait command on your leader until after you're done everything else and then rush the palace as the last act of your turn.

Can someone tell me what is the maximum amount of cities that can be built in Play the World?
I have been playing on a map size 300x300 and when I went to build another city I got a messsage that said "To many cities" and I could not build another one.

Thanks for your help.

I know the total number of cities (Human & AI) cannot exceed 512. That is the total including cities that you build and take over from the AI's.

What I need to know is what is the maximum that you can build on your own? Without taking over any other AI cities.

Thanks
Bratboy
