[news] BOTM 19 - Pre-Game Discussion

Would have been an interesting game. (But this is one of the months when all those with the Steam version of the game are treated as if they did worse than lose.) :(

(for those who don't get the point, Steam users don't get much of a choice about updating)

I posted this on the 3.19 thread...

If you're a Steam user like me then the update will be applied automatically. This seems to happen even if you select "do not keep up-to-date" in the game properties menu.

The only answer I have found is to launch Steam, go to the My Games list, wait until the update has started downloading then right click on the BTS entry and select "pause update". The download won't resume until you tell it to, even after Steam or system restarts.

Moderator Action: DELETED

Please! Once you have started the game, do NOT post outside the spoiler threads until the game is over.

Even that is too much detail. Do not post in this thread at all after you've started playing the game.

Not if you have started playing the real game. Your report could be tainted by your experiences in the actual game.

Oh sorry, I feel like an idiot now :(.

Aussie.

I have been thinking about this game at work and I bet we are all alone in a continenet in this game. The starting point and level would otherwise make the game too boring for most players. If I get to play this game I will head to education (from oracel?)as soon as possible (now there is something new for a space game :p ) and then try for Astro from Lib if astro takes more than 7 turns. I have noted that in a good science game it is useless to delay Libaralism for a costlier tech that will only take 5-7 turns to laern, so earlier observations are better. Good luck to all and may I have some extra time this month (:please:).

Haven't yet downloaded the real game, but tried the test game posted on this thread earlier. Played the first 100 turns three times by settling in place, 1S, and 1SE.

Have to say that the first 100 turns don't tell much about the optimal placement - each time the city ends up using the same 5 resource squares regardless of placement. I did arrive to some other conclusions though:

1. The optimal build queue - Worker, WB, WB, Library (as soon as possible). Have to start with worker because there are just so many squares that can be improved right away. As soon as library is ready go for great scientist and Academy.

2. This city is NOT for whipping - there are five (at least) priceless resources + you need 2 science specialists for generating GSci

3. Go straight for Civil service (with Oracle or without). I got to it by turn 82 without (it can probably be done even faster). Library + Academy + Bureaucracy + 2 Sci specialists = a whole lotta beakers. I managed to get 152 in Timbuktu alone by turn 100.

Of course all this is done with very little hostile intervention and with help of additional resources (elephants, marble,...)

We'v got second Monarch BOTM in a row. What's happend?

Last month would've been Prince but Niklas particularly wanted that game to be at monarch - I think he felt that was a suitable level for the challenge he wanted to set.

That's not quite true. The reasons for last game being Monarch were because we were trying out something different, which would have continued this month if DS hadn't been too busy to even design a game at all. ;)

Oh No! I went to play this game yesterday and realized I can't find my BTS disk! Is there anyway to play without it? Do I have any other option other than buying another copy? :(

They say patch 3.19 let's you play without a disk.
Now, this game is not 3.19, so if you really want to play this one...

Ah sorry Niklas. Trying to be helpful but I'd obviously been too much out of the loop the last few weeks :)

Jasonc, I have a legit Civ4 DVD and a legit Civ4 Complete DVD.

I sure aint going to put up with some noisy wrist vibrating spinning disk contraption being 'required' to run my electron drift + photon emmittion based electronic entertainment.

So I use a mod, which means I dont need the disk. What a good idea.

I dont see SonyCorpsNZ at my door, and if I did, I have 2 licsences to wave in their faces.

Its only when you dont support the things you love that hearts get broken.

(Actually hearts still get broken even then)

Im getting the error...

The save file you have selected is protected to insure the assets of the mod folder have not been changed.

I am running CIV BtS patch 3.17

and HOF mod 3.17

I have done nothing to change any parts of the program, I dont mod myself and dont at all tinker with any parts of the game...

Any idea why I am getting this msg?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

a question unrelated to the GOM. I would like to play this start at another gamespeed, epic, is it possible to somehow save this map and starting position?

Once the game is over and the results are published, we also publish the worldbuilder save that the game was built from. You can take that save and run it at any speed and difficulty level you want. :)
