GOTM 21: Hatshepsut

This game MUST be played in patch version 1.74 - a change from last month! We will NOT accept any games played under any other patch versions, and you can't play it in warlords!

Further, it MUST be played using HOF mod version 1.74.001.
Mac players can download their version of the 1.61.011 mod from this thread.

Game settings:
Civilization: Egypt (Leader: Hatshepsut; Traits: Creative, Spiritual)
Rivals: 8
Difficulty: monarch
Map: lakes
Mapsize: Small
Climate: Rocky
Water level: medium
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: Raging barbs, aggressive AI.
Victory Conditions: all enabled

Adventurer Class bonuses:
 1. Start with archer (on plot with settler)
 2. Start with worker (on plot with warrior)
 3. Start with extra tech - pottery.

Challenger Class Equalisers:
 1. Start without warrior
 2. Start without knowledge of agriculture.

>>Go get the starting saves!

Have a problem with HOF. :(

I have not moved my warrior or Settler, so I am still pre-play in the game and I have had to reload several times. I go into HOF to change the options in the HOF1, 2, 3 and then try and exit. However - the buttons at the bottom do not respond. I believe the two buttons are "Restore Default" and "Exit". I cannot exit and have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to get out of the program. All other buttons appear to function.

Thanks for looking into problem...

It works for me.....

Your preferences are stored in the registry (I think...) Are you playing on an account with write-access to the registry?

You are quite bright... I would never have thought of that!

I'm using Vista and the HOF 1.74 file installed only had the three 'standard' rights associated with it, not the two additional boxes marked for writing and modifying, etc...

This is a real pain having to enable that type of issue with a modification as simple as changing 'preferences' in a game mod. Whew - who knew there would be this kind of problem with Vista! :crazyeye: I had never had this issue before on any HOF mod or other mod's, I just curious why this one?

Not sure.

So have you fixed it? If so, can you outline what you did so that other people having problems can fix it too?

Sorry - Yes, it's an easy fix after you've worked with Vista for a while. I went into the Mod directory, (...Program Files/Fireaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Mods) clicked on the HOF 1.74 mod, and right click on "Properties", then click on "Security", then find your "User" login name of the several choices shown and then click on "Edit" to Change Permissions. Give yourself the "Full Control", "Modify" and "Write" options, and click "Apply". Restart the program and it will work fine!

Again - who would of thought buttons not working would have to do with permissions - it makes sense NOW, but good thinking then. :goodjob:

Because it doesn't have access to the HOF ini file the python code throws an error and never finishes drawing the screen. I am glad you worked it out. :goodjob:

Glad you had the problem, JungleIII. Your leap of reasoning from ainwood's question to your solution would have been Grand Canyon for me... :goodjob:

Actually, Bede had solved this one in the HOF forum, see this post which references my problem, his solution, and my modification of his solution:

I also had posted it in the SGOTM 05 maintenance thread

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5737446&postcount=66

and Bede put his solution there as well.

Maybe we need a GOTM sticky thread called "Vista problems and solutions" to put this one (and others?) where everyone can find it easily?

@LC: not keeping up with the maintenance thread? ;) :mischief:

Is it bad to download adventurer then play and if too easy to download contender? First GOTM for me and just wondering if that is acceptable or not.

Totally and completely bad. As in you wouldn't be allowed to submit - it'd be utterly against the rules about not replaying moves. You need to decide upfront what game you want to play, and then download that and play it, no matter how it turns out. If you think that adventurer may be too easy, that strongly suggests you should play contender, though I don't know what your skill level is.

The rationale is that while playing the adventurer save you'd be finding out information about the map, the rivals, etc., all of which could be useful to you when replaying the contender save, meaning you'd have an unfair advantage over people who played the contender save straight off.

You can only submit the first attempt, regardless of level, because on your second attempt you have the advantage of knowing the map.

So I'd suggest you finish and submit the adventurer game assuming that you have started it, and after that if you want to play it at contender, fine ... just don't expect to submit the contender.

Ok, thanks. Too bad I already started contender then...should have known it would be too easy.

Does that mean you are partway into both the Adventurer and Contender saves? Could be that you can't submit either in that case, but you might stop where you are, send a private message to ainwood and see what he says.

If you were far into adventurer, and are only a small ways into contender, the adventurer game should not be spoiled, and MAYBE you'd get to submit it ... but I would not bet too much money on that.

BTW, w/ GOTM20 I had an issue with the protected save. The problem is this that if you are playing on a non administrator account in windows (XP is what I use) then the save game protection does not check the right folder. You have to run the program as administrator. I still have a problem with the save unless I run it as admin, which I doubt most people who use non admin accounts can do. Is it possible this can be remedied?

No, never d/led contender...just playing adventurer, but it is really easy...too easy I think. But, I will play/submit adventurer this time and then do contender in future GOTMs. Typoed first post was supposed to be adventurer.

an easier way to tell, is if you've ever won a game on that difficulty level, monarch this month, then you most likely don't need the adventurer save.
